Progressivism and the Republican Roosevelt:

This chapter is talking about the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt who was the 26th president of the United States of America. He was the Republican leader and the leader of the Progressive Movement. Progressivism is the term that is given to a way of thinking that arose in the 19th century in America. It refers to the change in the social and political ways of thinking. Along with these changes, during this time, came the change from a farming country to an industrial country. Progressivism also brought with it change for the rights of workers and social justice. Progressives also created laws, called anti-trust laws, which went against the ideas of monopolies which was a form of marketing where there is only one provider of a product or service. This chapter also talks about the Square Deal which was an idea that was started by TR during his presidency. Since he was against those that were too wealthy and only looked to benefit themselves he did this deal as sort of an agreement between both the wealthy and the average workers. Along with this idea came the reason why he started the anti-trust laws which were those laws that spoke against monopolies. He thought of monopolies as bad things that should no longer be encouraged but done away with. He didnt agree with the fact that it overly benefited the wealthy and not the average workers. Railroads also were a way where Roosevelt felt he could put out his ideas more easily in speaking against the different trusts, giving him the title of a trust buster, (even though his successor William Howard Taft actually busted more trust that TR did.) During his presidency TR also pushed Congress to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 provided that a federal meat inspection be done and also prohibited that bad food products of poisonous medicines be sold or transported. This act also gave way to outlaw other products which were considered to be unsafe. The Meat Inspection act also provided federal meat inspections and would do away with any meat which was considered to be unfit for humans to eat. There was a panic in 1907 that also took place during TRs presidency. TR wanted to help those countries who were not yet fully developed. His most famous act in improving the foreign policy was the construction of the Panama Canal. When Taft came into presidency he signed the very important Payne-Aldrich Tariff which was the name given to the bill that was passed that was meant to lower the prices of the tariffs that were place on the goods coming into the US. Tafts presidency finally split the Republicans from the Progressives.

Theodore Roosevelt wanted the Panama Canal so much that he actually helped rebells in Panama to try to take over the coutry so the US could control it. He succeeded in freeng Panama from Colombia and thus gained access. Thousands of people died in creating it due to malaria and yellow fever.

You mentioned that the Square Deal was a deal between the wealthy and the average workers, but what was the agreement?

Since TR had started anti-trust laws against companies that favored the wealthy more than the consumers and workers, this Deal was supposed to form a sense of fairness between the wealthy and the workers.  Does that sort of answer your question?confused

The Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906 provided for meat inspections. It forbade the manufacture, sale, or transportation poisonous food or drugs. People began exposed to education and authors such as Upton Sinclair, Samuel Hopkins Adams, social activist Florence Kelley, and researcher Harvey W. Wiley. This law made sure that labels were correct on food and drugs.

Theodore Roosevelt freed Panama from Columbia, gaining access to the Panama Canal.  However around this time, thousands of people died from malaria and yellow fever.  Were those diseases pesent among the US as much at the time? or maybe just from those who brought disease from other countries ?
