Chapter 12- The Second War for Independence and the Upsurge of Nationalism, 1812-1824At the beginning of the War of 1812, America was hoping of conquering Canada but their strategy was very flawed and we were now on the defense instead of on the offense.By 1814, America was faring better in the naval side of the war but the British had burned down Washington and threatened to attack New Orleans. The war ended with the Treaty of Ghent in a stalemate and none of the original issues were settled.Even though some New Englanders were talking about secessionism, the war actually was a surge for American nationalism and unity. It appeared in diverse areas of culture, economics and foreign policy. This was one of the first times in Americas history where this happened. The Era of Good Feelings emerged when President Madison was inaugurated. But this Era was soon threatened by the Panic of 1819.Excessive land speculation and unstable banks brought on the Panic of 1819.An even more serious threat was the first major sectional dispute over slavery. He was postponed but was not really resolved by the Missouri Compromise of 1820.The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was an agreement, which prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the 36 30 line except within the boundaries of Missouri.Chief Justice John Marshall helped the Supreme Court further enhance its role as the major force upholding a powerful national government and conservative defense of property rights. The newfound nationalism led to a more assertive American foreign policy. Andrew Jacksons military adventures in Spanish Florida resulted in the cession of that territory to the U.S.American fears of European intervention in Latin America encouraged Monroe and J. Q. Adams to lay down the Monroe Doctrine.

..so Butchie the era was soon threatedned by the Panic if 1819 right? well what exactly brought about the Panic? yes is was the excessive land speculation and unstable banks but in depth what caused it? was the Panic of 1819 inevitable?
Butchie you may alos want to explain the perdicament with Americans during the war of 1812. The Federalist States didnt not want to support the war becuase it was hurting them and their beliefs on buisness with other countries and were later forced to contribute to the war they didnt want any part in.
That was a nice refreshment of Chapter 12. I feel so much smarter now ... sorta. Anyways... Why were New Englanders threatening to secceed from the union? Is this the era of US history in which New England was supporting Britain for a while?? I can't remember.
ok... im really confused. im guessing the second war for independence was war of 1812, but theres like, so much info all mashed together.... its kindof difficult and murky to get through...
The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812. Fighting immediately stopped when news of it reached the battlefield. (kinda crazy what a piece of paper can do) But the fighting stopped after the Americans won a victory at the Battle of New Orleans. (We always gotta end it on top ) James Madison exchanged papers with a British diplomat on the 17th of February and it was proclaimed on the 18th.
