The California Gold Rush began in 1848 when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill.  That caused about 300,000 people to come to California.  It also attracted many people from Latin America, Europe, Australia, Europe, and Asia.  San Francisco to a boomtown with many churches, houses, and towns.  Laws were formed and California became a state.  New methods of transportation were built.  But a negative effect was that Native Americans were forced off their lands and attacked.  Gold mining caused environmental harm.

Not only was Harriet Tubman an escaped slave who rescued thousands of other african americans, but she was an extremely active woman's activist.  She often spoke for womans sufferage and african americans.

As the Whigs split up/died out, how did the political environment change? (i.e. where does the clear cut between the 'Democrats' and the 'Republicans' come in?)

The California Gold Rush was one of the reasons for U.S. expansion west.  Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, and about 300,000 Americans traveled to California, as well as tens of thousands from Latin America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Haha, not reading Brandi's post...
The main purpose of the Free Soil Party was opposing the expansion of slavery into the territories, however, they were not against the idea of slavery

well Curt about 300,000 people came to California after gold was discovered there. Needless to say yes it helped promote the idea of Manifest Destiny because it created a serious hunger for more gold which after it was found in California then why not somewhere else too.

The Missouri Compromise was an agreement between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the US Congress.  It mainly involved the regulation of slavery in the western territories.  It prohibited slavery in the LouisianaTerritory but excluded some boundaries of Missouri.
