On Friday, we watched a video that contained three main parts.  The first showed teens discussing issues of race, prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination and social activism.  The second part rebroadcast a CBS news segment on the Jasper, Texas hate crime involving the murder of James Byrd, Jr.  Finally, the third part involved an interview with a former white racist Skinhead named Eric.  Answer the questions below [80 points] in your own words.  Use as much detail as necessary to fully explain yourself.  Respond to another student’s post with a comment, question or suggestion as well [20 points].

1st Scene:
(Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?  How did it come about?  How did it change you?

2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each.

3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?

4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?

5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?

6th Scene:
(Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?

7th Scene:
(Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why not?  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not?

8th Scene:
(White Racist Teen) Question:  Do you believe that there is any hope for Eric?  Explain.  What would you do to help him if he was your friend or family member?  In terms of a community or society, what can be done to reduce the number of young people who join these types of hate groups?  What can be done to reduce their (hate groups) power in a community?

1st Scene: (Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?  How did it come about?  How did it change you?
I learned about my own cultural identity when i was pretty young, about 6 or 7 maybe.  I found that I am many different things; mostly Irish and Italian, but also Scottish, Welsh, Swedish, and Blackfoot Indian.  It came about when I had to find out what different nationalities I was for a school project.  I didn't realize what any of it meant until I was about 14 or 15.  Just realizing "Hey, I'm part Native American" that was really amazing.  Especially how they are a minority.  The Native American is from my dad's side.  It turns out the my Great Great Grandmother was 100% Blackfoot.  It made me wonder what had happened to the tribe.  And it also makes me very proud, even though im not 100% Native American.
2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each.
My reasons for not using racial slurs are
1- i dont want to offend anyone, 2- i respect everyone's differences, and 3-i feel like an ignorant person. The third is my biggest reason though.  I dont use racial slurs.. ever. It makes me feel like if i did say them, I would be ignorant.

3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?
My family has had discussions like this one.  We all have our different views on it though.  I personally would like immigration to be legal in the sense that everyone should be able to live in America.  But i also feel that it will  have to be illegal no matter what.  We dont have enough jobs to support everyone that wants to come into the country.
4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?
It's really hard to say whether or not if Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privelege.  I think it depends on who you talk to.  Older white people would say that there is still a benefit.  I think that its pretty much judged on an idividual basis now.
My opinion on the shoplifting analogy, I think shoplifters are judged by either their income (or lack there of), their greed, or their giving into temptation.  I dont see it as a black/white subject at all.

5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?
Cultural/Ethnic stereotypes aren't justified.  You don't have to believe the stereotypes if you don't want to.  The stereotypes come from people trying to classify cultures into groups.  Mostly back in the old days.  They really have such a strong impact on people.  Everyone has had a stereotype placed on them.  Me, personally, people have assumed that I'm gothic, because i listen to rock music.  I mean, it's not really a bad stereotype compared to others but it's still a stereotype.  People shouldnt have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society because we are all unique. We all come from different backgrounds and i dont think anyone should HAVE to choose. ...... It's a choice!!!
6th Scene:
(Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?
Having a bigot in a family isnt easy at all.  I do have a bigot in my family and i pretty much disagree with everything this person says.  Every time they say something even remotely racist i start to get really angry. and i tell them to keep their closed-minded opinions to themselves.
7th Scene:
(Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why not?  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not?
I dont think that all people HAVE to do something about racism, I think they SHOULD.  forcing people to do something about racism will just make them not want to.  I think we just need to influence more people positively.
I dont think there is much hope for Eric, he said in the film that he has gone through periods where he goes back into the gangs.  There really isnt much to do for Eric, even if he was a family member or a friend.  I think exposing kids at an early age to different cultures and teaching them to respect people, no matter what they look like or what ethnicity they are.  If everyone stands up against the hate groups, then maybe they wouldn't be around. Or at least they wouldn't make their presence known.

1st Scene: (Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?
Recently.. i still don't know exactly, which is kinda sad.

How did it come about?
I was curious about my background.

How did it change you?

It didn't

2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each.
I was never brought up that way. I was taught with respect. I don't look at people like that.   I think its disrespectful to be racist and its ignorant. I have more respect. It's not nice.

3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?
Yes, we talk about different aspects of life and whats going on in our society.

How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?

i think it should be legal for immigrants to come to America if their just trying to work and make a life in our society.

4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?

yes, whites benefited from a system of racism. They get away with more stuff then black people.

What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?

People shouldnt shoplift. I think its wrong.

5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?

No

Where do they come from?

Different cultures

What impact can they have?

different opinions of race

Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?

No, people should learn to acfcept all types of races in society.

6th Scene:
(Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?

I would tell them that its racist to think like that, and i would probably flip out on them, because that isn't right.

7th Scene:
(Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why
not?Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not?

No they should, but not everyone is going to listen. It only applies to some people who stick up for themselves, like me.

Yes, i would stick up for him and try to teach him a few things. To eliminate hate groupsi people could try to talk things out instead of jumping to conclusions. To reduce this they could start a positive group with people that have good attitudes and over power the hate group.

Well growing up I always Knew about my culture but as i got older i became oto become more familiar . I always thought that everyone was the same . I never though how many differet families are here and how we all live different. I would have to say that when i was about in maybe 6 th grade was when i really wanted to learn more about my culture and when i became familar about african american how they were treated and what the slaves went threw. I came to learn about my cukture because I wanted o know more more where my mother came from and where my dad came from. After visiting portugal I also learned alot more about my culture.
I dont think it changed me i just think i knew more about my background and where my parents came from.
well i was brought up not using racial slurbs my family belives that we are all human with all the same rights and what we look like on the outside dosent define you in the inside.
Usally my family have discussions during dinner we talk about our day and whats going on in life. My mother wants me o make a difference she wants me to follow my dreams and have no one bring me down. I know many people belive i will not be what i want to be. Although i know if i follow my dreams i can make it anywhere and what i want to be i know one day ill be famouse. Dreams do come true.

I think if illegal people here are just trying to make a difference i dont see why people come in and take them away they are not crinmials they just want a better life for them and there family. They want to be able to live in the land of the free and be able to actually have something.

In one way or other i do think that whites do get away with alot of stuff although it has changed and things are working out for the better.
Shoplifting O M G i think almost every teenager dose it how they get away with it i dont know but i want to learn JP i think that. Thats why we work so we can work for are things and know that you worked hard to have somthing. To buy things you want . You can always get away with shoplifting.

No i dont think that ethnic or sterotypr are justified, I think everyone should just get along with everyone because we are all human beings and all have the same rights. I dont think just because what you look like on the outside should justify you in the inside.

I think that alot of people should do something about racism i think that racism is not right and that NO ONE SHOULD be held against something because of your hertiage. It does not only apply to those who feel like they are being treated different but poeple who notice this.

Yes i would try to help him make him look at it in a different point of viwe and not to judge any one

1st scene-I was curious and I asked my parents about our background. It didn't really change me, the only thing that changed was the fact that I knew.

2nd scene-*I don't do things/say things to people that I wouldn't want said to me. *It's ignorant. Calling people racial slurs shows that you're narrow-minded and all you see is race. *It's just not right.

3rd scene-Yes I have had conversations like this in my family. There's nothing wrong with people wanting to come to America to have a better life. But people need the proper documentation to be legal citizens. It's a rough time for this country-Americans are going poor because of this war. Americans are falling apart-so immigration shouldn't be a top priority.

4th scene- Do Americans still benefit from a system of racism? I think it depends on the age/generation of the person. I don't believe in the shop-lifting analogy but I know some people do. Just because 1 black person has stole something doesn't mean I'm going to look at the whole black race and say, everyone whose black steals.

5th scene-I don't think racial stereotypes are justified. If you form an opinion of someone based on stereotypes you're not giving them a fair chance. Thinking in stereotypes is what causes people to not be cultural diverse.

6th scene-Everyone is entilted to their own opinions. But I'm not the type of person who just listens and says nothing. You cant change peoples opinions-especially if it's an older person because they've thought a certain way for so long-but things have changed and you cant expect to be respected if you dont respect other people.

7th scene-No, I don't think everyone has to do something about racism. What can be done? How do you change somebody. I think, the best thing that can be done, is to just raise your children some day with the right views. Because a child is taught everything, and if they're around children of different races, and they're taught positive things-the world will have one less racist person.

8th scene-No, I don't believe there is any hope for Eric. He's been stuck in that lifestyle for too long. If he was my family member I'd probably give up on helping him-as mean as that may sound. You can't help someone who doesn't want to change. How is someone like that going to go back into society as a productive person when he's been hateful most of his life? To make sure younger children don't get involved in these kind of groups-don't let your children hang around people like that. Obviously, parents don't know everything that goes on around their children daily-but just make sure theres no problems like that. I don't know..it's so hard to figure out what to do. Because if we all had answers, none of this would be going on right now anyway.

1st Scene: (Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity? How did it come about? How did it change you?
I think that the first time I really learned about my own cultural identity was in the 8th grade. We had to do a project on our family history and when and from where our family came to America. I knew very little about my family at the time and learning this about them gave me a lot more respect for them.

2nd Scene: (Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs? Brainstorm a list and explain each.

It hurts and offends others, it is ignorant to judge based on race, it is wrong and pointless to focus on race in this way, you can lose friends.

3rd Scene: (Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this? How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?

My family does sometimes talk about issues that are going on by my family is not as close minded as some of the people in that family were. I think that immigration helps add to the diversity of the country by bringing more cultures together. I think, however, we need to be more strict with illegal immigration since if a person is here illegally it can hurt them because they are not protected by American laws and it could be easier for employers to take advantage of them.

4th Scene: (Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today? What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy? Do you agree or not? Why?

I’m not completely sure about whether or not white Americans still benefit from racism. There are probably still instances of one race having more privilege than another in some places but I don’t look at things in that way and I don’t usually see that. I personally don’t agree with the shoplifting analogy, I don’t automatically assume all black people steal just because one did. There are still people who think things like this though.

5th Scene: (Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified? Where do they come from? What impact can they have? Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society? Why or why not?

No, cultural or ethnic stereotypes are never justified because there is no way that one particular characteristic can be common to everyone in a certain group of people. They come from people who are narrow minded and assume things about people based on their own prejudice rather than getting to know anyone. They can really hurt the people that they are said against, also the people who believe these stereotypes can pass them on to their children, who may continue this ignorance. I don’t think a person should ever have to choose just one race or ethnicity if they do not want to because our society has so many different cultures that are mixed together so they can mix and be a part of all of their cultures, rather than choosing one.

6th Scene: (Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?

If there were a bigot in my family, I think it would be incredibly frustrating to listen to them. I think I would have to say something to them whenever they made a racist comment to let them know that I do not agree with them.

7th Scene: (Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism? Why or why not? Or do you believe it only applies to some people? Why or why not?

I think that it is important and it would help if all people got involved in working against racism. It does affect society, which means it will in turn affect everyone in society so I think everyone should work on these problems not just some people.

8th Scene: (White Racist Teen) Question: Do you believe that there is any hope for Eric? Explain. What would you do to help him if he was your friend or family member? In terms of a community or society, what can be done to reduce the number of young people who join these types of hate groups? What can be done to reduce their (hate groups) power in a community?

I think that Eric can change, I don’t think it’s completely impossible. Eric seems like he really wants to change his life for the better, but he did say that it is hard to get away from groups like that. He has, however, seen what being in groups like these has done to him and they have gotten him into jail multiple times. I would try to get him away from their influence. It might be easier for him to start a new life if he is away from the groups that hurt his past. I think more should be done for the youth that feel the way Eric felt, alone and different from everyone else. If there were more programs that could get kids interested and involved in their community maybe they would not join these hate groups. Programs that raise awareness on these groups and the negative affect they have on society could reduce their power, if more people knew about how big of a problem this is becoming.

I agree with you, I think your reasons for not using racial slurs were good and I agree with you that it is important to teach kids at a young age about different ethnicities so they will grow up respecting others.

1st Scene: (Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?  How did it come about?  How did it change you?
I always knew that I was portuguese and scottish and stuff and it didn't really change me at all.  I'm still the same person and it didn't really change me at all...

2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each.
I can't think of ALOT of reason but I can think of some that are important.
People are all equal, so don't make fun of someone because of their ethnic background.
People take offense, and I'm pretty sure you woudn't appreciate someone making fun of you for something you can't control.

3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?
Yeah, my Dad tells me all the time that people come here illegally and get jobs under the table so that there aren't as many jobs for the rest of us and they should leave the country.  I kind of feel the same way, but people that come here just want a better life, so why try to stop them?

4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?
I don't really know, honestly, I think that it is probably the african americans that benefit because of the racism there was BEFORE.  I think now that everyone is equal they still feel like they deserve something because of how they were treated before so they have special scholarships and other things that if white americans had them it would be racist.  I think that that shoplifting analogy is wrong because everyone can shoplift.

5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?
I think that some are and some aren't. I mean my friend Sok is cambodian and his parents are strict like the stereotypcial asian parents would be, and that's not really putting anyone down or anything.  But stereotyping certain groups with being thieves isn't really right.  I think that they probably have a negative impact.  I don't think that people HAVE TO choose a race or ethnicity because if you don't know your ethnicity to begin with how can you choose one.

6th Scene:
(Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?
If their was a biggot in my family I would tell them to shut up and don't talk about people in a degrading way.

7th Scene:
(Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why not?  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not?
I do believe that people have to do something about racism because it isn't right to pick out a certain group and hate against them for no reason.  It's just not right. If you take everyone apart it's all the same things inside so why hate on a certain people.

I do believe that there may be hope for Eric.  If he moves away and isn't contacted by his group thingy then they can't do anything and he won't be able to participate in bad activiites.  I would smack him and tell him to stop doing that if he was my friend or family member.  Be more informative in school about what happens when you join a gang. Make a law against having a hate group and try to enforce it more.

1st Scene: Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?  How did it come about?  How did it change you? I never knew my culture I always thought there were only black, white, Asian, and Mexican. Now I moved here I see all these different cultures and im apart of it too.

2nd Scene: (Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each. I can think of a lot of reasons to not use racial slurs like we are equal and it hurts the persons feelings if you’re using racism against them.

3rd Scene: Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?  No my family doesn’t have conversations like this, but I have views on this I think immigration should be legal and if they want to come here for a better life let them.

4th Scene: (Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?
Yes, I agree white Americans still benefit from a system of racism. If you look at the good jobs they are more likely to hire a white guy that a black guy or a white woman quicker than the black women. Because of stereo types.

5th Scene: Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?
I think culture and ethnics stereotypes are not justified. They were made up by ignorant people and sometimes it may be the truth its still wrong they can still hurt people no one should have to choose their race in our societs.
6th Scene: Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?
I would love them the same but I would tell them they have to stop being racist.

7th Scene: Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why not?  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not?
I think all people have to do something about racism because if a large percentage is not agreeing with the right thing to do then it wont get done.
8th Scene:  Question:  Do you believe that there is any hope for Eric?

I always knew about my culture `my family is really into the culture thing so i was brought up knowing were i came from. It didnt come about as a shocker or anything because i am use to my culture and been to were my family came from. It did change me at all because i am glad from were i came from so im still the same person that i was born to be.

2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each.
Well the racial comment should not be used because of its back round and it does affend some people and bring back the memories from the day. Its hurtful and its rude and its selfesh because it doesnt offend you but we have to think about other people and there feelings and what they went through to try to get over the hurtful words.

3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?
Yes my mom worked with immigrants and she told me there story on how they got here and it was hard for them to get all the way here my parents are legal but if my mom didnt take the test and stuff she would of been just like them because she came from portugal and her friends are illegal so we talk about it alot and how its effecting use ya they take a lot of are jobs but if you think about it there doing the dirty jobs that we dont want to do all the hard working jobs they do it for use and they dont get payed like we do they get payed less for all the hard work they do.

4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?
In some places whites do benefit from a system of racism but it is better now then it was back then so hopefully as the years go by all the racism goes away. I think that that shoplifting analogy is wrong because everyone can and a lot of people do shoplift.

5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?
Sometimes it is and sometimes its not. They can come from any race and people from that race. They can have great impact on there race from what they believe in. They dont have to chose anything everyone has there own impact in there beliefs so i think that people can and shoule chose there own ethnicity but they cant change there race because that is were your from and that is what you need to believe in is you race.

6th Scene:
(Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?
If their was a biggot in my family I would tell them to stop talking about people in that way because they wouldnt like it if they were treated that way its  wrong and they shouldnt talk about that around me or even talk about it at all.

7th Scene:
(Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why not?  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not?
I strongly agree with people helping to stop racism they need to because there are so many micture of people out there and there are more to come to more people need to speak up and help with the no racism. I think it should impley to everyone because racism is wrong and hurt ful.

I do believe that there may be hope for Eric.  But it would be hard to live a regulare life because you never know who is out there to get you and they may get you sooner or later thats why you shouldnt get into gangs or groups because of the out come. I would help as much as i can if i still had time to.

Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity? How did it come about? How did it change you?

I knew i was portugese for a long timee for basically my whole life so it didnt change me much.

Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs? Brainstorm a list and explain each.

i cant think of that many reasons but i can think of some. One reason is because people should be treated the way they want to be treated and i dont think anyone wants to  be called names. Also because everybody is equal.Another reason is  because it hurts peoples feelings

Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?

Yes, we've had conversations about illegal people coming in but  it wasnt a big discussion.I think those people are just coming in to have a better life but they should do it the right way.

Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?

I do believe white americans still benefit from the system of racism or provililedge today.I thin kthe shoppliffting analogy is wrong.

Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?

I do not think that they are justified.I dont think that people should have to choose cause everyone comes from a different place and people should just have to deal with it .

How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?
If there was a bigot in my family i woduldnt listen to him or her and tell them not to say those things around me

Do you believe that there is any hope for Eric?  Explain.  What would you do to help him if he was your friend or family member?  In terms of a community or society, what can be done to reduce the number of young people who join these types of hate groups?  What can be done to reduce their (hate groups) power in a community?

I believe there is hope for eric but then again he went back to doing the same things over and over again so who knows. If he was my friend or family member id try to get them not to be around those people and move him to a better community. To reduce the number of people who join the hate groups you'd have to get rid of them first!

1st Scene: (Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?  How did it come about?  How did it change you?
1st scene: I first learned about my own cultural identity when I was about 5 years old. It came about when I moved here to New Bedford and attended to my first bilingual class. Before this, I had always been around other Asian children since I had lived in a mostly Asian community. My parents had then taught me about my own culture and the background of our family since I was new to this diverse community. It changed me in that I now know more about where I live and the cultures that make up this place.
2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each.
2nd scene: Reasons for not using racial slurs are that it might offend people of that particular race, it’s unfair and cruel to that race, and racial slurs degrade others and just make that person that’s using them seem like a complete bastard.
3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?
3rd scene: Sometimes the conversations that my family have somewhat lean towards to what the Italian family were discussing about reasons why they came and towards how they should act towards other people of this country. I have no opinion on the issue of illegal immigration. Legal immigration is fine to me because they’re coming here by doing what is necessary and following the law. Although the issue of illegal immigration is talked about quite a bit, the fact that morals come into play on this issue makes it a hard thing to decide upon.
4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why?
4th scene: I think that white Americans don’t benefit as much as they did back then from a system of racism today. There are still racists today that might abuse their powers and do what they can to only help white Americans. My opinion on the shoplifting analogy is that it’s quite untrue because being part of one race doesn’t subject them to the actions of others in that same race.
5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?
5th scene: Cultural and ethnic stereotypes aren’t justified because most stereotypes occur due to maybe just a select few people that are true to this stereotype and so people assume that all the people of that particular race are true to that stereotype. The impact that stereotypes have on people is that if it is a bad stereotype then that particular race would be thought of as bad people and vice versa. A person should not have to choose a race because they are who they are. Being part of certain races does not mean you have to just choose your race to describe yourself in society today.
6th Scene:
(Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?
6th scene: I think I would probably just ignore the fact that they’re a bigot only because I know I wouldn’t be able to change their minds about what they’re thinking. Although it is wrong, no one can place a ban on thinking so nothing would convince them of their opinions otherwise.
7th Scene:
(Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why not?  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not?
7th scene: I believe that people SHOULD do something about it but I know that it’s not possible because there’s going to be at least one racist person who will refuse to do anything about it. This does indeed apply to only some people. The ones that this applies to are the ones who want to do something about racism and such.
8th Scene:
(White Racist Teen) Question:  Do you believe that there is any hope for Eric?  Explain.  What would you do to help him if he was your friend or family member?  In terms of a community or society, what can be done to reduce the number of young people who join these types of hate groups?  What can be done to reduce their (hate groups) power in a community?8th scene: No, I don’t think there is any hope for Eric. No one can ever help others who are racist because the only ones who can help them are themselves. If they want to change, only they themselves can help them. I would try to convince him as much as I can if I was his friend or family member. Even though it might not help, it is still worth a try I suppose. In terms of a society, many things can be done to keep the number of teens who join hate groups significantly low. Events could be held to celebrate other cultures so that others can learn more about different cultures and expand their knowledge. By doing this, this may help to reduce the power of hate groups if everyone can participate and realize how wonderful diversity is.

I can't think of ALOT of reason but I can think of some that are important.
People are all equal, so don't make fun of someone because of their ethnic background.
People take offense, and I'm pretty sure you woudn't appreciate someone making fun of you for something you can't control.

I agree with you that people shouldn't judge others based on their ethnicity. Also, I don't think you would be helping that Eric guy too much if you smacked him. :P I think your idea of him moving away is a good idea because he can't do anything if no one is around to instill their evil ways around him.

Are you glad that you learned about other cultures do you see people differently now or do you see them like you would see your friends and family.

1st Scene: (Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?  How did it come about?  How did it change you?Answer: I first learned about my culture when I was old enough to understand, I was 7, my parents told me that I was Portuguese so I followed the Portuguese traditions and rituals. I ate the Portuguese food. I celebrated the Portuguese feasts and celebrations. I don’t think that I changed me because it just comes normal on what I do.

2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each. Answer: I think that racial slurs are not needed because if you do not know what it means and the history of the words than why would you say it. They are not needed and you should not say it either.

3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)? Answer: My family does not think that it is an important matter to be discussed about because; if they do not say it then it has nothing to do with them. I think that illegal immigration is not right because if you do not belong here then you shouldn’t be here. I understand that people come here for a better living, but how can that happen if these raids continue to happen. They come here to have a better life but they just get it worse. Legal immigration is when you came from a different country and turn into a U.S. citizen. How can that happen when the citizenship test is getting harder and harder every time? How can they pass if people form the U.S. probably can’t pass it?

4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  What’s your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why? Answer: Yes, I think that today some white people think that their better than others. They do not get blamed for many crimes. I think that there are still places in the U.S. where the whites can only go to and not the black people. My opinion on the shoplifting analogy is that it is not right to blame a black person for shoplifting when he had nothing to do with it.

5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  Where do they come from?  What impact can they have?  Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?  Why or why not?Answer: No there not, people should not be stereotyped by their ethnic or cultural background; they should not be stereotyped at all. Many people come from different countries, Asia, Africa, Iraq etc. They can have many impacts, it just all depends on the actions that they end up taking, and the decisions that they make. A person should not have to choose a pace or ethnicity to follow, they should follow theirs and that’s it. I don’t think that its fair that they should be forced to like or dislike their own or others culture.

6th Scene:
(Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?Answer: I would not feel comfortable having a bigot in my family that does not respect the family’s cultures, and beliefs. I think that having a bigot in the family is embarrassing and should not be tolerated by any family.

7th Scene:
(Go tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?  Why or why not?  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  Why or why not? Answer: Yes I do, I think that they should because everybody should contribute to this problem that the world has. It does not only apply to some people but to everybody. I think that  people should not be judged about what they look like or what language they speak or what culture or beliefs they follow.

Answer: I think there is, if he straightens up and stops with his racial slurs and realizes what he is saying than I think that he can have hope for himself. He just needs to have respect for everybody, not just for him. I would tell him that he cannot be saying the things he does or he will be getting in a lot of trouble and I would try to calm him down when I see he is about to lose control. I don’t think that there is anything that can be done; its up to them what they want to be part of. I think the only thing that can be done is to make these teachings at school.

1st Scene: I don’t remember exactly when I found out about my cultural identity. I think throughout my childhood I’d discover a portion of my ethnicity that my parents hadn’t spoken of; or at least it seemed like that. As far as changing me, it did no such thing. I have to admit, it was pretty cool discovering something new, talking to my grandparents and unveiling what seemed like a secret identity. But my perception of other cultural groups never changed or altered. 2nd Scene: (1) I wouldn’t want to hurt or offend anyone (2) I wouldn’t want to make it seem like I condone the use of racial slurs (3) My family definitely wouldn’t think to highly of it. 3rd Scene: As far as I remember, my family hasn’t had a discussion quite like the one of the Italian family. Most immigrants, whether legal or illegal, just want an opportunity at the American dream. Again, most are hard-working, disciplined, and desperate. They deserve a shot at their dreams, like do all people. But the way in which they go about it is what rubs me the wrong way; obviously I’m mentioning the migration of illegal immigrants to American soil. A good deal of the problem rests on the shoulders of our own country. There are alternative methods to dealing with aliens, and our government owes it to those immigrants to tap into those schemes, and aid them in their pursuit of happiness. 4th Scene: White Americans still do benefit from racism today. There’s a reason why there’s only one black billionaire in the world today, and why minority children are constrained to impoverished, second grade schools. Segregation has restricted generations of blacks intellectuals from building wealth, and making something of themselves. The black community had been held captive in inferior school systems, being taught by hardly-qualified educators for years. 200 years ago what exactly kept the South running? Cotton is the answer, and cotton is what generations upon generations of black people have picked to make sure their racist owners generated a fortune, a fortune still eminent today.5th Scene: Stereotypes are not justified. Stereotypes can be used for different reasons, so identifying one place in which they originated is difficult. A case can be made that they are rooted in hate, another in a lack of self-confidence. No matter what the motive, the crux is that stereotypes don’t represent toleration or acceptance. They’re always a step in the wrong direction. A person should have some sense of pride in their nationality. Whether they’re full blood or five percent (calculating ethnic percentages is ridiculous). They shouldn’t have to choose one ethnicity to be recognized by if he or she’s makeup is heterogeneous.6th Scene: What can you do if there’s a bigot in your family? You can only go so far in educating this person, pointing out the faults in his logic, and helping him realize his intolerance. Regardless, this person is family and for better or worse you’re stuck with them. It’s a difficult circumstance, and one I hope not to deal with anytime soon.7th Scene: Everyone shouldn’t have to do something about racism. It’s not merely black and white; there are instances when it could be difficult taking a stand on a comment made by a friend or family member. Have to? No. But everyone has the duty to stand up for what’s right, for equality. Yes, it may very well be tough, but suck it up and do the right thing.8th Scene: There is hope for everyone in Eric’s dilemma; place your faith in the right hands and stick to your principles and you’ll be fine. Like any caring family member would, I’d lend a helping hand to Eric. Based on his true commitment to change, I would proceed by; (1) assisting him (2) acknowledging him. A strong, positive, family influence can prevent troubled kids from joining these groups.

1st Scene: (Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity? How did it come about? How did it change you?The first time I learned about my own culture was in 4th grade. I remember we had to get into 5 groups of 5 kids in each one and we had to do a project on our own culture. It was pretty cool. My group did about the different foods we have in Brazil and we also brought some samples in. I helped me learn more about my own culture and understand where it came from.

2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs? Brainstorm a list and explain each.
In my family we never use racial slurs towards anyone. In my house if we say something disrespectful or racial or anything thats not appropriate its trouble.
JThere are many reasons for one its very disrespectful towards others and its not an appropriate thing to say to anyone. People could take it very offensive.
3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this? How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)?
Yes, my family and I always have conversations about immigration. My family and I we think that illegal immigrants are here in America to have a better life and try to support their families, to give their children a better education then they had in their own country. I dont think people should judge illegal or legal immigrants by the way they look or where they come from because no matter what we are all immigrants.

4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today? Whats your opinion on the shoplifting analogy? Do you agree or not? Why?
I think that there still are some white Americans that a very racist. And they have a hard time understanding that it hurts people because they still do it. I do not agree with shoplifting because its wrong to steal something and its against the law. If you steal you may get caught and its going to be pretty bad.

5th Scene: (Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified? Where do they come from? What impact can they have? Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society? Why or why not?
Many people are stereotype about other cultures. They might like it or not and say something good or bad about it but its their opinion and you cant chance someones opinion. I dont think a person should choose a race or ethnicity but everyone has one.

6th Scene: (Family Bigots) Question: How would you react or respond to a bigot in your family?
You know I would accept that person as long as he or she doesnt go too far on what they say and think.

7th Scene:
(Go tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism? Why or why not? Or do you believe it only applies to some people? Why or why not?
Everybody of course is affected or will be affected by racism but there are some people that dont do anything about racism because they dont want maybe simply dont want to. And it only apply to some people that wants to stop racism because they are tired of hearing racism around them and around the world.

8th Scene: (White Racist Teen) Question: Do you believe that there is any hope for Eric? Explain. What would you do to help him if he was your friend or family member? In terms of a community or society, what can be done to reduce the number of young people who join these types of hate groups? What can be done to reduce their (hate groups) power in a community?I dontknow because this is Eric'slife and he's got to make his own decissions and mistakes so i thinkits up to Eric. I would try to talk to him and explain that racism hurts many people and that there are no need for racism today but again its up to him. I think that young people should be taught at a young age not to be racist towards others and give them a start in been respectful with other and not be racist.

I always knew about my culture and ethnicity because it is a big part of my family.  I am Cape Verdean and half of my family was born there.  The Cape Verdean language was spoken fluently in my environment.  I listen to the music and eat the food.  My ethnicity or culture was no surprise to me.

There are many reasons not to use racial slurs.  The most obvious one is that it really can hurt someone.  Everyone is different and should not be punished or be made fun of for it.  Next is because mostly everyone has either relatives or a friend who is from another background, culture or ethnicity.  They themselves may come from somewhere other than here or be another ethnicity.  It is not right to make fun of anyone because you dont know there situation or where theyve come from.  Another reason is because that person could be the best person youve ever met.  They can be your best friend or even your soul mate.  They may be able to teach you some cool things from there culture and visa versa.

I cant say my family has ever had a conversation like that, that I have witnessed.  However, my view on the issue of immigration is that it is fine to want to come here and make a better living for yourself but just do it legally.  Only because it isnt fair that some have to pay taxes and illegal immigrants dont.  I feel immigrants bring a lot to the community but dont take advantage, come here and do it the right way and live like everyone else.

I believe that not only wealthy white families are priviledged in our society.  I think everyone from the working middle classes and those from the lower working classes are sometimes treated unfairly in every race.  I think America today is more based on your economic status then just your race nowadays.  My opinion on the shoplifting analogy is that basically anybody from any race can steal, if you steal I think that is just ignorance on your part no matter what the race.  However, from my own personal experiences I do know that minorities are being targeted as shoplifters more than the majority because Ive been in a store before where I have had the employees follow me around to make sure I dont steal, this to me also shows ignorance.

I dont think any stereotypes are justified. I personally hate that some people rely so much on stereotypes.  Just because you are a certain race or different culture does not mean anything.  Everyone is there own person, no one should suffer because one individual made a wrong decision on there own.  Stereotypes to me, only come about when the issue is bad, but when the issue is good it has nothing to do with culture then that person accomplished it on there own.  Stereotypes come from ignorant people who obviously is too easily influenced by a certain situation.  Although, they can have a big impact on someone.  It hurts to be labeled something that your not.  My only advice and what I live by is be your own person who cares what people think.  If they think negative things about you then prove them wrong.  No one should have to choose a race or ethnicity be comfortable with yourself as long as your happy with yourself and the decisions you made at the end of the day is all that matters.

If there were a bigot in my family, I would respond to them the same way I would address a stranger.  It is not right to look down on others.  You dont know there situation or anything about them.  I would tell that person how I felt uncomfortable with that and try and show them the wrong I what there doing and try to explain to them the ways of the world.

I feel that everyone should try and do something about racism but if they dont want to thats on them.  It shouldnt be forced upon anyone, but if they stepped up and helped the world today would be a better place with less hate and more peace.

I believe there is hope for Eric just like there is hope for everyone.  If he was my friend or family member I would try and show him that its not cool to think that way and try to show him that people from different diversities are people too and deserve respect.  However, there is just so much you can do, most racist people are racist because thats how they were brought up.  I would try to show him, but Im not so sure if I would succeed if he doesnt want to change.  Tolerance can be done to help the hate groups.  If everyone relaxes and outnumbers them by joining other cultural activities or have an interest in other backgrounds they will feel left out and outnumbered and hopefully want to change.  The same can be done to diminish the hate groups power.

I first learned about my culture is when I was in seventh grade when I had to a project about my ethnicity now I had never learned about it before because I lived in America and that became my nationality and way of life my past wasnt really forced upon me also in part because I have several ethnicities I am Irish French German and Scottish so it would be a little difficult to be true to all of those customs and besides I would rather create myself and live my life based on my emotions rather that customs laid down by a culture I may not agree with.

I think racial slurs are discussing and that they are an uncreative way to identify someone or put them down but I think also that racial slurs by not being said and talked about by everybody of any race just empowers them I think that if everyone said all of those things all of the time people will cease to be offended by them the world would become meaningless racism and word only have the power to harm because of the power you put behind them your mindset is to be offended if you take out that part of the equation there will not be racism anymore.

My family has conversation about this kind of thing a lot of the time considering my father is a legal immigrant and my mother is from this country so they converse about both sides of the coin a lot which is good for me because I'm introduced to both sides of the picture.  I think immigrants can come here as long as they like as long as they do it the right way I mean is taking a test and taking the time to do it right worth the better life for you and your children youre looking for?

I think that unfortunately that there is still probably racism supporting the white man despite all that we have worked for to achieve equal right and to level the playing field. I think its wrong to blame a black person for shoplifting just because he is black.

Some are justified just because thats how people from different places are raised different environments raise people to their affinity stereotypes however can also be completely wrong and off base I dont think you should have to but if you do its okay to align yourself to something.

How do I respond? I deal with it I have to respect their opinion just because its theirs but I dont have to agree with what the opinion is

Yes because racism touches everyone everywhere no matter what

No it is so engrained into him that I dont think he can change.  To help him I would simply not give up on him and would try to break him of the evil thoughts he possesses.  To reduce the hate groups is to introduce people of different backgrounds to each other at an early age so that it is shown that there is no difference at an early age.

1st Scene:
I first learned about my own cultural when I was in like 6th grade maybe. I also knew that I was Cape Veadean and Jamaican but I just didnt just putting the pieces together that there is a major background on both of my cultures so thats when I started asking questions to my grandparents and did my research. It really didnt change me; it just made me aware on where I came from and whats behind it.

2nd Scene:
There are so many reasons for NOT using racial slurs but when its all said and done, its just so degrading.

3rd Scene:
Yes, I mainly talk about issues like this with my grandmother or my brother and his girlfriend. You already know how I view the issue on immigration. If youre legal then your cool with me but if youre illegal then you gotta go, plain and simply.

4th Scene:
Hell yes white Americans benefit from the system of racism. My opinion on shoplifting is that they still expect black people to still more then over white people.

5th Scene:
I dont know, I guess, somethings. They can have a huge impact at times but then again nothing at all. I dont believe that they should choose because you are what you are.

6th Scene:
Seeing how you cant change a bigots mind, I guess you would just have to live with it.

7th Scene: Yes I believe that everyone needs to do something about racism because thats the only way it will change for the good, if everyone comes together. No, it applies to everyone because we all live in one world.

8th Scene:
I dont believe that there is any hope for Eric, he is done for all Im concerned. First of all I would be his friend or family member so its hard for me to put my self in those shoes seeing how he is white. Provide new laws or something.

Respond to another students post with a comment, question or suggestion as well [20 points].

1st Scene:
(Native American Identity) Question: When did you first learn about your own cultural or ethnic identity?  How did it come about?  How did it change you? i learned about my curlture when i was very young. i didnt know about cultures till ike 6th grade. when i went to go into 7 th grade my mom told me that there are many diff people in the world and that i shouldnt judge them.. and she told me about cultures and race and religion. i started to leanr more about it in 7th grade history classes or "social studies." if effected my life because i started realizing htat people who are different were "Werid" then growing up.. i realized every one was different and there own kind. its not somthing they choose to be.. they jsut are it. and they cant change who they are.

2nd Scene:
(Racial Slurs) Question: How many reasons can you think of for NOT using racial slurs?  Brainstorm a list and explain each.
honestly. i can just say that it hurts peoples feelings and its not right htey cant change the way god made them. and usuing racial slurs  are ment to be hurtful, and ur own moral right should know not to use them.

3rd Scene:
(Italian Family) Question: Have your families ever had conversations like this?  How do you view the issue of immigration (legal or illegal)? my family has many convos like this.. i believe that what people do, most of them have a reason. i think that we should always compromise with people. make it easier to come to united states but harded to be illegal. maybe put up some wallls around our border.  and make the test easier and money wise easier to come to USA.

4th Scene:
(Discussion on Blame) Question: Do you believe that white Americans still benefit from a system of racism or privilege today?  Whats your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?  Why? white men do not benefit from the system of racism. there is racism now both ways. when a black man sees a white man .. and when a white man sees a black man. its no longer just a one way street. and i think shoplifting is on the person personality not there skin color.

5th Scene:
(Asian Americans) Question: Are cultural or ethnic stereotypes justified?  stereotyping isnt justified at all.. period. Where do they come from? sopmetimes it comes from ust peoples personalities and  they pass it to there kids.  What impact can they have?  they effect poeples lives very much . they hurt feelings and put people down .Should a person have to choose a race or ethnicity in our society?not at all. ithink that god put us on tyhis earth to live.. so we mine as well just live.. with out any worries or anything. because god wouldnt want us to fight and judge people. he just wanted people to live a life . a good satisfied content one at that.

6th Scene:

7th Scene:
(Go Tell it on the Mountain) Question: Do you believe that ALL people HAVE to do something about racism?not at all.  Why or why not?becuase not evry one feeels the same way .. that its a problem or not.  Or do you believe it only applies to some people?  only some Why or why not? becuase those who strongly dissagree should stand up and say somthing.

Whats your opinion on the shoplifting analogy?  Do you agree or not?

I dont think there is much hope for Eric, he said in the film that he has gone through periods where he goes back into the gangs.  There really isnt much to do for Eric, even if he was a family member or a friend.  I think exposing kids at an early age to different cultures and teaching them to respect people, no matter what they look like or what ethnicity they are.  If everyone stands up against the hate groups, then maybe they wouldn't be around. Or at least they wouldn't make their presence known.

1st--- i always knew about my culture and ethnic identity but it wasnt until i was about 13 that i really wanted to learn about it and learn the language.  It came about by my wanting to learn the language and by me learning the language, i learned more about the culture.  it changed me because i knew things i didn't know before.  my boyfriends family is very portuguese, and it helped me get to know them better.

2ed.----  because you dont know if that person has freinds or family of that race. you don't know if they just so happen to be of that culture.. you could say something really loud and upset someone that you don't even know.. you could say something and get hurt just because of something stupid that didn't have do be said.

3ed----- no, my mother really doesn't really bring up the issues on immigrants. i think she's okay with it, but the problems it brings with the economy she doesnt like.

4th---------yes.. i believe that white americans  still benefit from a seystem of racism because they are the only people who aren't considered a "minority" when they should be. i don't agree with the shoplifting analogy because white poeple shoplift too.

5th------  no. cultureal or ethnic stereotypes aren't justified.  they come from ignoreant people who arent educated about other cultures.

6th----  i would honstly ignore a bigot in my family because i believe in respecting your elders, but if they were my age i would tell them off.

7th------  i don't beleive that all people should do something about racism because not everyone would do something.. but i think it applies to the people who have influence and people who can do something.

8th-----i didn't watch this movie, but i believe there is hope for racist teens because they still have time to grow up and mature.  putting an age limit like haveing to be a certien age to join them, can reduce the number of young people who join these types of hate groups.  i don't know what could be done.
