Post 10 of the most important events in the decade assigned. Explain each briefly (descriptively and in context of other events, individuals and issues of that time).
1.)1980- Sadam Hussein launches war against Iran for close to a decade over oil rights. Iraqi President Sadam Hussein proclaims the 1975 Iran-Iraq Algiers Agreement null and void and Iraq invades Iran to acquire the Shatt al-Arab region. Arab states split their support in the conflict, with Joran and Saudi Arabia supporting Iraq.
2.)1981- Pope John Paul is shot in and assassination attempt in Rome. As he blessed the crowds at St. Peters Square in Rome by a 23-year old Turkish citizen by the name of Mehmet Ali Hagca. The pope was shot 4 times, twice in his stomach. Luckily he survived.
3.) 1983 - U.S. Embassy is bombed in Beirut. On April 18th Islamist groups attacked a U.S. diplomatic mission marking the beginning of anti-U.S. attacks. 400 pounds of explosives were used by suicide bombers killing 63 people and leaving more than 100 wounded. The embassy was move to a safer location in East Beirut but was once again attacked in 1984, killing 22 more people.
4.) 1985- Widespread famine in Ethiopia, due to wars of liberation in Tigre and Eritrea, was compounded by severe drought, led to as many as 1 million deaths, and sparked massive international relief efforts, including the July 1985 internationally televised Live Aid concerts.
5.) 1986- The Space Shuttle Challenger explodes on January 26th killing all seven onboard. Five men and two women including the first teacher in space were just over a minute into the flight as the Challenger exploded over Cape Canaveral in Florida.
6.) 1986- An explosion takes place at a nuclear reactor in Chernobyl in the Soviet Union killing 31 people and wounded several others. The explosion was caused by an eruption in the graphite core of one of four reactors released radioactive materials that spread over part of the Soviet Union, Eastern & Western Europe, and Scandinavia.
7.)1987-The largest stock-market drop in Wall Street history occurres on "Black Monday", October 19th, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 508.32 points, losing 22.6% of its total value. That fall far surpassed the one-day loss of 12.9% that began the great stock market crash of 1929 and foreshadowed the Great Depression.
8.)1988- Earthquake in the USSR. This event caused catastrophic damage that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths in Northwest Armenia, a Soviet Republic along with some damage in Turkey.
9.) 1989- Berlin Wall comes down. Used as a separation barrier between West Berlin and East Germany, the Berlin Wall was the most prominent part of the inner German border and an iconic symbol of the Cold War. Its collapse came in November of 1989 symbolizing a decisive stage in the irreversible collapse of the Stalinist states of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
10.) 1989- Montreal Massacre. On Dec. 6, 1989 an enraged gunman named Marc Lepine roamed the corridors of Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique and killed 14 female students and wounded 13 others. This event marked the worst single-day massacre in Canadian history and outraged millions about violence against women.

1989 - Soviet citizens gain rights and other eastern Europeans overthrow despots in spontaneous uprisings after Beijing cracks down on dissidents with a bloody massacre.

no it was 1988, elections always happen on even years. no way could it have been 1989. and about your post on 1986, what did the public find out that made reagan look like an idiot, were you refering to your pervious post about the 1985 terrorist negotiations?
