Note: Since this assignment is a bit longer than the others so far, I am counting it as three assignments [300 points]. Source: http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2002/twotownsofjasper/index.html (Check out the site and see special features, where everyone is now, how and why the film was made, and extra resources concerning race relations and hate crimes in America today.) Part I: Discussion Questions (Please answer all questions in your own words. [80 points] Say what you think but try not to limit yourself to single word answers or single sentence answers. Also, respond to another student’s post with comments, relevant websites, suggestions or questions. [20 points] Speak your truth!) What happens when people are judged by the way they look? What is prejudice?List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others. What are some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people? Why do you think some people are prejudiced? What is tolerance?List examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others. What do people gain or lose from respecting or not respecting others’ diversity? What do you think the United States and the world gain or lose from respecting or not respecting diversity? What are some things that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time? What can people do to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons? Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice? How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views? Part II: Group Questions (Work will be assigned in groups listed below. Here’s how it’s going to work: In the forum, each person should answer each of the questions in your group, [80 points] but all students should comment or respond to whatever posts they like [20 points]. Talk about the issues out loud if you’d like with people in your group. Share ideas and help each other. Be honest and open. Speak your truth!) Group #1: Heather, Donald, Tiffany, Amanda & Nathan What are the demographics of your community? How is it like or unlike Jasper? Through the course of the film, viewers see varied expressions of racism, from extreme white supremacism to mundane stereotyping. What forms of racism are present in your community right now? Have the forms of racism changed over time? What actions can you take to diminish the instances of racism you have identified? What were the causes in Jasper that led to this crime? Do you think something similar to the murder of James Byrd could happen in your community? What kinds of things make it likely or unlikely that such a crime could take place where you live? What can you do to decrease the likelihood of it happening? One black woman in the film observes, “Jasper has a lot of skeletons.” Are there “skeletons” in your community? Have hate crimes happened in your community? If so, how did you respond? How did your community respond? Group #2: Jamie, Leslie, Jenna, Mason & Carmen Do you think life in Jasper changed after the trials? If so, how? Consider the following comments: “I’ve change my views partially. . . . I don’t want to have anything to dowith the Aryan Circle, the Aryan Brotherhood, or the gangs. . . . Bottomine is that you’ve got to treat people, all people, the way you want to betreated, know what I mean? That’s what I do now. I used to not do that.”-Trent Smith“The black community and the white community have made very realefforts to speak to one another perhaps more than we ever did, to makeeye contact, to be more concerned, I think, than we ever were before. And I think that’s been having an impact.” - Father Ron Fosage“We can’t change a white man’s heart, how they feel and think about us.We can expose it, like we did with Bill King. . . but you can’t necessarilychange it. You live with it.” — Walter Diggles
In Jasper, the fence dividing the town cemetery into black and white sections symbolized divisions in the community at large. Do similar symbols exist in your community? Would it make a difference to dismantle them? If so, how might you begin that process? Are the attitudes of people in the film similar to attitudes in your own community? If so, would viewers of this film therefore come away knowing more about you and your community? Is there any way in which viewers might be misled about you or your community? Group #3: Michael D., Valdir, Jerome, Katelyn, Michael J. & Catherine The film is shot in some of Jasper’s gathering places — the beauty salon, the Bell-Jim Hotel, the church — most of them segregated by race. What are the gathering places in your community? Are they segregated or integrated? Are there places in your community where people from different groups can gather comfortably? If not, might you be able to create such a space?Should all spaces be integrated, or is it appropriate for a community to have some segregated spaces?
Two Towns of Jasper’s camera lens allows blacks to “sit in” on conversations between whites and vice versa, giving both groups an opportunity to get to know each other a little better. What do you know about the perspectives and experiences of people in your community whose ethnicity, race, or religion are different from yours? Are there people who cross between groups? Where does your information about people different from you come from? Are you satisfied that this information is complete and accurate? What kinds of sources would provide others with the most accurate information about you? What can you do to support or promote accurate information sources in your community? Group #4: Vanessa, Kevin, Jaimie, Alexandra, Diego & Nicholai After one of the verdicts, the victorious prosecutor observes that race relations have come a long way: “There was a time when cops ignored facts,” he said. What is the history of blacks in the justice system in your community? Has justice in your community “come a long way”? Can you think of any specific examples? In the film, we see people coming together in worship. What role do the religious institutions in your community play in either bringing people together or keeping them divided? If you are affiliated with a religious institution, what role do you think it plays? What can you do to shape that role? Contemplating the guilty verdict and sentence of one of Jasper’s hometown sons, a resident observes, “When you know someone, you want to cut him slack.” Are you more likely to “cut slack” to people you know, people who look like you, or share your religion, or live in your neighborhood? When you know someone it’s harder to hate or stereotype them. How do we get to know people who are different from us? Are there ways that you can help people from different groups meet and spend time with one another? Group #5: Julissa, Shallyn, Winnie, Sabrina, Ashley & Katie What insights does the film provide to people whose exploration of racism goes beyond relations between blacks and whites? What is the significance of the film’s title? Describe the reaction of each “town” to the murder and the trials. What accounts for the differences? In what ways are the actions and perceptions of individuals in the film influenced by their race, and in what ways are they influenced by other factors such as gender, generation, family relationships, or personality traits like how people deal with anger and grief?
If you had the power to make Two Towns of Jasper required viewing for some people in your town, city, or community, who would be on your list? How might you arrange a screening for the people on your list? The final line of the film is “Coming together, that’s what we need.” How do we do that? How might you create a place in your community where people can “come together”?
Part III: Social Activism It's really simple... What od you think should be done about the issues raised in this story? What can be done? What will be done? What do you want to do as a class, as a school as a member of your community to 'be the change you want to see in the world'? Write your answer for [80 points] and respond, comment or offer a suggestion to another student's post [20 points].
Part1 1.When people are judged by the way they look the people who are judgeing them sometimes get the wrong idea about them also if everyone judged people by the way they look the world would be alot different 2.Prejudice is when you judge something by the way it looks or the way you want to judge it before knowing anything about it 3.One example of prejudice resulting in unfairtreatment of people is what happened long ago to colored people how they didnt allow colored people to do the same things as white people. 4.From not respecting other peoples diversity's people are losing knowledge about other peoples backrounds and how they live. I dont think that people are gaining anything. 5.Yes this film deepin's my understanding of racism because i didnt think it occured as much now but it really does. 6.It contradicts what i thought about racism because i didnt think people actaully did those things now a days 7.To help create an enviroment that respects all persons people should start trying to make people understand more that racism is not a good thing and it shouldnt be allowed in the U.S anymore 8.One thing that can happen if people practice intolerance is people will just start ignoring problems. 9.If the U.S respected diversity it would get alot of respect from people. 10.I think some people are prejudice just because it was how they were brought up.
What happens when people are judged by the way they look? When people are judged by the way that they look, people are not treated with equal respect and are not treated fairly.
What is prejudice? List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others. Prejudice is when someone doesn't like someone or something because of a biased opinion. Some examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype othes is the color of skin, ethnic background, accents, and sexual orientation.
What are some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people? Slavery is an example of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people.
Why do you think some people are prejudiced? I think that some people are prejudiced because when they grew up their parents or the people around them are prejudiced too and they get their views from them and how they treat other people. What is tolerance? List examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others. Tolerance is when you can accept people for who they are and you can tolerate things that you may not approve of but you aren't going to take it personally or take it into your own hands to get rid of it. Someone who is Jewish may not believe the same things as someone who is Catholic or Christian but they still tolerate each other and talk to each other regardless of what their personal beliefs are.
What do people gain or lose from respecting or not respecting others’ diversity? By respecting other people you might be able to learn about someone else's culture or background. What do you think the United States and the world gain or lose from respecting or not respecting diversity? I think that by respecting diversity the world would be a better place because people wouldn't have as many issues with each other. Most of the problems in the world nowadays are there because someone doesn't approve of someone elses beliefs of even what their ancestors did.
What are some things that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time? When people practice intolerance for a long period of time the group of people that they are intolerant towards may start to go against the normal practice of not tolerating them. There will probably be a movement to make people realize that they are just as good as anyone else and no one should be prejudiced against them. What can people do to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons? I think that we need to teach tolerance in school systems early on in someone’s life so that while they are younger they can become more friendly with everyone and see everyone as a person and not a color, religion, or anything else that might set a person apart from another. Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice? I think that this film does deepen my understanding of racism because it kind of made me realize that calling someone black or what ever is kind of racist in itself and I also had no idea that places in the south were still kind of segregated. How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views? It kind of confirms what I thought about them because they are just not as well informed as people who are not racist. They only knows the views of people who are racist and have never considered a thought that isn’t racist.Once they get an idea about people being equal they kind of start to realize what they thought before was wrong.
In my opinon i believe that Jasper changed after the trials.I think some people started to realzie that they were living in the same community as the colored people and it was wrong not to talk to them or even look at them. Also, the white people thought more of the colored people after the trial.I believe that after the trial the people changed.
In Jasper there is a fence dividing the town cemetery into black and white sections in my community i dont think that there is anything like that, that would symbolize divisions in the community that i know of.
The attitude of the people in the film are nothing like the peoples attitudes in my community.
When people are judged by the way they look people don’t judge the person like they should or see the person for their qualities.
Prejudice is where someone has something against a person because of his or her features.Prejudice would make a white supremacist to believe that a black person would do something wrong or steal or kill someone because he or she was black.
How some black people would get hired after a white person because he is black
People are prejudice because that’s what they are raised or that they don’t understand or are afraid of them because they look different.
Tolerance is just accepting someone for who they are no matter their differences and tolerance is by not calling people names making fun of them for accents or cultural difference tolerating someone is just respecting the way they are.
You can gain knowledge and a friend by respecting others culture but by disrespecting something close to another’s heart you lose all respect from that person.
The United States could gain or lose the good relationship with other countries if their culture is not respected and then we would have an enemy as a country and lose trade.
Deep roots of intolerance make a near impossible gap to cross for their children to become tolerant of other race.
To create such an environment we need to move on into the future there can be no more racism and intolerance people need to understand and respect other cultures so that we can become a united world.
No it doesn’t really deepen my understanding because I already understood how racism it spread throughout the world.
It confirms what I believed about people with racist views that no matter if it is behind locked doors or in their faces that people will always be racist.
PART 1: What happens when people are judged by the way they look? – When people get judged by how they look, most of the time, other people get the wrong idea of that person and may even treat someone different just because they don’t know the truth about that person. People who judge others by how they look are most likely going to be driven to have a wrong idea of that person. What is prejudice? List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others. – Prejudice to me, is basically having a set idea of someone or a group of people because of certain circumstances. It could be based on gender, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual preference, etc. When people are prejudice because of those circumstances, it is very easy for people to easily feel the same idea about many others because of the same thing. Stereotyping is another way of being prejudice towards people. They go hand in hand with each other. What are some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people? – Some examples would be relating to the movie we watched. We can see how because there was a sense of racism by those white men they went and dragged that black man to his death. This was definitely a good example of how people’s thoughts and ideas of certain people could drive them to do pretty crazy things like even killing someone. Another example would be in school. Many people don’t want to believe about teachers treating students differently but it happens.I know this because it happened to my cousin. My cousin’s teacher threatened to write her up just because she was trying to explain a math problem to her friend and happened to be talking Spanish to the kid.I definitely think that was a good example of how some people take advantage of their high positions and use it against other people to get a message across. Why do you think some people are prejudiced? – I think people are in a way influenced to be prejudiced. If someone is given an idea, positive or negative, about someone else that is different they would be influenced to treat that person differently and have a certain idea about that certain person or group of people. That is only one half, though. There is also the other half where it is up to that person to decide how to act and how to treat that person. It’s a 50/50 thing. What is tolerance? List examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others. – Tolerance is dealing with another person’s differences and not letting those differences get in the way of you getting to know that person. A way that people practice tolerance is having friends that are from other backgrounds. That shows that you won’t let those differences stop you from having a friendship with that person. It shows that you don’t care about that part when it comes to choosing your friends. What do people gain or lose from respecting or not respecting others’ diversity? – When someone respects someone else’s diversity they also gain the respect of that person as well. But if someone doesn’t respect someone else’s diversity, they lose the respect of that person and that person’s ethnic group. You lost a lot more by being prejudiced towards someone then trying to put those differences aside and looking at the actual person and not their ethnicity. What do you think the United States and the world gain or lose from respecting or not respecting diversity? – The United States would gain a lot more support and respect from many other countries. By the United States not respecting a certain group of people because they are different, other countries don’t respect the United States and would not completely back it up. What are some things that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time? – If a group of people practice intolerance for a long period of time those thoughts automatically become a part of that person. They will eventually get into the habit of teaching others their way of thinking and would eventually try to convince others that their way of thinking is the right way of thinking. It would just become a chain that would continue to grow and grow. What can people do to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons? – It would be much easier if it started with the leaders. Many people are still very dependant on their leaders and I think if the people in charge would promote it and try their hardest to enforce it, people would start to get into the habit of being tolerant to others.I also think that teenagers could have a big impact on changing the way people think. Most people think that teens don’t know about these kinds of things but the truth is that we get to see it up close at school. Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice? - It definitely gave me a better view and better understanding of the crazy things people can do when they have a certain view of certain people. How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views? - It definitely confirmed what I thought about people who hold racist views.I always new that people could go to dangerous measures to get a certain point across but to actually see it and know that it had actually happened made it that much more real and believable.
Part I: Discussion Questions What happens when people are judged by the way they look? When people are judged by the way they look, they are judged by what's on the outside rather than what is inside. Judging looks may give people the wrong impression of someone and hurtful things could be said. What is prejudice? List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others. Prejudice is hatred against a certain race, gender, sexuality ect. Prejudice causes some people to stereotype others because their not liking another race or whatever it may be, causes them to pinpoint that particular characteristic in people, or the assumption that someone is a certain way. What are some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people? The movie we watched is the ultimate example. Not only did it tell what had happened, it showed the views of the people in the community. Why do you think some people are prejudiced? I think people’s prejudiced actions are caused by their own ignorance. They are closed minded people. It could be that their parents raised them that way, but I think that as they get older, they develop their own opinions and they can choose to still have that prejudice in them. What is tolerance? List examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others. I don’t think tolerance means to not be prejudice. I think in order to not be prejudice, you would have to be blind towards race or religion or whatever the case may be.I think tolerance is having a prejudice feeling towards a group of people, but not acting on it and just learning to live life around it. It’s one thing to respect someone but tolerating seems to me like you just have to live with something. What do people gain or lose from respecting or not respecting others’ diversity? I think by respecting others’ diversity, people gain more of an open mind and will have a fuller life.By not respecting people, you just have hatred inside of you and you let it take over.Disrespect shows a weakness in an individual. Respect shows strength and the ability to live alongside people peacefully. What do you think the United States and the world gain or lose from respecting or not respecting diversity? If the U.S or the world were respecting of diversity, then there wouldn’t be war.If the world disrespected diversity, then everything would be segregated. What are some things that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time? I think violence would be the biggest problem over a long period of time. Riots, wars, and murders would all be possibilities. What can people do to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons? Just make sure that everyone is treated equally.Same opportunities, respect, and rights as each other. Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice? I knew that racism and prejudice were still around, but I didn’t realize to that extent some people still go to in order to show their hate towards others. It really made me feel sick to the stomach to see how people can be such monsters. How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views? It confirmed my beliefs on people with racist views. It shows how cold hearted and afraid people are.
Do you think life in Jasper changed after the trials? I used to not do that.” - Trent Smith “The black community and the white community have made very realefforts to speak to one another perhaps more than we ever did, to makeeye contact, to be more concerned, I think, than we ever were before. And I think that’s been having an impact.” - Father Ron Fosage “We can’t change a white man’s heart, how they feel and think about us.We can expose it, like we did with Bill King. . . but you can’t necessarilychange it. You live with it.” — Walter Diggles
I do think that life in Jasper changed after the trials. I think that both the African Americans and the White Americans in Jasper are both less prejudice towards each other.I think that they realize that racism will most likely always be a factor everywhere and you can’t really abolish it completely. But I do think that they will try their hardest to make relations between the two groups as good as possible so that life can be as enjoyable as possible.
In Jasper, the fence dividing the town cemetery into black and white sections symbolized divisions in the community at large. Do similar symbols exist in your community? Would it make a difference to dismantle them? If so, how might you begin that process?I don’t think that anything like the fence dividing the graveyard exists anywhere in New Bedford. If there was something like that and it was dismantled I think that it would make a difference and I think that you could probably begin that process by maybe making a petition for a bunch of people in school or the city to sign and bring it to someone who could do something about it.
Are the attitudes of people in the film similar to attitudes in your own community? If so, would viewers of this film therefore come away knowing more about you and your community? Is there any way in which viewers might be misled about you or your community?
I don’t know of anybody that is really racist, I mean I know people who joke about it once in a while but they don’t mean any harm.I don’t think that this video portrays anything in my community. I think that the only thing that would be anything close to what happened in Jasper, TX would be the whole thing last year at Puzzle’s with Jacob Robida and that was for a whole different reason. No one in this community is really seriously racist around here that I know of.
Questions 1.When people are judged by the way they look, they may feel not good enough, not loved, sad and angry. 2.Predjudice is a form of hatred; most prejudice issues are summoned by the human race, background, culture, and religion. For instance, many people cant stand Spanish people cause the way they look or act and how they always cooks rice and beans.(Most cases are much more serious, but this is just an example) 3.This reminds me of the film we watched about James Byrd. On a certain day, all the races had the day off from school except for the blacks. 4.Not enough love in the world, many young children were raised to discriminate and not love all equally by there parents who are unable to put the past behind them and love one another. 5.Tolerance to me is the ability to ignore or absorb rude or cruel things that are done or said to you, as you keep your cool and not let it bother you. You can learn it by loving yourself alot and not caring what anyone says about you, cause you know your a great and beautiful person inside and out, And you must keep telling yourself that. 6.If you show respect most likely you'll receive it in return unless you show respect to a racist, it may not work that way, but even if it doesn’t that's when the tolerance becomes useful, turn around and walk away and never get physical or use force unless you are in harm's way. 7. Respect to diversity will bring about peace. Disrespect more war and gang violence, more lives taken. 8.Intolerance would just bring about more violence and problems, but also lets people fight and speak for justice and what they believe in, which is a beautiful thing to me. 9.Go to church. 10.This film definitely gets a better feel and touching visual experience of racism and how horrible it is, it's just sad. 11.i don't like racist, I don't want anything to do with them, and I think their cold hearted and horrible people.
I think if something like this happens again in a racist community like that then they should try to get the community to come together and help the families that lost someone. I think alot will be done if this happens again because that was almost 10 years ago and alot has changed and the goverment would do something to help out.As a member of the community in the world i would like everyone to get along instead of wars happening and people fighting for no reason.
Q1. What are the demographics of your community? How is it like or unlike Jasper? Through the course of the film, viewers see varied expressions of racism, from extreme white supremacism to mundane stereotyping. What forms of racism are present in your community right now? Have the forms of racism changed over time? What actions can you take to diminish the instances of racism you have identified? A1. In New Bedford there are many races. The many people that live here can express them freely. There are whites, blacks, dominicans, puerto ricans, guatemalons, cape verdeans etc. There are a couple of elementary school, and high schools. There are people that are fortunate to live in an actual house, some rent out apartments, some live in housing projects, there are many. There are many jobs for people that graduate and for imigrants that come from out of the U.S.A. The people here live in many parts of New Bedford: the south end(good), noth end(alright), west end(bad). The west end is were it happens to be the worst part of the community. There are many shootings and robberies.
Q2. What were the causes in Jasper that led to this crime? Do you think something similar to the murder of James Byrd could happen in your community? What kinds of things make it likely or unlikely that such a crime could take place where you live? What can you do to decrease the likelihood of it happening? A2. The causes in Jasper that led to the crime was discrimination against black people, the whites and blacks were seperated from eachother. Of course something like that can happen in our community, we have many bad things almost like that happening here. If people say something wrong to a person of either color, they may take it offensive and retaliate. We should at least watch what we say to people and think before we say things.
Q3. One black woman in the film observes, “Jasper has a lot of skeletons.” Are there “skeletons” in your community? Have hate crimes happened in your community? If so, how did you respond? How did your community respond?
A3.The "skeletons" that the black woman is talking about is the problems that there are. Skeletons are seen as a bad thing and so are the problems. In our community there are many "skeletons". We have shootings, murders, discrimination. I learn not to get involved with problems that dont pretain to me. In my community, the cops try to stop these violent actions but it just happens again weeks or days after.

In the justice community blacks used to be not even acknowledged it didn’t matter if there was a crime committed against them it was overlooked, now the community has changed the blacks in the community are now treated equally and have just as many rights as we do.Religion help in bringing people together because it brings them onto a common ground and they have something in common they believe in the same things which make them see that they are not so different.Yes it is true that if you know someone that you will cit them slack if they are your friend you don’t want to believe that they would do something evil or wrong you will give them the benefit of the doubt.
When people are judged by the way they look they feel different than how they feel around people who don't judge them. Like lets say they go to school and everyone there judges them, they feel less confident, less secure, and more uncomfortable then they do if they were at home around people that don't judge them. People shouldn't be judged just on the way they look because everyone in the world looks a different way.No one is just like some one else unless they are identical twins.
Prejudice is when people are hateful against other people because of race, religion, sexuality, the type of clothes they wear, and just generally things that are skin deep.Like when you watch TV and you hear “pit bull dog bites little child and leaves him scared for life”.People start to think that pit bull dogs are all vicious and that you can’t trust them and all these bad things, just because they heard of one dog doing it.I have four pit bulls, two boys and two girls and they are the most loving dogs I’ve own. They would protect me and the people in my home until they can’t any more. The key to owning dogs is knowing how to train them.Any dog can bite someone.Chihuahua’s are more likely to bite a person than a pit bull is, but because Paris Hilton has one they’re seen to be “cute” and really they are mean dogs. And people do the same with people. They hear on TV that a black man shot another man. They don’t hear the reason why and they don’t bother to learn the reason why and all of a sudden they stereotype black people all because of one persons actions.
I think that some people are prejudice because they parents are prejudice and that the opinion was nurtured all their life and they never grew out of thinking that way. Some people don’t grow up or better them selves from their parents.
Tolerance is when you can take an amount of one thing until a certain point.Like how the black man in the video said how when a white man killed a black man everyone stayed quiet to not make any more trouble. They tolerated the killings so there wouldn’t be more than what there was.I don’t think people should have to tolerate being treated differently though.
When people respect people they earn respect back.Respect feels good. But when someone disrespects people, other people don’t respect them unless they are just as rude and disrespectful as them.Respect is an important thing and no one should take it for granted.
I think that the world loses respect for not respecting diversity because the world is diverse. The US is particularly ignorant because we are the nation that is mixed with the world and we have at least one person of every culture living here, and our nation treats people like differently and wrong because they do things different.
When people practice intolerance over a long period of time people will probably kill off the human race.If people aren’t tolerant then they can be very mean, hateful, and hurtful people.Respect, tolerance, and diversity are some things we need in our lives to live with one another.
I’m not sure what people can do to create an environment that encourages respect and peace, but if someone does know a way to do it, I’m all for it!
I’ve always knew things like this have happened in our world but I’ve never liked it.I know how it feels to be put against because of something that I can’t help.Sometimes I think that the white people that are prejudice should be treated how they treat other people and maybe, just maybe they wouldn’t like it too much. But then again, there are some sick people in our world.
It makes me think that those people never grew up, they never developed their own opinion to people and they never realized just how much they hurt people. When the man that was in the first trial walked out of that court room smiling, I was sick to my stomach.I couldn’t even begin to talk about how I feel about that movie because it would be a story.
It's really simple... What do you think should be done about the issues raised in this story? What can be done? What will be done? I think that there should be a government funded class in schools in Jasper that teaches tolerance towards other ethnicities and beliefs just like this class [except it's not government funded, heh.] and I think that the parents should also be taught tolerance towards other people, because they are really the main cause of the racism. I think that that would be an entirely possible thing to do in Jasper, but I doubt that they would actually do that.
What do you want to do as a class, as a school as a member of your community to 'be the change you want to see in the world'? I think maybe we could have a cultural fair [like a science fair type dealy] and should have stations for different cultures in the world and have maybe facts and food from the culture. That would be a pretty cool idea to try and teach people about other cultures so they understand it and maybe aren't as prejudice towards them.
Part I 1. When people are judged by the way that they look, their feelings get hurt because the person doesn’t get to know them and they judge a book by their cover and that should never be done because everyone should be treated with equal respect. 2. Prejudice is when you judge prematurely and irrationally.
Some examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others are if you’re white than you believe that there is no prejudice in your community and if you’re colored than you believe there is prejudice in your community. This is false; people shouldn’t make assumptions about anyone or anything.
3. Some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people are the movie The Two Towns of Jasper, the KKK, and gangs like the Bloods. 4. I think some people are prejudice because of the way they are raised by their families and they don’t know right from wrong. Also, by the way they see others react to people of different backgrounds. 5. Tolerance is the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others. Some examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others are abiding by the law and rules of the community or school or workplace. 6. People gain knowledge and respect from respecting others; they lose respect by not respecting others’ diversity. 7. The United States gains respect and allies from other countries from respecting diversity and the United States loses allies and respect from nations by not respecting diversity. The world remains neutral or not at war by respecting diversity, although there are wars every now and then like with Iraq for example. 8. Something’s that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time are hate acts against a particular group, race, or religion. 9. People can practice tolerance and take part in their community to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons. 10. This film deepens my understanding of racism or prejudice because there are people out there in this world who don’t believe that everyone is equal and they even frown upon some people and their beliefs or color just because it’s not their own and there not use to it. Also the unfair treatment of the three men whom were prosecuted. They killed an innocent man and they should die the same way. ie. an eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth. 11. It contradicts or confirms what you believe about people who hold racist views because people shouldn’t be racist at all there’s no reason for any particular person to hate anyone or anything. Hate’s such a strong word and you only live once, so you should live your life without hate or regret.
Part I: Discussion Questions What happens when people are judged by the way they look? People are often misjudged due to appearance wise. They are grouped together in someone’s mind as their main thoughts about that particular type of people. People shouldn’t be judging people by appearance because anyone can dress nicely and such but be a complete idiot despite their appearance and vice versa.
What is prejudice? List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others. To me, prejudice is when someone is biased against another due to how they view that other individual on many levels maybe such as ethnicity, physical differences, or perhaps even gender. Prejudice can cause many stereotypes. One example would be that some people don’t particularly like people of Asian descent. Speaking from personal experience, there had been someone that had called the restaurant I work at seeking employment. When we had told the person that the restaurant was not hiring at the moment, they had started ranting on the phone about how the restaurant doesn’t hire anybody without an Asian background. Needless to say, I hung up the phone on them since they were being quite atrocious on the phone and had started making racial comments. Maybe if that person had actually shown up to the restaurant and looked around, perhaps he would’ve have noticed that about half of the staff at the restaurant aren’t of Asian ethnicity. -.- From this experience, I think that the person who had called thought he had been prejudiced against which then led towards his Neanderthal-like behavior which included stereotyping the Asian ‘race’. -.- What are some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people? Prejudice that resulted in unfair treatment of people can be found in many instances. One such example would be that someone walking down the street that’s wearing scruffy looking clothes and looked like they haven’t shaved in over months can be mistreated by another person who sees this ‘hobo’ and thinks to themselves that the hobo would probably live in a cardboard box somewhere under a bridge. They would then think lowly of them and either ignores them all together or perhaps if they’re immature enough, they would start making comments. Why do you think some people are prejudiced? I think some people are prejudiced due to the fact that no matter where you are in the world, there will always be at least one person there that doesn’t like someone else due to quite a factor of things. These factors could range anywhere from being just too poor in the eyes of one person or even being too ugly looking to another. Anything can cause prejudice against another and I think the root of that prejudice is that they were just raised that way or through circumstances involving that individual or perhaps something they witnessed, it caused this type of prejudice to form. What is tolerance? List examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others. Tolerance is basically when you put up with whatever is thrown in your way and to the point where you don’t rely on yourself to deal with it. Whether it be something that is happening at the moment, or rather someone that had maybe started talking to them or something. An example of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others is how some people who didn’t like another due to certain things like religion or maybe their physical appearances tolerate each other though and come to an understanding or close enough. What do people gain or lose from respecting or not respecting others’ diversity? People gain friends and meet new people when respecting ones’ diversity. They will be bringing forth another generation of people who will come to respect others’ diversity just like them. Also, the world would be closer to achieving global peace and a world with no racial bias hopefully. Although many good things do turn up something bad in the long run most of the time. If they don’t respect others’ diversity, they would making new enemies and creating chaos within their homes and environment and such. They would be bringing about a global disaster if everyone didn’t respect each other’s diversity. What do you think the United States and the world gain or lose from respecting or not respecting diversity? I think the same thing as I had stated earlier would apply to the U.S and the world as well. What are some things that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time? Some things that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time are that massive disruptions can occur all over cities and towns, fights would occur all over the place, and pretty soon everybody would end up secluding each other. What can people do to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons? People can learn to respect each other through maybe perhaps events and such that promotes respect for everyone regardless of any bias at all. They could also have seminars or maybe even conferences and such that deal with these types of issues so that in our future, there may be a place of harmony and such where people can live without being targeted against. Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice? This film does indeed deepen my understanding of racism and prejudice. It showed to me that even in this country which promotes equality and such for all its’ citizens, it’s not the case of some of the few who oppose it. It also made me realize how much some people would believe when the ones involved include family or close friends. How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views? It confirms what I believe about people who hold racist views. This film showed me that the people who are racist tend to look at people and just group them all together according to what they believe about that certain race and that if opportunity shows up as an open door, they will take it if intoxicated or evoked enough.
It's really simple... What don you think should be done about the issues raised in this story? What can be done? What will be done? What do you want to do as a class, as a school as a member of your community to 'be the change you want to see in the world'? Write your answer for [80 points] and respond, comment or offer a suggestion to another student's post [20 points].I think they should make more laws and freedom of speech should not protect them and I feel as though they should make activities were its required by the town and they have to interact with a different race. What will be done is a tough question because I cannot do any thing. Some one within there school or community could make meetings spreading equality and how equality is notpracticed.
When people are judged by the way they look the people doing the judging don’t fully get the experience of meeting that person to see if their a good person or not.
I think prejudice is when someone doesn’t like someone else by the color of his or her skin or how they dress or what kind of music they listen to
An example of prejudice is when my black friends and me go to a restaurant and there are a lot of white people there and they look at you funny or make you wait longer for your food if they don’t like how you look, like MIKES in Fairhaven
Some people already are prejudice because of their family when they were little but that is how most prejudice people start out they get the idea from someone else.
Some people show respect for others by helping them or their kids like the boys and girls club of New Bedford it accepts all types of kids no matter what race or what they believe in, they give back to the kids and teach them to not be hateful that’s a way certain people practice tolerance.
I think people lose respect for their selves and they lose knowledge when they don’t respect other people’s diversity because they can’t learn about other cultures.
The United States and the world is losing a lot of heritage when they don’t respect diversity, us people in America could learn a lot more from the countries that we know nothing about because there’s so much prejudice in the government.
A lot of things can happen if intolerance is practiced for a long period of time, like the kids of the person who is practicing it can learn it and pass it on to their friends and then it’s a whole lot of racism going on like there is now and since they been practicing it for so long they cant change the way they think
We can do what this class is doing talk about it and let each other know its wrong and just the people hear about prejudice they will hear about the right thing to do.
No I knew it was that bad things just as bad or to an extent happen everyday this movie just got into detail and I want to thank Mr.E for showing it for the movie for the kids who think this stuff never happens.
The movie showed me people with racist views get it from society and its put in their head and there’s no reason that we all cant get along.

i agree and i think a science fair is very creative and maybe it would work we just got toput our ideas into action.
I really like your answers, I can tell that you really thought about it. I especially like your answer to number 4.
Leslie wrote: PART 1: What happens when people are judged by the way they look? I agree with how you explained that stereotyping and prejudice go hand in hand. It is a shame that people misuse their power of higher authority. Your cousin should go smack that teacher upside the head for what they did. xD By the way, nice job on your answers to the questions. ^.^

I think that your ideas are good but everyone should be protected by freedom of speech. The nly thing I think they should do is maybe make it so that you can't put down other people and be prejudiced towards anybody in your speech.
I think the issue should be addressed and that people need to start to form the bridge in understanding the other person and that the racism needs to turn into communication and the bigotry turned into companionship I still think that nothing will be done about it because of the sheer fact the people aren’t willing to swallow their hatred and bury the hatchet they don’t want to change and aren’t willing to do so. I want people to stop hating each other and realize that the only difference is because a different reflection of light off the skin that to hate somebody for a different color is to hate an apple for being green instead of red.PART 3
1.What happens when people are judged by the way they look? They may not get opportunities that they really should be able to get.2. What is prejudice? List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others.Prejudice is when someone has hate towards someone else due to there own beliefs. One example is when someone hears about a certain race committing a crime over and over again. And they connect them with those things.3. an example would be Mexican man going for a job and not getting it because of his color. 4.I think they are prejudice either by the way they are raised and have been taught to hate a certain race or they see another race as a threat of some kind.5.Tolerance is how much u can handle a certain thing. examples are speaking at rallies for peace or something.6.If the U.S respects countries they will form strong bonds with them that may help our country run better. If they disrespect we will lose friendships and could be a war causing threat.7.If people practice intolerance for a while they will not like to many races besides there own.8. They could have conventions or after school programs to get kids from all races together and do fun activities so they can relate to 1 another.9. it makes me see how real racism is because around here I have never heard of anyone committing a heinous crime such as the murder of James Byrd.10. it shows me that racist people really need to get outta there lil world and know that they will never get rid of a certain race whether they like it or not.
When people are judged by the way they look many different things can happen.First of, they may start hating the way they look, an may become a target for bullies.
Prejudice is when someone hates or discriminates against anothers nationality, race, gender, or ethnicity.Prejudices cause some to stereotype others because if they see someone from a certain race, they automatically associate them with certain qualities. For example, if someone who dislikes Cape Verdean people because they were robbed by someone of that descent, they think that all Cape Verdeans rob peopleand they dislike the whole race.
An example of prejudices resulting in unfair treatment towards people would be if someone from a different race were highly qualified for a job and didn’t get the job because of their race, gender, etc.
I think some people are prejudice because they are ignorant. Also I believe it has a lot to do with the way people are brought up, if they are
brought up to be prejudice that’s what they’re going to believe.
Tolerance is something that everyone should practice, it is when you finda respectful alternative to deal with certain issues.Examples of how people practice tolerance and respect towards others are by speaking up against prejudices and learning about different cultures.
People only gain when they respect others diversities. They gain knowledge, friends, and respect from others. When you disrespect someone, you lose a lot.You lose respect , you lose friends, you lose the privelegde to get to know others and others diversities.
The United States and the whole world for that matter also only gain from respecting others. They gain unity, strong friendships between other countries, and peace. From disrespect, they lose everything and it only creates conflicts.
Some things that can happen when people practice tolerance over a long period of time is unity among everyone of all ages.
To create an environment that encourages respect for everyone is to practice tolerance.
No, because I knew that there was racism and prejudices in the world. However, I didn’t think that there were still place in the United States that lived so seperated by race.
The film confirmed what I believe about people who hold racist views. It is now clear that people who are racist are a coward and are ignorant and I always believed that.
After one of the verdicts, the victorious prosecutor observes that race relations have come a long way: “There was a time when cops ignored facts,” he said. What is the history of blacks in the justice system in your community? Has justice in your community “come a long way”? Can you think of any specific examples?I think that it has came along way and I think blacks are equally treated 90% of the time but there is still that stigma I guess if that’s how i word it. In the film, we see people coming together in worship. What role do the religious institutions in your community play in either bringing people together or keeping them divided? If you are affiliated with a religious institution, what role do you think it plays? What can you do to shape that role? I think it does not divide people and it really doesn’t bring to many people together either. I am affiliated but I don’t go to church. It does not play a role in my life as much as others. I cut slack a little bit but never in a situation that is violent,.. hate them!. I know a lot of people who are different then me I don’t feel as though its hard I know a lot of black people and puerto Ricans my best friend is Rican and a lot of my good friends are black my boy best friend is black and my boyfriend is so many things half African American Creole French Spanish german but mostly black. Its not hard you just hve to be open minded. Feel me? Yes but I don’t need to spend time with dififerent people because in gods eyes were all the same!.
I think justice in America has generally come a long way. There was a time when cops, courts, and the government would ignore hate crimes because the cops them selves were just as corrupt.I think our nation still has a lot of work to do, but I do think we have came a long way.
I don't think that religion plays a big part in our community. Yeah when something big and tradgic happens it's only human for people to come together and pray for better, but I don't think that on an average day or week that religion plays a big part.
I don't think I would be able to be more easy on someone i knew or some one who lived in my neighborhood. i think i would be ashamed to know that someone i know did something like that. i would want the punishment to fit the crime.
What happens when people are judged by the way they look? When people are judged by the way they look, the person judging gets a false impression and should base opinions on the person till they start to know them.“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”- Martin Luther King, Jr. What is prejudice? List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others.Prejudice is a judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge of the facts. An example is say I walk into a store with some of my black friends, the same time a group of white people walk in, the sales person working starts to follow me and my friends around because she THINKS we are going to steal. That’s prejudice and makes her stereotypical because not all black people steal and a white person can steal too. What are some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people? An example of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment is when cops pull over every black male they see. Why do you think some people are prejudiced?I think that some people are prejudiced because they might have had a past experience with a type of person and then from there on in they just judge every person that remind them of that one person. For example say in 6th grade you got bullied by a black person day in and day out and you really didn’t talk to black people that much, then when you go around them your prob going to think ooh I don’t want to talk to him cause he is going to be mean and an angry person to me.
What is tolerance? List examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others.Tolerance is all about having respect because you could not like someone but still have tolerance/respect from them.An example of how people practice tolerance is that sales person keeping an equal eye on everyone who walks in that store. What do people gain or lose from respecting or not respecting others’ diversity?People gain knowledge, friends and when two people have respect for each other it makes them feel better because you’re like ok I can go to this person about an issue without him/her judging me in a certain way. What can people do to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons?First it should start with the kids and there should be a positive conversation about respecting others. Also if someone sees or hears someone being intolerant then that person should stand up and say something. Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice?Yes, this film does deepen my understanding of racism and prejudice. How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views? The movie confirms what I believe on how the white people hold racist views…but I’m not going to lie I do hold some racist views too but I’m not like ooh I’m going to kill someone because of it.

I agree with you. I think that if someone I knew did something like that my opinion of them would change and I would want them to be punished.
In this story, I think what should be done is for the man that didn't die to sit with james byrd's daughter and family. i don't know what can be done and i don't know what will be done either.
In New Bedford, there are many gathering places and they are, for the most part, integrated. One example is the Dartmouth Mall.Friday and Saturday nights are the times that most young teens go to the mall (in packs). Most of the groups are integrated, but there is an occasional segregated group.I don’t think they are purposely segregated. But for the most part the mall has integrated groups.Another example is the school itself. The environment is integrated but most of the groups (at least I’ve noticed) are very much segregated.I noticed a lot of racism too.Just listening to what is around me, it’s kind of sick to hear what some people say.I also find it kind of sad that in such a diverse community that a lot of people segregate themselves and regularly make racist remarks. Personally, I think everyone in this community should be able to gather around together comfortably, but I don’t really see it happening yet.I think if some people want to segregate themselves, then it’s fine; as long as they aren’t forced into it or they aren’t forcing others out.We definitely have a lot of work to do before we are completely integrated. I have been around people who are different from myself forever.Cultural, religious, sexual differences etc are something that should be embraced by people instead of feared.I feel the only reason why people are racist or prejudiced is because they are afraid of being unique. I have all of my knowledge and understanding of different people from life in general.Just being around different people all the time and befriending different people showed me things I didn’t understand.
You live with it.” — Walter Diggles
i think that the insident dramatically changed the town. i think they alll figured out how much it really effects each other.
In Jasper, the fence dividing the town cemetery into black and white sections symbolized divisions in the community at large. Do similar symbols exist in your community? Would it make a difference to dismantle them? If so, how might you begin that process? i personally havent seen anything that divides black and whites from our community.
Are the attitudes of people in the film similar to attitudes in your own community? If so, would viewers of this film therefore come away knowing more about you and your community? Is there any way in which viewers might be misled about you or your community?

Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice? yes very much.. its showsme how whites AND Blacks can BOTH be racial to each other but if they both just stopped and realized it.. they cvould get along.
How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views?
i'm feelin the way you answered them questions ashley, i agree witchu to the fullest.
1. When people are judged by the way they look, it causes problems sometimes people dont take the caze to even get to know them. They just automatally asume that they are the way that they think. Although in most cases thats not true at all. 2. Prejuice is something that can never stop. We can not change the way people think especially if they are prejudice against someone of color or someone who is not the same nationality as them. But it has changes alot i think prejudice is when someone is not even given the case to get to know and is just judge on your skin or the way you look it could be skin, religion, or nationality. 3.I think sometimes prejudice cause different sentences for people depending if your white or black you can different consequence or someone likes you better because your a certain color or they trust you more . These are all cause of prejudice.
4.I think some people are prejudice because that was the way they were brought up and they dont open there eys, or because they only WANT to like the ones like them and dont want to get to know other people. That is very unfair because no one should be judged on what you look like on the outside. THATS not who they are in the inside. 5.I think tolerance is how much so one can put up with, how much the blacks could put up with slavery and being treated bad, how much a religion can put up with before they blow up. This is what i think tolerance is because everyone has a point where they cant put up with no more. 6.I think that people gain by prenticing other diversity because sometimes if you do something right it dosent always turn out to be the right thing. Although at times diversity brings us all together in one way or other if you respect it they will respect you and that cause less problems and with the less problems the more people get along the better our community is. 7.I think the united states would gain more unity if we all respected each others diversity and at LEAST tryed to understand each other NOt necessary agree with it but respect it and just leave it alone. 8.I think that when people practice intolerance it could cause more conflict to the united states. 9.I think if everyone respected one other and actually treid to reason with someone else and got to know what the other person likes we would have less problems i think if everyone would just respect each other you dont have to like it but at least just respect it i think that the united stated would have a better environment we would be strong as one . Instead of all of us separtring and going agaist one other. 10.Yes i think this flim does depen my ideas of prejudice because it shows me how rude and mean people can be against someone who they dont know but say they dont like. 11. This truly shows me that it doesn’t matter who you are we all have feelings and we all
Group#1:
The demographics of my community are alot of different diverstiys from whites to african americans to asias. I think here in New Bedford we have a little bit of everything. I think we are like jasper in one way because we do have prejuice here and alot of people do intend to jude other people without even knowing them, this is what i think we are alike with jasper. Although we differ because most of us understand each other and try to get along not all of us but most of us. I dont think any one in New bedford would have the courage to chain a man to a car and drag him.I think the forms od racism that is presented in my community right now is alot of african americans tend to blam the white people of this generation for slavery. Athough I am going to be completely honest some white people could care less about slavery but then there are the ones who cared about what happened and dont agree with it . I aslo think that many white people still continue to treat african american different . If that will completely ever change I dont think so although i think that we can came along way and that we get along better now. I dont think that everyone can completely understand that we are all the same and no matter what we look like on the outside we are all human beings and we all have feelings that matter. I think that alot of forms of racism have change alot over time being with i think that now african america are treated 100 times better and that they have the same opportunities as other s , from slavery to where we are today yes it has changed a whole lot. I think whites and african americans have found a better understand of finding each other. I dont think any actions that I will take will help to change because i am one little person with one opinion i dont think i could change much. But i could voice my opinion and try to make a difference and try to change things and make it for the better it does not hurt to try. I could raise a group that feels the same like i do and maybe us together could make a difference. well they ever vanish i dont think so but well people opinion change possibly.
NO in my community we are not divinde by our color , we live where we want to live . I do feel that depending on your money is where you live you have alot of money you live somewhere nice you dont have so much money you dont live in such a nice neighborhood. But we are not separted by blacks and whites. yes it would make a difference to dismantle them because i think everyone is equal and just because of you skin color i dont think we should be caterogized . I have learned that my community was never like Jasper completly but in one way we were we did use to have bathrrom for whites and for black. But that has all changed it make us all feel like we have the same right and thats how it should be. In jasper the blacks and the whites were buried separately because of there color thats not right at all . SO yes I do believe that dismattle things would make things right.
I think the biggest hate crime we have in our community is that no AFFENCE I think that African American hold us American to responsible for what happened many years ago. It is not our fault I know for sure that many white people where against slavery so I do not think they should hold us against for it. Also it hurts us where we are called (WHITE GIRL) that hurts us to to be called names just as they get mad we have feelings to.
Part III: Social Activism It's really simple... What od you think should be done about the issues raised in this story? What can be done? What will be done? What do you want to do as a class, as a school as a member of your community to 'be the change you want to see in the world'? Write your answer for [80 points] and respond, comment or offer a suggestion to another student's post [20 points].
honestly.... i think what should be done is that just like most people in the world take MCAS or some type of test,., i think they should do a survey to MOST people and they should try to ask then questions about racist. and what not honestly i dont no what to doo.. and rankly i dont want to do anything about it its there own oppinion/
PART 2: I do in fact think that these trials really changed the way people thought and acted in Jasper. It is obviously a true fact that there is racism everywhere, but it seemed that in this town it was done in a way where it somewhat showed that the white people didn’t care about what they said or how they acted.People are brought up different ways, thinking different ways. There was a part in the movie where there is a white family that is sitting around the table and talking that when they were younger they always used to use the “n” word to point out a person of color. They continued talking and saying that apparently now in days it was very rude and insulting to the people of color and couldn’t really stop the habit of using the word.So that right there shows that no one can change what a person thinks or how they were brought up thinking of certain things. But I do think that by making these trials public the people of Jasper were able to see a different side of it and see that this man was innocent and didn’t deserve to die.I honestly think that the white people of that town changed and maybe they even thought a little more before they said certain comments.I do think that there are symbols that exist in our community now in days. They aren’t in a way that is so visible to the eyes but they are definitely there.I think there are those kinds of divisions when it comes to living in projects. I’ve personally heard white people who say that they refuse to live in areas where there are projects because they don’t want to be exposed to dangerous environments. That’s stereotypical and a way of dividing those that live in projects with those that in their eyes are much better off.I don’t think that dismantling that way of thinking would really do anything to change how people think or act.It is obvious that people that think that way were in a way influenced to think in that way and I think that it takes a lot more than taking those barriers out to get to the bottom of it.It’s a personal thing that depends on the community and how they choose to live and change to better accommodate both sides. The attitudes of this community can compare to the attitudes of many communities. Many communities have these kinds of attitudes throughout the community because of ways that they were brought up thinking.I honestly think that other people that are from different countries get intimidated because of these kinds of things.I do think that people who finish watching the movie will come out seeing that their communities can somewhat compare to the community that was portrayed in the movie.
What happens when people are judged by the way they look? People start to argue and fight with each other and people who judges others teach there kid to judge to so the comments never stop.
What is prejudice?List examples of how prejudice causes some people to stereotype others. Prejudice is a way of life that some people live its hatred and violence to others most of the ones that are not there kind. They mostley judge others by the way that they talk there skin color the way that they dress and religine
What are some examples of prejudice resulting in unfair treatment of people? Different restrooms or different restaurants different looksand also different punishments
Why do you think some people are prejudiced? Its mostly on how they were raised they were brought up on hatred and thats all they know of so there going to grow up to hate what they were raised to hate.
What is tolerance?List examples of how people practice tolerance or respect towards others. Tolerance is being able to walk away from something with out saying anything to the other person. walk away from people who are saying stuff respect them know matter how they are treating you and always talk back with a good tone.
What do people gain or lose from respecting or not respecting others’ diversity? People gain stranght and power and knowlegde when they do not respect others they dont gain anything but knowing that the other person won.
What do you think the United States and the world gain or lose from respecting or not respecting diversity? The world gains more peace and less wars and hatred and even crimes.
What are some things that can happen when people practice intolerance over a long period of time? there would be more hatred and prejudice people and the world woulnt last that way because we would have more wars then ever.
What can people do to help create an environment that encourages respect for all persons? help each other and respect each other and there opinion and learn more about prejudice so it can stop, so people know its bad
Does this film deepen your understanding of racism or prejudice? Yes because now i know how other people are and how it is wrong to do or say what they say
How does it contradict or confirm what you believe about people who hold racist views? it confirmed them because they were wrong on what they did
When people are judged by the way they look their self- esteem goes down causing them to feel depressed and lose motivation to do something.
Prejudice is discriminating someone for something they cannot control. Anexample is how people treat someone based on someone else.
Weight, class, gender, race.
Tolerance is showing respect towards someone. They practice on themselves to learn tolerance.

They gain or lose trust within each other.
When people practice intolerance for so long they then can’t control what they say or do to people.

Yes
Those who hold racist views should be forced to live with just that race for a week.
i'm not feelin your definition for tolerance, no worries though, i'll buy you a dictionary. Also, you said that if someone had a problem with a certain race they should be forced to live with that person for a week, which i cannot agree with you there since it could lead to violence or even someone's death.
Michael Depina wrote: Questions 1.When people are judged by the way they look, they may feel not good enough, not loved, sad and angry.
I like your definition for tolerance. It is a coincidence though how its the same definition as the one i saw in google. I think Mr.E wants it in your own words. Ill buy you a thesaurus so you can put words down that u actually understand.
The insights that the film provides to the people whose exploration of racism goes beyond relations of blacks and whites is that It doesn’t really go beyond because back then if you weren’t white you were considered black despite your ethnicity. So it stays at white and black.
The significance of the title is that there separated as to towns. it is very segregated such as two different sides of a cemetery .I think that the two sides are against each other in such away that if one side is innocent the other will find every excuse or reason to find them guilty. Like when the 3 white men killed Byrd, they family received a letter stating that its unlikely for a white man to commit murder. That its mostly black men. Such as the Berry family ,even though they knew sean was guilty they didn’t think he deserved the same punishment as the other two men because you think differently when its your own family on trail.
Part III: Social ActivismWhat I think should be done about the issues in this story, is realize that racism and prejudice don’t help anything. There should be a day of remembrance of James Byrd.I also think that the man who only received life in prison, should also have to remember James Byrd.Maybe by having to walk through the same road that James Byrd was dragged down.It definitely wouldn’t change anything, but I think it would somehow give the Byrd family some sense of revenge just knowing that he has no choice to think about the death of James Byrd.As for what WILL be done, I know that the town of Jasper has grown stronger since then.If that happened here, I think some people would find it to be a rude awakening. We definitely need to all get together and prevent any tragedies like this from ever happening. In order to ‘be the change I want to see in the world’, I would just keep doing what I’m doing now; talking about racism and prejudice and start to get others talking and realizing that times have changed. We are more of an integrated country now, and some people need to open up their eyes and minds to that fact.
I agree with everything you said. You had the same idea as i did when i was answering the questions. I also think that people are influenced because of how they were brought up and how they were raised to think certain things. Good job!!

i don't appreaciate you acusing me of stealing definition from google when that is entirely untrue, i'm requesting an apology from you. I did give Mr. E the definition in my own words.
