1790s

During this time Washington, after eight years in presidency, would give his farewell address to the people and John Adams would come into presidency in 1792 where he would stay for another two terms to come. During his administration, Adams would quickly see consequences for his action when he would send Americans to set peace with the British queen through the Jay treaty. Firstly, it damaged a relationship with America and the French. The French response also known as the XYZ Affair was insulting to the American people. Adams famous response to the issue was "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute!" But the jay treaty did help the American west as the Indian problem in the Northwest Territory died down as England discontinued supplying guns to the natives.

The trying Alien and Sedition acts of 1798 were surely nothing short of controversial. The Federalist Party would argue it to be to protect the government when in actuality the reason it was brought up was to diminish the powers of the Republican support. Jefferson and Madison would quickly come up with the Virginia and Kentucky resolves to fight against the new acts. They deemed that states had the right to shoot down federal laws if it were interfering with the peoples rights. The acts would eventually, be put down in Jeffersons time in presidency with the declare being unconstitutionality on civil rights. In the closing pint of the century in 1800, Jefferson would take his administration into presidency were he pledges to serve in the government for the people.

Summary-

Washingtons farewell

Adams presidency

Jays treaty

XYZ affair

Battle of fallen timbers (end to English-Indian affairs)

Alien and Sedition Acts

Virginia And Kentucky Resolve

Idea of states before government

Republicans back in office (Jefferson)

Steven,
Your thing isn't exactly a timeline now is it? haha =] Just kidding mine wasn't either. =] But anyways, you had to cover a very intersting chapter. It went through so many things and so many people!  I mean, from Washington, to Adams, to Jefferson, to Madison, and the Americans and the French. That's a lt of stuff!  This is probably the most depressing chapter for Melanie since Washington had to give his farewell address. =] hehe biggrin

The Alien Sedition Act was a law passed by the Federalists in Congress in 1798 during the administration of President John Adams. Proponents claimed they were designed to protect the United States from alien citizens of enemy powers and to stop seditious attacks from weakening the government. The Democratic-Republicans, like later historians, attacked them as being both unconstitutional and designed to stifle criticism of the administration, and as infringing on the right of the states to act in these areas.

The XYZ Affair was a 1797 diplomatic episode that worsened relations between the United States and France and led to the undeclared Quasi-War of 1798. Jay's Treaty of 1795 angered France, which was at war with Britain and interpreted the treaty as evidence of an Anglo-American alliance. President John Adams and his Federalist Party had also been critical of the tyranny and extreme radicalism of the French Revolution, further souring relations between France and the United States.
