Forum #4: Diversity Discussion
Permalink

Background: Today, we’re going to have an online discussion of some important issues and perspectives concerning cultural unity and diversity.  Contribute freely and often but remember that everyone sees what everyone writes, so respect is key.  It's perfectly ok to disagree with someone in a respectful way and it is a specific necessity in this class.  If you want to cite evidence to back up your position (which is encouraged) you should paste the URL of your source to your post.

Questions
: There are many questions that can be asked about multiculturalism and diversity in today’s world.  1) Should American society be considered a ‘melting pot’?  How should Americans define their cultural identity?  2) Can our society be both culturally united and diverse?  Can other societies?  Can our high school?  How?  3) What are the most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today?  Can they be effectively addressed or overcome?  4) What examples of cultural diversity exist in American society (and
New Bedford High School) today?  How are they demonstrated (or not) in music, movies, books, advertising, families, workplaces or the government?

Evaluation: This assignment is worth 100 points and will count towards your Journal grade.  Answer three of the four questions above.  Brief answers are  discouraged.  Think deeply about the questions and your answers.  You will receive
20 points for each answer (60 total), 20 points for a question or comment to another student’s post and 20 points for responding to another student's post.  I will give extra credit to students who continue the discussion and answer the responses.  The goal is to build a dialogue on serious, complicated issues that we live with each day.  Let's have fun and speak our truth with respect!

1. a. American society should be considered a “melting pot” because it is a place where people of different ethnic groups are brought together to get to know one another.b. Americans should define their cultural identity as American if they were born in the United States. However, they usually define themselves by where their ancestors came from or by their nationality. For example I’m German and Italian so if I determined by cultural identity as my nationality I would say that I was German and Italian instead of American, which is what I truly am.2. Our society as well as other societies can be both culturally united and diverse because it is today. Although, there are differences among people, for the most part it is. Our high school is culturally united and diverse in my opinion because we learn something new about culture everyday whether we realize it or not.3. The most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today are the condition of being one as a whole in a harmonious mutual understanding.

1. I think it is true that America should be considered a melting pot. Even though there are some differences among the people that are living in the U.S for the most part, there are many different ethnic groups and cultures meaning that we are all mixed together whether we accept it or not.  In my school, for example, there are definitely many different cultures and colors of people meaning that we are all mixed together in this one place.  It’s up to us to make the best of it.  If someone is born into the United States it is true that they are automatically Americans. But one thing that I believe is that it is up to that person to choose what they want to be considered.  I understand that I am an American but I do not forget about my culture and would not ignore it.2. It is possible that our society can be both culturally united and diverse.  Like I mentioned before, it is up to us to push for that in our society.  Anything is possible if enough people push for it to happen. All societies can become culturally united and diverse if they work together for it to happen.  My school, for the most part, is culturally united because a lot of people choose to be friends with people from other cultures putting those differences aside.  There is still a lot to go but together it can happen. 4. Cultural diversity exists all around us.  My school is made up of a lot of different people working towards one goal which is to graduate.  That is an example of cultural diversity because many of the students understand that even though we are different people we are all hoping to achieve the same thing and are willing to work together to achieve it. In the media, though, this part of the cultural diversity is not really paid too much attention to.  The media decides to portray the bad and negative side of society such as the discrimination and mistreatment of people because of their cultures and differences.

America is definitly a melting pot we have so many cultures that influence our culture and there is no spicific way to define present day america other than a mix of several other outside influences.  In New Bedford High there is a vast array of different music and languages that float around in new bedford  and alot of places i now see billboards in other languages and at the dmv the test and everything else is in several languages i think that there are just diverty every time we turn around in this school.  No i dont think a culture can be divers and unified because there is to many differences and veiws between cultures on how things should work for there to be to thick of an intermeshing I dont believe other societies could accomplish this either our school has acomplished this not very well because there are in some classes kids who cant even speak english or they chose not to cooperate with each other becasue of difference in race.

 2) Can our society be both culturally united and diverse?  Can other societies?  Can our high school?  How?

Yes, I believe that America can be both culturally united and diverse.  Many people, when they come to America, continue with the traditions that they have always known but they are still included in our society.  Their own culture and traditions contribute to America’s culture.  Just last night I went out to a Thai food restaurant, which was right next to a Buddhist meditation center, down the street from that were people singing American folk music, and right around the corner was an exhibit of African American art.  All of these cultures are quite different but they are in such a relatively small area and nothing that was going on felt like it was out of place.  I think that people in America can hold on to their culture but still be a part of American society.
Other societies can be culturally united and diverse.  It may not happen as often because in many other countries they have one primary culture, so for another culture to become a part of that may not seem as natural to them, but it’s not impossible.
Our high school is culturally united and diverse because there are students who were born in or have lived in other countries.  So many students in the building know multiple languages and practice different cultural traditions freely.  Our school is very diverse but I think that most of the people in the building can respect the differences.

1) people in american society shouldnt be  considered a melting pot. because everyone is capable of being themselves. being united isnt being acuallly the same.. being united is accepting one another and not judging them for who they are.. getting along and standing for one another.
2)it can be united and diverse at the same time.how? why? because you can into different things and have different oppionons and still be untied as a family and accept each other.
3) the war in irag keeps us united in a way ... we stand for our country. we are protecting each other and our rights,
4)some of the culural diversities in NBHS  could be the fact that different groups of people dont like each other. the Emo kids might not like the preppy kids.. the  jock kids might not like the soccer kids.(portuguese kids) but yet if you get eevry one together for a "prep rally" they all seem to just get along and stand proud for the WHALERS =]

I think America should be considered a “melting pot.” America Is a place with many different types of people.  There is a big mixture of races, backgrounds, ethnicities, etc.  Us Americans should define our culture by having displays or exhibits of American jazz.  Also we should show proudly all the different types of people live all through America, maybe through having cultural celebrations that everyone can attend for certain and all  ethnicities or backgrounds.  I believe our society can be socially united and diverse because no matter what we are all Americans and should be proud of it.  Other societies can also be united and diverse if they do not discriminate or look down on a certain race, religion, or ethnicity in their own society.  In my opinion, my high school is already united and diverse.  There are many people of various backgrounds in this school and no one shows any discrimination to anyone because most people here have friends or family that are from certain and other backgrounds.  The most important issue challenging unity today is probably the fact that since the tragedy of 911, people of middle eastern descent are being discriminated against and there is still a little bit of racism still existing in certain places in America.  I think if we all come together as a whole and end the war in Iraq the issue can be overcome.  Examples of cultural diversity in American societies are the different foods, the different music, etc.  At NBHS there are different groups of people that also listen to certain types of music, speak different languages, eat certain foods and just in general come involved in different things in their community.

1I think the American Society should be considered a melting pot because it is very diverse. It is more diverse in some places then others and it is recognized more in some places within the U.S. then others. I feel as though Americans should identify their culture as American and there heritage what ever their ancestors are. 2. I think we are all culturally united because were are mixed with other races and we all live together and work together as one nation no matter what race. We are also very diverse because there are so many different ancestors that we have come from and no one is really from America besides maybe the Indians. So yes I do think we can be. I think our high school is already in some way. Examples like music and culture. 3. I think issues within cultural Race, past event like slavery and when people say stupid comments about slavery. Also Mexicans jumping over the border and people saying stupid things about that.  Yes I think so but not any time soon. There is cultural diversity shown in NBHS like when they will be like shut up you ain’t black or whatever race and also in music. They are demonstrated like when they say o hip hop is only for black people and rock is only for white people.

American Society in my mind is the biggest melting pot in the world. Tons of different ethnicities and cultures come to America to have freedom and make a better life for themselfes and there families. Americans should define themselfes as american and also by what there ancestors were. Our Society Can be culturally united and diverse because it is something that is happenening as we speak. And our school is diverse and united, we learn all sorts of things from other kids from differnt races or cultures.

American society is clearly the definition of a melting pot.  We are almost every culture rolled into one.  I think that people should be proud of where they come from but if you are born here then you are American.  I think our society can be culturally united yet diverse in the way that people should be proud of where they come from and we need to stand together as Americans as well otherwise the ideals that this country was supposed to be built on will be lost.  It would be a lot harder for other societies to do this because they do not have the diversity that we deal with.  It is almost an obligation to do it to set the example for the world today and tomorrow.  Even if it starts off in a small place such as our high school, but it is possible. We could do it here, even now it is really bad between blacks and whites and Spanish etc. etc. etc.  Not particularly myself because I have family that represents many parts of the world, but a lot of people are really just focused on color and race and culture that it’s nauseating.  For example in the U.S. military now everybody is treated the same,(to an extent of course).  Even in our high school most sports and extracurricular activities are culturally diverse.  I think that in the government is the most challenging cultural unity to deal with at this time only because of the fact that everything that happens with this country somebody somewhere has a political agenda.  I’m not sure that these problems can be properly addressed or fixed.

i think you had good examples and points and personally i think that there are so many different races and cultures that they should all be respected and excepted equally.

I think its possible to be both diverse and united, but its difficult.  I think that certain groups feel safe sticking together, and its hard for these groups to venture out and befriend other groups that they know virtually nothing about. Im not too sure about other societies, but i think that its pretty much the same thing thats going on in our own society. Its much easier for people in high school to mingle and make friends with other people from different cultures; we are younger and more open minded, and are not so afraid to leave a 'safe place' in our own cultural group.

3) What are the most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today?  Can they be effectively addressed or overcome?
One of the most pressing issues is stereo types being created about certain groups of people. This can hurt the chances of groups getting together and mixing because they done like what the other group os all about or what is being said about them. I think this could be overcome if people got to know eachother instead of listening to the stereotypes.

You know what I've noticed after being here over 10 years?  ...We've never gotten together as a whole school ever in one place.

1) American society has ceased to be a melting pot, a place where immigrants and people from different nations came to achieve the American Dream by trying to be “more Irish than the Irish themselves,” or in this case American. As long as there is racism and discrimination in our nation, a melting pot can never be achieved. How can people combine and create a new culture when citizens are still xenophobic, racism is still alive, and the union between members of different races under holy matrimony is continually shunned upon. Many Jewish rabbis are even referring to the assimilation of the Jewish culture (most Jews live in the U.S.) as a “silent holocaust” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Holocaust#Referring_to_assimilation_of_Jews). How are we gradually becoming a truly united nation, united under culture, when fifty-three years after Brown v. Board of Education are schools are still segregated (http://www.mindfully.org/Reform/2005/American-Apartheid-Education1sep05.htm)? Today, many immigrants seem to recreate their mother country here in America rather than helping to break down the walls that separate us. This is not my opinion of a melting pot, and most definitely not the definition.

2)  a. It might sound like an oxymoron, but it is possible for our country to be both culturally united and diverse. Now as much as ever, proof of this can be found in the news and media, thanks to the War, its disapproval, and other world events. A prime example involving the topic is the recent protest in Washington against the War in Iraq. The group of tens of thousands of anti-war protestors convened to urge Congress and our president to pull troops from Iraq and to stop funding the conflict overseas. Besides the cause, the incident showed the world the willingness of thousands of individuals from many diverse backgrounds to unite under a common goal. That is cultural unity and diversity working hand in hand, and our nation being able to succeed in this is a great model for many other societies to follow, and hopefully, one day envelope. b. In our school, many ethnicities coexist everyday and define the definition of the harmony cultural unity and diversity can share. Conflicts do arise, luckily not on the Do the Right Thing level, but what society is without. As we progress, the situation should only advance the understanding of ourselves and the tolerance for one another.

3) History’s most disreputable heirloom is the most important issue challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today. It’s fear. It’s what drives a person to hate, stereotype, and label. It can be overcome, and has lessened to certain extent in the past century. As a society, learning about one another’s heritage and coming to tolerate all people, we can triumph over fear, ignorance, and intolerance, and welcome a new era of greater understanding.

Wouldn’t diversity make it more difficult to unite a nation? During the Vietnam War protests were common due to the diversity of our nation and the many opinions shared by the people. Don’t you think a state with homogeneous population, who share for the most part the same ideals, would face fiercer opposition than a United States in rallying public opinion? Like a fascist or strongly nationalist government for example?

1) Should American society be considered a ‘melting pot’?  How should Americans define their cultural identity?
I think that American society should deffinately be considered a melting pot.  There are so many different cultures in America that there really isn't a way that you can tell if someone is actually American or not.  I bet that there are atleast a thousand people that originated from each country in the world today.  I think that Americans should consider themselves American but also should hold on to their heritage because that is important to some people too.

2) Can our society be both culturally united and diverse?  Can other societies?  Can our high school?
  How?
I think that society can be culturally united and diverse at the same time.  I think that other societies could too, and even our high school.  Even though we each have our own seperate cultures and traditions we all have one in common too.  We all live in the United States and we all celebrate some American holidays, such as the Fourth of July.  In a school we are all different too but when it's a pep rally or something we all come together to wish our team luck.

3) What are the most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today?  Can they be effectively addressed or overcome?
I think the most important issues challenging cultural unity would be the effects from slavery and racism.  Sometimes african americans would say things like 'it's because I'm black' or something like that and blame it on the color of their skin and I really don't think that is helping anything.  I don't think that they should be able to say that as an excuse, it's kinda silly to me.  I know that sometimes that may be the case but I know that the majority of people now adays don't really look at the color of skin as a problem.

I totally agree. It also hurts certain groups of people from getting jobs or getting as high in ranks as other people in the government.

  1. America should be considered as a 'melting pot' because America tries to come together with other countries to help them any way possible or help other country. There are many different races in America and still there are peace between others. Americans define their cultural identity by following their own beliefs and culture. They are not afraid to do their own things in their own way. They are very independent.
  2. It can be culturally united but it can also be individual because there are many different cultures in America and people will follow their own and/or both. Our school has many different students that comes from other cultures and countries. They might practice their countries culture and beliefs and they also follow the american culture.
  3. In many cultures they follow different religion and beliefs. There are countries that are devided because of religions and race. I think if people worked out their differences and try to get along they could come together and be united as one.

I definitely agree with what you said. One thing I was wondering was if you think that people's views could really change?  I know it is possible but do you think we'll get to see it actually happen? Good job explaining your reasoning!!  I also liked what you said about the basketball team.  That is so true. If people would look at it like that we wouldn't be so not united as a country. Good job!!!

1) Should American society be considered a ‘melting pot’? How should Americans define their cultural identity?

Yes, America is ‘melting pot,’ it has so many people who have come from nearly every country around the world. American culture itself comes from these cultures meeting and borrowing from each other to create a unique culture. The ‘melting pot’ allows people to hold onto their own culture while at the same time they can be a part of America’s unique culture. I think that Americans can see themselves as Americans and still recognize their own cultural background and I think a lot of Americans do that.

3) What are the most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today? Can they be effectively addressed or overcome?

The biggest issues facing unity and diversity are the prejudices that many people hold. Some people do not notice their own prejudices or do not consider them problems but they are really hurting our society. These prejudices make it difficult to achieve cultural unity because people cannot be unified if they feel put down or discriminated against. I think if people would notice that their own prejudices really have an effect on society and that, even if they think they’re harmless, it’s still hurting many people. People can change and some do, but it is difficult and many people feel uncomfortable to address these issues and if people continue to feel that way then things will never be able to change.

4) What examples of cultural diversity exist in American society (and New Bedford High School) today? How are they demonstrated (or not) in music, movies, books, advertising, families, workplaces or the government?

In this area there is a lot of cultural diversity and I think a lot of people notice that and can appreciate it. Diversity in music can be seen in many places, it is on TV, the music that is popular in America is not just American music, there is a lot of music that comes from different countries and it is sung in many different languages and has styles that originated in many different countries. Films from foreign countries are also becoming more popular and are being recognized for the talent of the actors and directors, not just want language they speak. People that probably would not have been interested in a movie with subtitles a few years ago are now watching these movies and learning about these different cultures. More and more families have parents that are of different races and backgrounds and the number of biracial families is growing. In the government diversity can be seen in the fact that this year Massachusetts elected its first black governor, it is the first time that a woman has been the Speaker of the House and Minnesota not only elected the first Muslim to Congress but Keith Ellison was also the first nonwhite elected to Congress for the state.

I agree with you completely. With what you said about saying that you are American or your hertiage, I am the same way. If someone were to ask me what I am the first thing I would say is that I'm Irish, English, Italian and everywhere else that my family came from because I also think that response is much more descriptive than saying 'I am America,' which isn't a bad thing to say, I just don't know many people who would respond to a question like 'what are you?' that way.

Stereotypes are also definately a problem for our society, everyone has them, whether they want to admit it or not. But so many people still look at them as being funny or harmless, but they're not, they don't realize that they are really hurting other people, so it is not always considered a problem, although it really is.

1) Should American society be considered a ‘melting pot’?  How should Americans define their cultural identity?
I think that it is a melting pot because you can identify youe self as who ever you want and know one will judge you with that if you want to consider yourself an american you can and if you want to use your heritage and say your french you can it doesnt matter as long as you know who you are and were you came from?
Americans define there culture in many ways by the way that they dress or even by the way that they want to speck and that is how they should define there culture and there is also the music that they listen to it makes them who they are.

2) Can our society be both culturally united and diverse?  Can other societies?  Can our high school?  How?
Are culturally can be anthing that we work to get it to be so it can in many ways. other societies think different then we do and they do different thing to but they can do anything that they work on just like we do that is why we have voters. Are high school can be if the state wants it to be. The mayor and the presadent lets use know what to do we the people just give them the right idea and the right votes to do it so if he wanted it to be he can if he didnt then there would be a lot of things happening so everything can be culturally united.

4) What examples of cultural diversity exist in American society (and
New Bedford
High School) today?  How are they demonstrated (or not) in music, movies, books, advertising, families, workplaces or the government

  • America should be considered as a 'melting pot' because America tries to come together with other countries to help them any way possible or help other country. There are many different races in America and still there are peace between others. Americans define their cultural identity by following their own beliefs and culture. They are not afraid to do their own things in their own way. They are very independent.
  • It can be culturally united but it can also be individual because there are many different cultures in America and people will follow their own and/or both. Our school has many different students that comes from other cultures and countries. They might practice their countries culture and beliefs and they also follow the american culture.
  • In many cultures they follow different religion and beliefs. There are countries that are devided because of religions and race. I think if people worked out their differences and try to get along they could come together and be united as one.

  • Do you think we really could be united as one?

I would have to agree on that is prob the most important challenging issue with unity today.

Say if we do end the war, do you think that there is just a few out there still planning to attack America?

Probably.  I would agree that as long as America's foreign policy is considered imperialism (whether political, economic or cultural) by many around the world, there will be threats to America.  The question still remains: what kind of world do we choose to live and love in, one of war or one of peace, one of hate and racism or one of tolerance and peace?  Those who attacked America on 9/11 were individuals, not an ethnicity or religion.  Gandhi and Dr. King both said that we should 'be the change we want to see in the world'.  Maybe that's how it begins...

Questions: There are many questions that can be asked about multiculturalism and diversity in today’s world. 4) What examples of cultural diversity exist in American society (and New Bedford High School) today?  How are they demonstrated (or not) in music, movies, books, advertising, families, workplaces or the government?

    I agreeee withyou ashhhhhh

    1. I think that the American society should be considered a "melting pot", it is a place where different ethnic groups are brought together. If you are born in the United States you are American, some identify themselves as what their ancestors are. I am Portuguese so if I was asked what I was then i would say Portuguese not American.
    2. Yes our society and others can be culturally diverse and united, because today that is what we are today. Our society is united by different cultures from all over the world, and we are diverse because each culture does things different ways, and have differnet beleifs. Our high school can also, like i said before many people from different cultures are all brought together in school.
    3. The most important issues that effect cultural unity and diversity is rasicim because that is all over the world and i think that it is wrong. I dont think that there is anything that can be done to stop these problems. It should but as of now i think that it cant be stopped.
    4. All different cultures view and beleive in diffferent ways and do what they think is right, they follow their own views and beleifs, also here at New Bedford High School.

    1) Should American society be considered a ‘melting pot’?  How should Americans define their cultural identity?
American society IS a melting pot.  There are so many people from different cultures here, it's kind of hard not to call it a melting pot.  America's cultural identity is more complicated than others i think.  We have so many different cultures from all over the world living here. And i think that's what makes this place America.
    2) Can our society be both culturally united and diverse?  Can other societies?  Can our high school?
      How?
Absolutely.  The people who live in our country are all diverse.  We all celebrate different things, we all have our different traditions and backgrounds and religions.. but i think that is what unites us. It's how so many DIFFERENT people all live in the same place.  You don't find that in other places in the world.  The question of other societies being both culturally diverse and united, I think it's possible (anything is) but i dont think that other countries would be all for it.  America is the youngest country.  All of the others have been around for up to thousands of years before.  They've had there ways set for so long and they continue to live by them and i dont think they would want so many people who practice certain things differently changing that.  Our high school is culturally diverse, but not so much united.  There is alot of hatred in this school. You hear about it everywhere you go.  There is also a lot of gang violence going on.  It's pretty hard to be united under circumstances like these.
    3) What are the most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today?  Can they be effectively addressed or overcome?

Some of the most important issues challenging cultural unity and diversity are ignorance, racism, and violence.  I think that they could eventually be addressed and overcome, but it would take a long time.  Maybe our generation can change it... I think when we get older and have children, we should teach them the importance of respecting other cultures and how ignorance and racism are wrong, and how violence solves nothing.  If we started to teach them at a young age, then there might actually be a time where cultural unity and diversity exist 100%.

i really like your answers to these questions. but i must say, a melting pot is just the blending of different people from various cultures; in other words, America just has a lot of people from different ethnic backgrounds. not neccessarily that we aren't being individuals, but that we are all part of the same country.
as for question 4, i definitely notice that too. i would like to see the whole school participate in the same event though. i think it would be a good start to uniting all of us.

    Questions:
    2) Can our society be both culturally united and diverse? Can other societies? Can our high school? How?
Our society can be both culturally united and diverse because it is already that at the moment. Our society is comprised of so many different cultures but yet everyone is American and similar in ways, mostly. Other societies can also be this way. Our high school is already culturally diverse yet united. The numerous cultures that make up the student body are different but all of the students are the same in that we are all American.
    3) What are the most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today? Can they be effectively addressed or overcome?
The most important issues challenging cultural unity and diversity today are issues of mostly thoughts about race superiority, religious views, and perhaps even racism to a point. None of these three issues have yet to be overcome even if they are addressed. Even over time I don't think that many people would be won over.
    4) What examples of cultural diversity exist in American society (and New Bedford High School) today? How are they demonstrated (or not) in music, movies, books, advertising, families, workplaces or the government?
Examples of cultural diversity in American society and New Bedford High today would be the many cultures coexisting together everywhere including parts of some cities as well. Chinatown for example is a part of being culturally diverse. Little Italy is also another example. Cultural diversity is demonstrated through music in that almost every culture has its' own music that they listen to along with their own movie actors and actresses and such that are of the same culture. Cultural diversity is also part of some families in that nowadays, it is common to see a family composed of a couple of different cultural backgrounds.

I agree completely with what you said about the hatred in our school. Too many fights break out and stuff like that everyday. >< And you're right about the teaching them at a young age because children are impressionable. :) GJ overall though. You make some very good points.

    1. American society should be considered a “melting pot” because America has all different ethnic groups joined together and they get to see everyones different personality traits and difference. b. Americans should define their cultural identity as American if they were born in the United States. Usually depending where they came from. For example, their ancestors, and culture. 2. Our society as well as other societies can be both culturally united and diverse because in today's society, anything is possible. As we know everyone is different, and have different beliefs and religion. Our public society is culturally united and diverse because we always learn something new about other people, and their lifestyles. 3.The most important issues challenging cultural unity and cultural diversity today is that their is to much racism. People need to accept each other.

Can our society be both culturally united and diverse?  Can other societies?  Can our high school?  How?

I most definitely think that its a melting pot because  we live all together , people of all different ethnicities. And no one gives up there culture and they shouldnt. I was born her in America but my family comes from Azores, Portugal and if someone asks me what nationality i am i say portuguese.  I think  that there are so many diverse people that we learn to except different nationalities around us. I think most societies are both culturally united as well as diverse but like i said MOST there are those that have only one nationality. I believe that all societies should be culturally united and diverse because the societies that arent they will eventually start to discriminate against others that are not their nationality. I think our highschool actually is because we have just about all the ethnicities you could think of and mostly all of us are pretty understanding and excepting of eachothers backgrounds.

1.Americans should define their cultural identity by doing good and positive things for their community, while setting a good example amost others.
2.some of the most challenging issues amongst today's society reguarding cultural unity and diversity are hate crimes,racsim,jealousy/envy,greed/lust for power, wanting to be superior. The outcome of all these things usally lead to violence or even death.
3.Here at NBHS,there many different types of people.I realize alot comments said by others students reguarding another student. I hear things like "look at what he/she is wearing, why what they wear that?"and then a session of laughter follows, i really don't think it's right to judge someone or make fun of them because their appearence, culture, race etc...I guess it's just tuff for some people to understand that everybody is different and equip with their own styles and their own way of doing things in a way that is comfortable for that particular person. Now,if u can't respect that your whole perspective is wack.

1.)  Yes, i think American society should be considered a melting pot.  It should beacuse america was founded upon people from all different nations.  the only people who are truely american is native american.  america is made up of people from all over the world and everyone came together and made a culture that is a melting pot.  German Americans eat mexican food and Mexican Americans eat chinese food.  we are all differnt but being american and living in america is what makes us the same.
2.) americans should difine their culture identity as diverse.  there is hardly any where in america where you can walk down the street and see everyother person being the same decented hertige as you.  any where you go you see people that are all different weather it be their religion, their skin color, the food they eat, or where their ancestors came from.  America is diverse, the people in america are diverse and thats all there is to it.
2.) our society is all ready culturally united and still diverse.  an example is food.  how many people of other cultures eat the food from other cultures.  and how many people from different backgrounds all go to church together becuase they reliogiously believe in the same things.  we come together when our nation is in distress, like 9-11, and for a moment the bigots in our society become "blind" to other cultures and put down their put downs and help.  but yet, we all come from some where different, but we still shop together and go to school together and live together.  sometimes we have bumps but no where and no one is perfect, bumps are expected....... I"m not sure if other societies can because of their government and things like that, but in my opinion any one any where can, as long as they have the privelige to.  ....... our high school is like our society. we are diverse yet culturally united.  i have friends of all heriteges, but yet thier family is different from my family.
