1860- Abraham Lincoln is elected president (this is very important. This is the start of a new life for African Americans and for everyone. It is the start of a civil war.)
 
1861- Civil war begins (the south if fighting the north and vise versa for slavery reasons. The south want slaves and the north do not. The south feel that without slaves, their cotton business will not prosper and they will be weak. The north feels that it is unjust to have slaves, even though racism was very high in the north. It is a deadly war, one that America has never seen)
 
1861- On April 12^th Attack on Fort Sumter off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina starts the Civil war.
 
1862- Known as the single most bloodiest day of the entire war, the battle of Antietam was fought.  
1863- Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves (The tricky part of this is that it actually did not free any slaves, the 13^th amendment did. The Proclamation actually was supposed to ban slavery in the south but the war was going on and Lincoln had no say in the south. The Emancipation Proclamation actually just looked good in writing.)
 
1865- The Civil war ends at Appomattox courthouse (this 4-year war took a toll on America. The south surrendered and the north won. America had never seen such a war. It was one of the bloodiest wars ever and the worst war ever seen up to that point in time. It led to the death or wounding of more than 600,000 people. The south was forced to be joined back into the union but slavery had to be banned.)
 
1865- President Lincoln was assassinated. (Was shot while attending a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre with his wife. The assassin was  John Wilkes Booth hoping to overthrow the Federal government.)
 
1865- thirteenth amendment abolishes slavery
 
1868- Fourteenth Amendment grants full citizenship to all (including African Americans) born in the US except Native Americans. 
 
1869- the first railroad connecting the East and the west coast was officially completed.

April 3, 1860- The Pony Express began its first run from Saint Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California.

1861 West Virginia was founded because of disputes on union and confederate opinions

don't forget, the civil war was not over slavery. it began b/c the south broke away from the union. the north began war to bring the south back into the union. the war was never about slavery. after the north won lincoln was pretty much like, well i might as well get slavery over with now cause thats just another war waiting.
