Chapter 25 American Moves To the City, 1865-1900

The United States population began to move from the countryside into the cities.

Over population in the cities led to sanitary and severe social problems.

Native U.S. citizens met the immigrants from Ireland and Europe with great hostility and discrimination.

American Education expanded in this period especially at the high school and graduate levels.

Families began to isolate themselves from society and the divorce rate rose while the average family size shrunk.

American literature and art began to reflect a new realism.

Popular amusement became a big business as the work week gradually shortened.

The National Prohibition Party was formed in 1869.  Militant women formed the Womans Christian Temperance Union in 1874.

In 1882, Congress passed the first restrictive law against immigrants.  It forced paupers, criminals, and convicts back to their home countries.

In 1885, Congress prohibited the importation of foreign workers under contract-usually for substandard wages.  Federal laws were later enacted that were made to keep the undesirables out of America.

In 1882, Congress barred the Chinese completely from immigrating to the United States (Chinese Exclusion Act).

Theme: In the late nineteenth century, American society was increasingly dominated by large urban centers. Explosive urban growth was accompanied by often disturbing changes, including the New Immigration, crowded slums, new religious outlooks, and conflicts over culture and values. While many Americans were disturbed by the new urban problems, cities also offered opportunities to women and expanded cultural horizons.

Do you think a large urban community is still one of the reasons why the divorce rate is so high these days?

As we all know, the time period following this chapter would be the roaring 20's, a time for rebellion. In a way, do you think that the ways in this chapter set up these rebellious ways? Consider the increase in divorce rates, realism, immigration, and popular amusement.

Yes Julia Greene that could be one of the reasons that the divorce rate is soo high because people in the city tend to be more independant so they do not depend on their spouses to live.  The Farmers though depend on there whole family to survive so the divorce rate tends to be lower.  Im pretty sure im the only person that would give this reason but whatever.

Jillian I thought we were friends and now you have to come up with this rediculous question but yea i do think that this period set up the rebellious 20's even though there are ten years between them.

Jill, what's the connection that you arte trying to draw?  For instance, are you assuming that there are more married women living in cities than small towns?

so tom.. the Chinese Exclusion Act actually did not completely ban chinese immigration to the United States they just simply suspended it for 10 years.  .............Even though the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Fransicso Bay allowed 56,113 Chinese Immigrants in the United States.

Well, Bob. Tom stated that when people moved into cities, the family size shrunk and divorce rates grew. I wasn't saying that there were MORE married women in cities than small towns.  I was trying to say that it looked like Tom was saying that people that lived in the rural areas more often stayed together.

I know you said women had new opportunities, but what kind of opportunities were they? I mean, were they jobs that were equal in pay as men? Or were they opportunities in other ways. The possibilities I think is kinda broad. =]

Many Native US citizens objected to Irish immigrants because they were Roman Catholic.... and in order to keep america pure, citizens should be primarily protestant.  Most of these citizens who opposed immigrants were part of the Know Nothing Party.... who made it a point to prevent foreigners from being elected into government and to 'protest' against immigration.

Today we are so proud of our diverse population here in America... however... it was like pulling teeth for people to accept it in the old days.

I think there 'a lot a lotta' factors, but perhaps the clash of ideas - some (not all) women pursuing new freedoms and some (not all) men trying to maintain traditions - could certainly contribute to the crisis, even now. and the city would totally be the battleground for the conflict. word.

Information from Ch. 25 in the textbook:  In the 1880's and 1890's, America was putting together hight-quality symphony orchestras.  The Metropolitan Opera House of New York was built in 1883.  The symphonies and operas were devoted to bringing European music to American audiences.  African American traditions like spirituals and "ragged music" were evolving into the blues, ragtime, and jazz, which had a big impact on the music of the twentieth century in America.
