TIMELINE 1880-1890
1880- President Benjamin Hayes signed the Chinese Exclusion Treaty, which reversed the Open-Door Policy.It put limits on the number of Chinese immigrants allowed to enter the U.S. and how many could become naturalized citizens.
1881- Helen Hunt Jackson publishes A Century of Dishonor about the Native Americans and their poor treatment from the U.S.It shocked the country with proof of broken promises and treaties and all the brutal ways white pioneers pushed them out of our country.
1882- Jesse James is shot in the back by Robert Ford hoping to collect a $5,000 reward.James was a notorious outlaw who was a veteran of Quantrills Raiders during the Civil War.His death ended the gang that terrorized the West for more than a decade.
1883- The Supreme Court declares part of the Civil Rights Act of 1875 unconstitutional because the Court allowed private individuals to discriminate based on race.
1884- The first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary is published. WOO-HOO!
1885- The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor- gift from the French.
1886-Strike begins in the U.S. which turned into the Haymarket Riot, winning the eight-hour workday. Coca-Cola was invented!!
1887- The U.S. Senate allows the Navy to lease Pearl Harbor as a naval base
1888- The Washington Monument opens to the public
1889- President Cleveland signs a bill admitting the Dakotas, Montana, and Washington as U.S. states
1890- Vincent van Gogh shoots himself in the chest and dies two days later.The Daughters of the American Revolution is founded
hey julia i actually think you did bettter than you thought i just was wondering what was really going on with foreign relations during the time. I know we were going through the gilded age at this time and we started industrializing more after reconstruction so you'd figure that we would have some contact with other nations??
Well, obviously we didn't have very good relations with the Chinese because we weren't letting them into our country. I'm not sure about relations with other nations so I'll have to try to look it up and get back to you!

" he was shot in his home in st. joseph , missouri. the bullet can still be seen in wall ( i saw it my self. the house now a little meusem). he was actually shot in the back of the head. the reward was actually 10,000 dollars, which the ford brothers (bob and charley) recieved only a portion of, law officails in on the murder also recieved some of the money which was offered by a railroad company terriorised by james.

1885 - President Grover Cleveland warns so-called "Boomers" to stay off Indian Territory lands in present-day Oklahoma.
1889 - At the urging of the National Farmers' Alliance, Kansas adopts first-of-its-kind legislation regulating trusts, providing an early portent of the agrarian-based progressive movement preparing to sweep through the West.
