Building global connections requires an understanding of various cultures. It requires that Americans ‘reach out’ to learn more about different languages, music, beliefs, rituals, pastimes, food, history and more. These assignments will help you as students in America learn more about other people around the world. Step #1: Finish any of the previous assignments that have not been completed yet, such as 1) Forum #1: Words and Meanings, Forum #2: Diversity in America and the field trip assignment concerning connections between different cultures and art. Step #2:Choosing a nation, school and partner can be easily done by going to www.epals.com and logging in with your username and password.Once there, you may post messages in the forum, write to your partner in the Czech Republic, and click on ‘Find a Classroom’ to search for a school with which to connect. Step #3: You can learn more about the country you chose from the following locations: www.wikipedia.org (articles about the culture of each country – just type your country’s name and ‘culture’) and http://www.travelblog.org/, (blogs from travelers to various countries - just choose your region and then navigate to your country). Write down ten aspects of culture from the country you selected and post it to the forum. [50 points] Step #4: Examine your own culture, using our notes so far and knowledge of your own cultural heritage.Identify ten aspects of your own culture.Consider your own cultural identity, how it is manifested and viewed, what it means to you, etc.Post your findings on the forum here in this thread. [40 points] Step #5: Respond to another student’s post concerning your thoughts on 1) the nation and culture they are choosing or 2) their examples of individual culture. [10 points]
‘Extra Time’ Assignment #1: Check out the websites http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/divided/ and consider whether anyone become racially prejudiced. This is the question a third grade teacher asked the day after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968. Now you are wondering the same thing while sitting in your high school Multicultural Studies course. You ask yourself questions about the nature of racism and who it affects. Imagine yourself as you are. Take action on your thoughts by watching the video. Now, imagine yourself leading a Professional Development Day for teachers at your school. How can students, like yourself, help the teachers in your school decrease discrimination and prejudice?Assignment: Watch the video presentation and come up with ten recommendations for both teachers, students and administrators from your school to 1) raise awareness about discrimination, 2) decrease racial prejudice. Explain each in detail. ‘Extra Time’ Assignment #2: Check out the website http://www.1000journals.com/index.php?view=Home and imagine that while walking in the hallway at school, someone just handed you a book. The hallway is crowded and you don’t notice who slipped this into the books you were carrying before they are gone. It looks like a journal, but you’re not sure. Getting to class, you sit down at your desk and open it, noticing that the teacher is taking attendance. The journal looks like it’s been made by dozens, maybe hundreds of people. There’s a note in the beginning explaining that this journal is meant to be read, added to, and then given to a stranger. Its goal is to make its way about the world and then go back to its owner, whose address is written on the inside cover. It has some amazing entries, captivates you with its words and images, and then you pick up the pen… Assignment: Choose 10 pages from the scanned entries on the webpage from random journals and describe the author’s message (and your impression of their cultural background) in your own words.

When my mom came to the United States from Puerto Rico she promised herself that she would remain true to her culture and not forget about her culture.Me, my sister, and my little brother were all born in the United States.I’ve only been to Puerto Rico once but consider myself very much Puerto Rican. To many people that may not make sense but that is still part of who I am.My mom brought me up talking Spanish, listening to Spanish music, eating Spanish food and just living the life of any Puerto Rican-American person.I always remain true to who I am and am proud to say that I have more to me than just being an American.I can’t really explain how I remain true to my culture but I do it by just not forgetting that even though I wasn’t born there it’s in my blood and I can never escape who I really am.My dad wasn’t born in Puerto Rico either but was also brought up knowing that he was more than just an American. Both my parents made sure that we were given the best of both worlds.I’m very proud and lucky to be a Puerto Rican-American and wouldn’t change that about me for nothing in the world. I also have been brought up going to church and with a strong belief in God.That is another big part of our culture.I wasn’t able to explain 10 aspects of my culture but I hope you guys can kinda get what I’m trying to say about my culture as a Puerto Rican.

1.98.2% of the Rwandan population practices a monotheistic religion, 93.6% Christian, 4.6% Islam. The staggering figures could be attributed to the involvement of Christian clergy and Muslim groups in the aid and relief to the tattered, post-genocide country. The assistance caused widespread conversion, especially to Islam. 2. The primary exports of the land-locked, rural country are coffee and tea. To go along with Rwanda’s few natural resources and minimal industry, the economic stability of the country has been rocky ever since the genocide in 1994 demoralized the economy. Despite this, Rwanda has made significant progress in rehabilitating its economy and regaining private and external investment. 3.The most popular of a long tradition of folk music in Rwanda is the ikinimba. The ikinimba is a dance, which through complex steps and moves tells the stories of Rwandan kings and heroes. The dance is usually accompanied by various string instruments, such as the ingoma and the inanga. 4. Rwandan literature encompasses both oral storytelling and traditional text. Two sub-categories fall under traditional texts, royal documents and non-formal, non-politically influenced literature. Good storytellers are revered in Rwandan society for the reason that the oral tradition if Rwanda is such an integral aspect of their culture. 5. In 1994 an act of “ethnic cleansing,” later to be coined the Rwandan Genocide, resulted in the death of nearly one million (800,000-1,071,000) Tutsi and moderate Hutu natives. The incredible lack attention and response to the extermination embarrassed first-world countries and the UN alike. When France, Belgium, and the U.S. declined to intervene, Canada continued to lead the peacekeeping force in Rwanda. It remains a tainted subject in realm of history. 6. Rwanda is the 27th most densely populated country in the world, the number one in continental Africa. 7.Rwanda’s national, Independence Day is celebrated annually on July 1st. Genocide day is celebrated on Christmas Day. 8.The Rwandan demographic is composed primarily of the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa peoples. 84% of the ethnic groups are Hutu, 15% Tutsi, and 1% Twa. 9.70.4% of the Rwandan population is said to be literate. 76.3% of males and 64.7% of woman are known to be able to read and write. 10.Most Rwandans speak Kinyarwanda, a tonal language of Bantu origin. Although numbering 7 million speakers, the national languages of Rwanda are English and French, not Kinyarwanda.
