Spanish America War

The Spanish-American war lasted from April 1898- August 1898. The cause of the war was due to Spain's inability to resolve the problems in Spainish-controlled Cuba, after America demanded they do something to end the conflicts. Many things provoked the war, such as the suspicious explosion of an American battle ship, the "Maine" in the harbor of Havannah. One major cause of tension was the use of "yellow journalism" by American newspapers, which fabricated stories on the war and the way the Spanish were going about their defences. These fabricated stories enraged American citizens, who believed they were true, and led to more tension among the people and the government, whom they believed were not handeling the enemy forcefully enough. Eventually, America won major battles in the Phillipines and Cuba, and The Treaty Of Paris was created to end the conflict. Thanks to the Treaty, the U.S gained control of Spanish colonies in Puerto Rico, the Phillipines and Guam. Eventually, America took over Cuba and ended the conflicts that had been the cause of the war. By 1902, America gave the island of Cuba it's independace from Spain for good.
Other Stuff:
1. Cuba remained influenced by America and under jurisdiction of the Platt Amendment until 1959 ---credit Mr. E
2. American intervention started with Theodore Roosevelt, then serving as assistant secretary of the Navy, organizing an all-volunteer regiment which became known as the "Rough Riders", under the command of Leonard Wood & Roosevelt
3. The first battle in Cuba took place in Guantanamo Bay on June 10

This is just my opinion, but to me at this time, it seemed like the US was just putting their nose in everyone's business.  I mean, did the whole situation really have to do with them?  I mean ya they were upset with the way the Spanish were going about things, but they only had suspisions about the explosion of the ship "Maine" in the Havannah harbor. I mean, was that really enough to get them involved.  It ended up being good that Cuba got independence from Spain, but I don't know, that's just how I feel about the whole situation.

no Brandi, you're pretty much right. But, this was about the time of "yellow journalism", which was just journalists making up stories about what Spain was doing to like, sabotage America and crap. So it was basically like, the American public making a big deal out of nothing, and that reflected on the army, which sortof lead to the war.

Do you think the Americans or the Cubans had provoked the Spanish American War? There are the issues of the sinking of the Maine and the Rough Riders assault that both happened and related to sparking the war between the two.

well, no one really knows what happened to the Maine. Its speculated that it was a problem on board the ship that actually blew it up. But, journalists in America made it a huge deal and came up with all these unfounded stories about how it was the Spanish military trying to provoke the U.S into a fight.
And then of course, they sent in the volunteer brigade, the Rough Riders to take care of things once they were convinced that the Spanish government wasn't going to do anything to stop what was going on in Cuba.

So, yes. America kindof started the whole thing by not finding out the facts first about the whole situation with the Maine. Until they figured out what was up, nothing drastic should have been done.

Many people believe that the US perposely caused the explosion of Maine and wanted a war with Spain to get Cuba. What is your opinion?

What did the Treaty of Paris do for Spain?...The U.S. got the territories of the Philippinies, Guam, and Puerto Rico, but what did Spain get out of it, besides the U.S. leaving them alone?...or was that all they got from it?

Don't we hold our terrorist prisoners at Guatnanomo Bay?  Why is America so nosy and feel that we need to know everyone's business.

Platt Amendment basically put out the idea that Cuba would not give any of its land to anyone other than the United States. Basically no power of Cuba would be given to anyone other than the US. I had never heard of this amendment so I wanted to get a little more information for it!!!biggrin Maybe it could also benefit someone else.biggrin
