RAFT Assignments (Extra Credit)

I have another simple option for extra credit, if anyone wants it.  Remember the RAFT assignments we did in the beginning of the year?  RAFT stands for role, audience, format and topic.  Basically, you choose a person in history, choose their audience, choose a format for their (written) presentation, and choose a topic for them to talk, write, draw, etc. about.  Well, you can do that here!  Use some of the examples found here if you want some ideas.  Depending on the quality and quantity of your work, I will add points to your lowest quiz grades.  I'd also like to encourage real comments and suggestions on the content of your work.  Feel free to add those as well.

Samantha Bailey

Role: George Bush

Audience: Iraq

Format: poem

Topic: fighting for our freedom

to protect my people,

i'm attacking yours,

like jackson did florida,

i must protect my own.

you pose a threat,

possibly hiding great weapons,

my distrust can not let me be,

and this is why your civilians will die,

for i must protect me.

I'll admit it, I'm no poet. And for the record, I'm not against the war. I'm stepping out of the box a bit, i think i display an argument on both sides.

I know this isn't an official comment, I just wanted to acknowledge the effort. Poetry is no easy thing, but this much better than anything I could've done.
Nice comparison to Jackson, too.

leet kudos, Samantha

Thanks, Samantha.  Next time, though, explain what your role is, who the audience is, what the format is and what topic you are addressing, ok?

Role: Sojourner Truth

Audience: A gathering of feminists in Akron, as well as white males in general.

Format: Poem

Topic: Women and slaves should have the same rights as white men.

“Ain’t I a woman?,”

I know some white men may say

That the cries of slaves don’t matter

And women’s opinions should just be brushed away

Well I’m here to state my opinion

That women should have rights

That are of the same equality of men

And should not just be thrown out of sight

Slaves should have some rights as well

For they are people too

I myself a former one

Those days were truly blue

No freedom to express myself

I really felt oppressed

When having to obey a “master”

And sometimes getting whipped in the chest

And as for women’s rights

We need to take a stand

To let the men of our land know

We won’t back down from our plans

Women have opinions too

Even though you might think not

We have some suggestions for bettering this country

Some rights are anxiously sought

So women, gather up your stubbornness

For we will not back down

These rights of voting, and owning land

Are essential of our demand

Do not lose hope

Keep up the fight

Do not back down

Stand tall and strong

My ambition is only to have equal rights

Among slaves and women, along with the whites

So hopefully you all understand

My view on these issues at hand

And maybe someday soon we’ll see

Some change in society

Hmm, I really enjoyed writing this...it was fun.  Some of the words I just put there so they would rhyme with what else was there, hehe.  I think I might do another one in the future.

Samantha, I really liked your RAFT...it was very interesting how you compared Bush's actions to Jackson's.  I also like how you put some reason's why Bush went into war.  I'll ask you a question so maybe this can be a real comment:  You said that you aren't against the war, what are your reason for supporting it?...I'm just curious.  Excellent job!

The Salem Witch Trials

Executioner

Salem

Poem

My Conscience

The Puritan ways

Can be mighty strict

If you don’t be careful

They’ll burn you to a stick

I execute witches

I know it sounds gory

But the church is my friend

The job gives me glory

But please don’t get me wrong

I’m not a true killer

My family needs food

No food and we’ll wither

My conscience has told me

That the church is all good

They have never been wrong

This should be understood

But sometimes I might think

Maybe the children lie

And you are innocent

And don’t deserve to die

But if all this is true

And the church is all wrong

I am a murderer

And should be thrown from a rung  ()

It is unfortunate

That Theocracy rules

If anyone heard this

I’d be hanged like you fools

The Reverend preaches

‘bout books of damnation

Witches suffer in hell

And few get salvation

Until evidence proves

That you are not guilty

Then you all shall be hanged

And I won’t feel sorry.

Wow tanya, i really enjoyed your poem.  It is very strong and i completely agree with every word.  I believe i have read this poem in school.  I love sojourner truth.  I really can't find a question to ask you.  Your poem is so perfectly to the point.  Maybe i'll find one later on.

Samantha, i think you are a wonderful poet.  Your poem definately portrays how a lot of people in this country think, never mind New Bedford High.  Just wondering, but what is your actual point of view on the war?
