The First Continental Railroad was authorized by the Pacific Railway Act of 1862.  It was heavily backed by the federal government.  It was the growing achievement of Abraham Lincoln.

In the United States, the term transcontinental railroad usually refers to a line over the Rocky Mountains between the Midwest and Pacific Ocean. Some of the eastern trunk lines are covered in railroads connecting New York City and Chicago.
  • The First Transcontinental Railroad was completed on may 10, 1869, with the golden spike ceremonially driven at Promontory, Utah, after track was laid over a 1,756 mile (2,826 km) gap between Sacramento and Omaha in six years by the Union Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad.

(wikipedia.com)

Now my own words:  The Transcontinental Railroad created a large sum of wealth because of railroad companies and offered many jobs to immigrants or the poor.  Building Railroads across the country connected industries and people from other towns.  It was quite a convenience.

"Jane Addams founded the Hull House in 1889 to teach children and adults the skills and knowledge that they would need to survive and succeed in America."

The first juvenile court in the United States was formed by the actions of Hull House members.  They also influenced lawmaking on child labor, occupational safety and health provisions, compulsory education, immigrant rights, and pension laws.

Why was the first transcontinental railroad so important?  Why did France give us the Statue of LIberty in the first place?

The first transcontinental railroad was important because it was the fastest route into the west.  This began the settlement of the western frontier and also linked the country economically.  The Statue of Liberty was given to the US by France as a symbol of friendship between the two nations.

I always thought it was kind of interesting that Americans would practice survival of the fittest and Social-Darwinism and yet stop the spread of the theory of evolution. Strange

Well, Im not sure if this is the same thing because I've never heard of it either, but when I researched The Gospel of Wealth was an essay written by Andrew Carnegie that described the responsibility of philanthropy (the act of donating money, goods, time, or effort to support a cause) by the new upper class of self-made rich.  The thesis of his essay was the danger of allowing large sums of money to be passed into someones hands that are not mentally or emotionally able to cope with them.
