Mr. E, I'm on the jury and don't really get what the three paged paper is supposed to be about. Im starting to research but don't really know what I'm looking for.
Mr. E i have a question i am on the witness and i dont really understand what you want me to do , I have to gather information on legal immaigrants and play that role? Im kind of confused?

Fair question. I want the jury members to summarize, through their research, all of the issues (both sides) related to immigration in the US right now. You should cite sources, use statistics, different perspectives, quote experts, etc.
a days wrote: yes, i dont agree with illegal immigrants.... and ima witness for them ...can i please be a witness for legal immigrants?
The two sides aren't legal and illegal. They are 1) change the policy and 2) stay the same. So what changes do Shallyn and Vanessa have in mind? That's what you and they (along with all of your other witnesses) can work on. If it's really an impossible matter on your part, see if anyone will switch with you, ok?

Yes, you are playing a role... so you can chose any age, background, status, etc. to play the part of a person who is going to answer questions from both sides of lawyers concerning immigration policy. You might want to look at the link on immigrant stories from the present or consider playing the role of any of the characters we saw in the documentaries we watched. You should do research that relates to your character, so if you character is a legla Hispanic immigrant, for instance, you should find out all you can on that particular group. The same goes if you were a different role, get it? Let me know if you need more direction.

Heather Roy wrote: Mr. E., I would rather be a part of the jury, if possible
I know you chose that Heather. I was trying to balance the sides. If it will be impossible for you, I can put you on the jury, but it's huge as it is. Can you convince someone on the jury to switch with you possibly?
mr. E im a witness on the prosecution side but i dont get what to do i dont understand the 3 different characters thing i dont understand who im writing to or about. like i dont understand how to start it off.

Its ok. I know it can be a confusing assignment if you've never done a mock trial before. Check out my response to Tiffany. She had a similar question. Then check back with me. Let me know and I'll try to explain better, ok?
-Hazleton, PA passed a law that would punish any businessmen who hired any illegal immigrants. But the federal judge blocked that this law be passed because he questioned whether it was directed to all Latinos or just those immigrants who were illegal.
-The Student Republican Club set up a meeting that was meant to address the issue of illegal immigrants in the United States. One of the activities that the members took part in was putting signs on them that read, “I am an immigrant.” The purpose of this “game” was to give out prizes to anyone who discovered those people with the signs on them. Even though the main purpose of this game was meant to be something good, many turned it around. One freshman student thought that some of the statements and points that were made were anti-Latino.
-In Boston, Massachusetts the immigrants that were arrested during the big immigration raid were being let go.There were about 20 factory workers who were actually let go. They were only 20 out of a total of 361 people who were arrested during that raid. Some of those who were accused to have been part of it were also sent to detention centers that were in Texas. Those that were there were ordered by the governor of Massachusetts to be sent back to Massachusetts. But there were also recent news that 20% of those immigrants involved in the raid were given letters that they had to deport back to the country where they came from.
-From 1821-2000 the number of immigrants coming to the United States rose from about 143,439 to about 9,095,417.
-In about 1990, it was recorded that the most amount of immigrants were admitted into the United States.
-The five countries that account for almost 40% of the immigrants into the United States were Mexico (approx. 206,426 immigrants), India (approx. 70,290 immigrants), China (approx. 56,426), Philippines (approx. 53,154), and Vietnam (approx. 35,531).
-In the present time there are about 17.5 illegal immigrants living in the United States.
Some laws: Immigration Act of 1819- this law set standards for ships bringing in immigrants. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848)- the United States granted Mexicans the right to be citizens of the US. The 14th Amendment (1868)- gave anyone that was born in the United States the right to enjoy and be granted the rights of any citizen of the United States no matter what race. Chinese Exclusion Act (1882)- this was banned for ten years, but later would give Chinese people the right to become citizens of the United States. Immigration Act of 1891- gave the federal government the right to inspect all incoming immigrants as they come in for jobs.
Is this okay for some of my points as a jury? I honestly don't know if I'm going in the right path!!
