From the movie living in china is alot different from America. There are many poor people in china and its overpopulated. Also women in china marry very quickly. In the 20th century in China there was many pictures everywhere of there leader Mao.

How did the characters of the husband and wife change through their lives and experiences? What changed the most? The least?

The characters of the husband and wife changed in many ways but what changed them the most i think was when the husband got all of there property tooken away because of gamblen. I think the thing that least changed them was when there daughter got married.

Why is the movie titled, To Live? What do you think it means in your life to live?
The movie was titled to live because the movie was all about how they live. In my life to live means to just live with your family and how you do in life.

What lessons does the story teach us? About family? About survival? About love? About government? About power? About communism?
This movie taught me to not gamblen haha. It taught that no matter what your family is always theere for you and i dont thin kit taught me anything about power govvernment and communism

From the movie, describe life in China through the 20th century.  Include living conditions, food, music, pastimes, family relationships, etc.
Life in China through the 20th century was pretty tough.  The living conditions were kinda poor, the food looked good, music is different, their pastimes were those puppet things, and the family was close.  I don't think I'd want to live in China in the 20th century.

How did the characters of the husband and wife change though their lives and experiences? What changed the most? The least?
The characters of the husband and wife changed though their lives and experiences a lot.  In the begining, he gambled a lot so she didn't like that too much so she left him.  I don't blame her though.  And when she had the baby boy, she came back when she found out that he wasn't gambling again because she did love him.  And they stayed together through all of the rest, the son dieing, the daughter getting married, the change in government.  They respected eachother and got along after the gambling was over.

Why is the movie titled, To Live?  What do you think it means in your life to live?
The move is titled, To Live, because it was the struggles that you go through in life, it was the things that has to be done, and it was just the way they had to live.  I think to live in my life isn't just to be alive but to struggle, and to go on and not dwel on things.

What lessons does the story teach us?  About family? About survival? About love? About government? About power? About communism?
Lessons that the story teaches us about family is that you have to stay close no matter what happeneds because in the long run, family is all you have.  It teaches us about survival because you have to do all that you  can if you want to live, you can't let other people bring you down and you can't let things get in your way.  It teaches us about love because if you truley love someone you can forgive them as long as they change and you know they've changed.  About government because the government is crule, but it helps you, and it can change, the people of the country don't really have much to say about it.  About power because not everyone has power and not everyone can get power, but if you are powerful you can have your picture set up everywhere and in peoples homes and people can worship you as if your some kind of god.  And about communism, I don't ever want to live in China because there I wouldn't have any say in anything at all, and I wouldn't like that.

How has this movie changed your understanding about Chinese people, culture, and politics? Do you believe China today has changed? How?
This movie hasn't changed my understanding about Chinese people because I believe they are full of culture and life and they basically live like anyone else after you break down to their living.  They love their family and they would do anything for them.  Their culture is still rich in history and art and foods and all of that great stuff.  But politics, I used to think they were sort of like us, but they are not.  Their government is something I would never want to be a part of.  I don't know if China has changed today because I don't know much about China still.  All I have done was watch a movie.

nFrom the movie, describe life in China through the 20th century. Include living conditions, food, music, pastimes, family relationships, etc.

Living conditions in China dont seem very good, for the common people in China they stay poor and are forced to work for the government, despite the fact that the Communist government of China says it puts its interests in the common people, it actually hurts them. Food in China
nHow did the characters of the husband and wife change through their lives and experiences? What changed the most? The least?

The husband in the movie became more responsible as the movie progressed, in the beginning he gambled too much and lost everything, once he got his family back he began to work harder and acted more like an adult. The wife left her husband in the beginning of the movie, but eventually she forgave him and went back to him so her children could be with their father. The government changed the family a lot, when they first lost their home they were upset, but when the Communists took over, they were thankful that they were a part of the lower class because they would not be killed by the government. The government was also responsible for the loss of their two children, if the government had not switched the roles of farmers and the educated then their daughter would not have died in the hospital and if their son did not have to go to work, then he would not have been killed. Despite everything they went through they stayed together and they were able to continue on with their lives.

  1. 20th century life in China was quite impoverished. They survived with practically none of the luxuries Western society had, and lived life relying on the bare minimums. Well maybe the condition wasnt this dire, but, their lives were far from the American standard. Despite this, they seemed to have a rich tradition concerning pastimes, music, and food, although many of these were heavily influenced by the Communist regime. The family relationships seemed very patriarchal although the women in the household had more freedom than I would have expected.
  2. You can tell through the years that the spouses sense of responsibility and wisdom grew. I believe that was the most eminent of changes. I think their love for their children changed the least. Even after the tragic deaths their love proved unconditional, whether six feet over or under the soil.
  3. I think the movie is titled To Live because it chronicles the lives of a family of Chinese peasants who, even though their life is riddled with tragedy, must ultimately retain the will to live, something they never did lose hold of. In my life to live means to survive, from day to day that is. Able to do the things Im blessed to do, and being happy all the while.
  4. The story taught us that family, survival, and love arent two poles apart. Each, although different, are elaborately intertwined and all are integral emotions of the human psyche. Love prevails is what I guess this movie is trying to convey. Love of his family ultimately drew the father from gambling, love kept the mother routinely by her departed sons grave; and love is what kept the family together after the daughters death, and the birth of her only child. Of government, my dislike of communism only grew. The revolutionary ideals although with good intent, resulted in many unnecessary deaths and breaches of rights.
  5. The movie helped shape my understanding of China actually, not just understand. Maybe it was the countrys secrecy, or more likely my own ignorance which is the reason why I really never had a true grasp of the Chinese lifestyle. In that department, the film was fantastic. I do believe China has changed today. It is no longer isolated. And like the Dalai Lama said once himself, [China] is part of the world community. Global interdependence, especially in terms of economics and environment make it impossible for nations to remain isolated.

From the movie, describe life in China through the 20th century.  Include living conditions, food, music, pastimes, family relationships, etc.
From the movie, life in China through the 20th century was harsh for the people. Their living conditions were quite cramped the least to say. Their food and music were traditional though such as the dumplings and such. The pastimes featured in the movie were based on how they lived back then such as the paper puppet-like shows and the gambling although gambling is still done today. Family relationships were much more family oriented than they are today. They respected each other even in their dire times of need and such and tried helping them to the best of their ability even if it seems like its not working.

How did the characters of the husband and wife change through their lives and experiences?  What changed the most?  The least?
The character of the husband changes through his life and experiences by becoming more of a decent person and actually caring about his family instead of gambling like at the beginning of the movie. The character of the wife doesnt change much through her life and experiences. Shes more of a static character.

Why is the movie titled, To Live?  What do you think it means in your life to live?

The movie is titled, To Live because I think that the general message of the movie is that no matter how harsh your life can be at the moment, theres always a reason to live and continue on. I think this because it shows so many scenes with deaths and such and each time, theres always someone or something that keeps saying to live on and not forget that there is a reason to live. I think that in my life, to live means to live my life to be happy, to do things that would benefit myself and others, and for the most part, to give your loved ones one more reason to live for.

What lessons does the story teach us?  About family? About survival? About love? About government? About power? About communism?

The lessons that this story teaches us is that life may be harsh, but theres always a reason for what happens. It teaches you to respect your family members always and even if theyre a complete pain in the butt sometimes, theyre still your family. It teaches people that theres always a reason to live for and to continue to survive on even in the harshest conditions. It teaches people to love one another and not let differences and past events get to each other and keep them from seeing the good in one another. It teaches that governments sometimes neglects the good of the people and instead tries to make it a better place to live when its a really grueling process. It teaches that with power comes great responsibility. It teaches that communism affects everyone whether the people want it or not.

How has this movie changed your understanding about Chinese people, culture, and politics?  Do you believe China today has changed?  How?
This movie changed some of my understanding about Chinese people, culture, and politics in that it broadened my knowledge of their history and such. I believe that China today has changed just a bit in that its power over their people has lessened with time just a tad.

the rest of my questions:

nWhy is the movie titled, To Live?  What do you think it means in your life to live?
The movie is titled To Live because the characters in the movie go through so much, but they continue with their lives and they are able to get past all of their problems, they dont dwell on the past. In my own life to live means to be happy and be with the people I love and care about, to do the things that make me the happiest.

nWhat lessons does the story teach us?  About family? About survival? About love? About government? About power? About communism?
The lesson the story teaches us is to never give up on the people we care about, that family was able to face the troubles brought about by death, poverty and Communist China and they still stayed together. The family in this movie survives unimaginable odds, they lose two children, their home, their wealth, their freedom and they still manage to live and be happy, for the most part. About love it teaches that to love unconditionally means that your relationship will last anything, despite any strains. I learned a lot about the Chinese government from this movie, before the movie I had known who Chairman Mao was and that he ruled China for many years, but I did not how brutal he was, about the public executions, putting the students and farming class in charge of the jobs once held by intellectuals.

nHow has this movie changed your understanding about Chinese people, culture, and politics?  Do you believe China today has changed?  How?
Yes, the movie helped me to better understand China. I did not know that much about China, I knew that they are still Communist and that they are also the country that the US uses for a majority of its imported products. I did not know about all that the Chinese people had to go through, the cruel, extremely oppressive government. The struggles their culture went through under Chairman Mao were also tremendous, Chairman Mao was able to create a revolution that almost wiped out their entire traditional culture. From what I saw in the movie and what little I know about history involving China, it was always a very closed, isolated country, today that is not completely the case. They are more involved in world affairs and people around the world know about some of the news that takes place in China, whereas when Chairman Mao first came into power, the rest of the world had no knowledge of what was actually taking place.
