Since he allowed segregation, what kind of influence do you think it had over the United States?...I mean, if the president is encouraging segregation, do you think it changed the views of some U.S. citizens on the issue of segregation?

John F. Kennedy (35th President)1. Member of the Democratic Party; served from 1961-1963.2. When he came back from the war, Kennedy became a Democratic Congressman from the Boston area, and in 1953 became part of the Senate.3. Millions of people watched his television debates with the Republican candidate, Richard M. Nixon.4. Became the first Roman Catholic President.5. His economic programs launched the country on its longest sustained expansion since World War II; before his death, he laid plans for a massive assault on persisting pockets of privation and poverty. 6. He took vigorous action in the cause of equal rights, calling for new civil rights legislation.7. Kennedy wished America to resume its old mission as the first nation dedicated to the revolution of human rights.8. He brought American idealism to the aid of developing nations with the Alliance for Progress and the Peace Corps.9. Shortly after his inauguration, Kennedy permitted a band of Cuban exiles, already armed and trained, to invade their homeland. The attempt to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro was a failure.10. The Soviet Union renewed its campaign against West Berlin. Kennedy replied by reinforcing the Berlin garrison and increasing the Nation's military strength, including new efforts in outer space. (Confronted by this reaction, Moscow, after the erection of the Berlin Wall, relaxed its pressure in central Europe.)11. Kennedy imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba when air reconnaissance discovered in October 1962 that the Russians sought to install nuclear missiles in Cuba.12. His Inaugural Address offered the memorable injunction: "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country."

President Ronald Wilson Reagan, in office from 1981-1989

The rise of conservatism during the Election of 1980 in response to the overwhelmingly liberal sixties set the stage for actor-turned-politician Ronald Reagan to win the presidency. The combined efforts of the Old Right, which included those skeptical of a government too involved with the lives of the people, and the surfacing of the New Right, made up primarily of Christian evangelical groups that opposed the immorality and political stances of the typical Democrat of the time. The House of Representatives had a Republican majority for the first time in twenty five years, as well.

In office, Reagan focused on national defense rather than become concerned with issues like the environment or social security. Despite making amends with the Soviet Union through their leader Mikhail Gorbachev, foreign affairs in the Middle East and Latin America left enough dark spots to cover up most of the good he and his administration accomplished. Reagan also left the country in enormous debt - more than all of the presidents before him had accumulated!

Under Reagan abortion and affirmative action took hard political blows. Near the end of his second term in 1989, a set of court cases, Wards Cove Packing v. Antonia and Martin v. Wilks, made proving reverse discrimination easier, but some of these changes were reversed in 1991. Also in 1989, Webster v. Reproductive Health Services gave just enough leeway to states regarding the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 to cause conflict. In 1992, Planned Parenthood v. Casey had the same effect.

Ultimately, Reagan and the abundant conservatism helped define an entire decade in Americas history.

I'm just elaborating on Brandi's post about FDR & the new deal.

The new deal as she said was a type of relief for the economy to rebuild the country internally.
*FDIC - The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is a United States government corporation created by the Glass-Steagall Actof 1933. This corporation provides deposit insurance for any checking or savings account and prevents any mishaps that mayb have occurred during the dperession.
*Social Security System - a system setup to prevent poverty and help the disabled, unemployed, and old age.
*Civilian Conservation Corps. - work relief program set up for families with unemployed young men to internally improve the country. These men were payed to do outdoor construction work.

Richard Milhous Nixon
During Nixons presidency, he was Committed to winding down the U.S. role in the Vietnamese War, Nixon pursued Vietnamizationtraining and equipping South Vietnamese to do their own fighting. American ground combat forces in Vietnam fell steadily from 540,000 when Nixon took office to none in 1973 when the military draft was ended. But there was heavy continuing use of U.S. air power.
Nixon improved relations with Moscow and reopened the long-closed door to mainland China with a good-will trip there in Feb. 1972. In May of that same year, he visited Moscow and signed agreements on arms limitation and trade expansion and approved plans for a joint U.S.Soviet space mission in 1975.
Inflation was a campaign issue for Nixon, but he failed to master it as president. On Aug. 15, 1971, with unemployment edging up, Nixon abruptly announced a new economic policy: a 90-day wage-price freeze, stimulative tax cuts, a temporary 10% tariff, and spending cuts. A second phase, imposing guidelines on wage, price, and rent boosts, was announced Oct. 7.
The economy responded in time for the 1972 campaign, in which Nixon played up his foreign-policy achievements. Played down was the burglary on June 17, 1972, of Democratic national headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex in Washington. The NixonAgnew reelection campaign cost a record $60 million and swamped the Democratic ticket headed by Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota with a plurality of 17,999,528 out of 77,718,554 votes. Only Massachusetts, with 14 electoral votes, and the District of Columbia, with 3, went for McGovern.
In Jan. 1973, hints of a cover-up emerged at the trial of six men found guilty of the Watergate burglary. With a Senate investigation under way, Nixon announced on April 30 the resignations of his top aides, H. R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman, and the dismissal of White House counsel John Dean III. Dean was the star witness at televised Senate hearings that exposed both a White House cover-up of Watergate and massive illegalities in Republican fund-raising in 1972.The hearings also disclosed that Nixon had routinely tape-recorded his office meetings and telephone conversations.
On Oct. 10, 1973, Agnew resigned as vice president, then pleaded no-contest to a negotiated federal charge of evading income taxes on alleged bribes. Two days later, Nixon nominated the House minority leader, Rep. Gerald R. Ford of Michigan, as the new vice president. Congress confirmed Ford on Dec. 6, 1973.
In June 1974, Nixon visited Israel and four Arab nations. Then he met in Moscow with Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev and reached preliminary nuclear arms limitation agreements.
But, in the month after his return, Watergate ended the Nixon regime. On July 24 the Supreme Court ordered Nixon to surrender subpoenaed tapes. On July 30, the Judiciary Committee referred three impeachment articles to the full membership. On Aug. 5, Nixon bowed to the Supreme Court and released tapes showing he halted an FBI probe of the Watergate burglary six days after it occurred. It was in effect an admission of obstruction of justice, and impeachment appeared inevitable.
Nixon resigned on Aug. 9, 1974, the first president ever to do so. A month later, President Ford issued an unconditional pardon for any offenses Nixon might have committed as president, thus forestalling possible prosecution.

Jillian, from the information I have read on President Richard Nixon, I think he had potential to be a good president, but he got caught doing something wrong.  If he was a good man he wouldnt have resigned and if he wasnt in the wrong, why would President Ford Pardon him from all charges.  One day I will be the greatest president ever.

Jimmy Carter

1) Jimmy Carter was president from 1977- 1981

2) During his presidency two cabinet-level departments were created, the Department of Energy and the Department of Education.

3) He also established a national energy policy, removed price controls from domestic petroleum production, and advocated for America to rely less on foreign oil sources.

4) A big part of American foreign policy during his presidency was his support of basic human rights, unlike presidents before him, he did not overlook human rights violations that were committed by countrys allied with the US. He ended the US support of the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua for their human rights violations.

5) His last year in office was dominated by the Iran hostage crisis. In 1979 the Shah of Iran was allowed into the US for asylum after he was overthrow in Iran, Iranian militants seized the American embassy In Tehran and took 53 Americans hostage. They demanded the return of the Shah for trial in Iran, the return of the Shahs wealth to the Iranian people, the USs admission of guilt for its past actions in Iran and an apology, as well as a promise from the US that it would not interfere in Irans affairs in the future. The hostages were released with the signing of Executive Orders 12277 through 12285 which released all assets belonging to the Iranian government and the Shah. The Iranian Hostage Crisis is seen as a major reason why Carter was not reelected in 1980 since his administration was seen as being ineffectual during the crisis.

6) When he entered the 1976 presidential race he was unknown and many believed he did not have a chance, but to most Americans it was a good thing that he was unknown and not associated with Washington since Nixons Watergate Scandal had happened so recently.

7) During his time in office the economy suffered, there was inflation, very high interest rates, oil shortages, high unemployment and slow economic growth.

8) Carter appointed many women, African Americans and Hispanics to government and judiciary positions.

9) Within his first month in office, Carter cut the defense budget by $6 billion and ordered the removal of all nuclear weapons from South Korea and he also intended to cut back the number of US troops who were stationed there. He planned to remove all but 14,000 troops by 1982 but once he cut 3,600 troops, he was forced to abandon this in 1978.

10) The Panama Canal Treaties were signed in 1977 and they were considered a very controversial move in Carters presidency. These treaties transferred the control of the Panama Canal from the US to the country of Panama, this was opposed because the canal was seen as an important asset to the US and Panama was an unstable country run by a dictator. In the end this treaty improved US relations with Panama and Latin American.

And

At the 2007 Grammy Awards Carter won the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.

Amongst Presidents who served at least one full term, Carter is the only one who never made an appointment to the Supreme Court.

During his administration, Carter, his family and all of his White House staff took the first English language speed reading course ever developed.

In order to support his energy policies, Carter wore sweaters, installed solar hot water panels on the roof of the White House, installed a wood stove in the living quarters, ordered the General Services Administration to turn off hot water in some facilities, and requested that Christmas decorations remain dark in 1979 and 1980.
