You are the police chief in Jasper, TX after James Byrds murder. Answer questions in a TV interview about your feelings.

interviewer: what punishment do you think those men deserve?
officer:i think they deservelife in prison.because they not only murdered this poor man, they tortured him because of the color of his skin, and for no reason at all!

interviewer: Did you think Shawn Berry deserved a life sentence  even though he said he was an innocent bystander?
officer:of course, he deserved it because he could of prevented this whole attack he could of stopped the truck and kicked the other two men out. but instead he kept dragging this poor man with his pick up truck. so yes i belive hes just as guilty.

interviwer:what are your thoughts about this hate crime?
officer: i think that these are the wort types of murder cases because just to know that people do not like others because of there color of their skin is terrible. that this poor innocent man had to go through this suffering and his life being taking from him because someone doesnt like the color of his skin.

grandma, when i was followed at the store some sone kept staring at me watching my every move , i kinda felt uncomfortable like someone was out to get me. I know now how minorities feel, it doesnt feel to good. it hurts a little because  you feel like they think your going to do somthing wrong, when your just shopping. thats no way anyone should live, or be treated. i hate to think that someone is racist against me. They insisted on following me instead of the white man who was in front of me.i felt like i was different from them.

You are a Muslim American. In a letter to your family in Saudi Arabia, describe your feelings on internalized racism.

Dear family,

life here in the U.S is different than  what we are used too, over here we are concedered different i guess. ever since the 911 incident they make me feel ashamed of being who i am. Also, i feel like people are afraid of me ,like they look at me not as an american but as a terrorist because i'm from saudi Arabia. They seem like they hate iraq and because of the war they make me feel inferior because im muslim. alot of racism is going on around here and i wish they looked at me as a person , a muslim american and not as a potential terrorist.

do you think this was a hate crime?
I believe these crimes were hate crimes but thats not my decision to make thats going to be the courts.

Has anything liek this ever happened in the town of Jasper
No nothing like this has ever happened i think this is the worst crime thats ever happened and the people  who are responsible are TERRIBLE people

Do you think after this happened the people of the town will treat eachother a little better now?
No i dont think so i think everything will still stay the same which is sad because even if a crime this bad happens people arent willing to change how they are

Grandma,
Today i was shopping at the corner store and the owners kept watching my every move.  I felt very uncomfortable becuase i felt that i was going to be jumped or they were going to do something to me because of my race.  It is not a good feeling to be a minority, people are always looking at my every move like i am going to steel something from the store.  The are giving me a stereotype because of my race and its not fair. Nobody should be treated like this.

You are the police chief in Jasper, TX after James Byrds murder. Answer questions in a TV interview about your feelings.

Interviewer: What punishment do you think those men deserved?
Officer: I think that these men deserve the death penalty or if not that, a life sentence. They murdered him, but in the proccess they tortured him dragging him throught the back of the car. All this happened because of the mans color of his skin.

Interviewer: Do you think that anyone should have not deserved a life sentence?
Officer: No, Everybody that was involved should be sentenced, even Shawn Berry. He said that he was not part of the attack but he was there and he could have prevented it form happening. He could have knocked the other 2 men out of the car and stop the truck but he jsut stood in the car and watch the man suffer.

Interviewer: What are your thoughts on this hare crime?
Officer: I think that this is the worst type of attack or murder only because that this happened due to the mans color of skin. Im not saying that any hate crimes are right but this is pushing it too far. Anybody that does this is not a person with a heart.

Interviewer: What would have you done if you witnessed this crime happening?
Officer: If i witnessed this crime happening. I would have gotten in my car and ran that truck off the road to try to stop them. I would have done anything to stop that truck. I would have arrested all three of them and call a ambulance as fast as possible.

5. You are followed through a store while shopping. Explain your grandmother later what it feels like to be a minority.

Gram, i need to talk to you. I went shopping today, like i do all the time, but there was a new person working today. They made me feel funny, like they were watching every single thing that i did. Everytime i turned around, they were right there. They were nice enough, its not like they were being rude, but there were other people in the store too. They barely paid any attention to those people. I felt small and trapped, like i couldnt get away. I thought people were over treating people who didnt look like them differently, but i guess i was wrong. I just hope there are more trusting, good people then judgemental ones, and nothing like that happens to me again.

9. You are a Muslim American. In a letter to your family in Saudi Arabia, describe your feelings on internalized racism.

Dearest Family,
I hope you are well. America is different then what we all thought it would be. People act differently around me, even though they say they accept all different people. They seem warry, like they think im going to do something wrong. Even the other Muslims who have been here longer then I seem to shy away from me on the streets. I guess the way things happened during 911 automatically makes someone like me the bad person whos going to do bad things in America. I dont know if the United States is the place for me. I hope things change, and fast.

4. You are a Korean store-owner in LA, 1992. Write a letter to a relative in Korea concerning your thoughts on the LA Riots.

  Hello family.
Things have been crazy here lately. There have been many, many deaths, some of which have happened right outside my shop window. Just yesterday a black man was killed right in front of my eyes. Im afraid that I am next. Despite all the chaos, i have come to open my shop everyday like nothing was different, but its getting difficult. I am a foreigner, and people here seem to have a problem with people who are different. I dont feel like im different, but i guess i am moreso then i thought. If things keep up the way they are, I am either going to end up back home in Korea, or dead. Pray for me that its former, and not the latter...

1.I just am horrified that a fellow human being could have accomplished such a task with a soul within to do something like this you should feel as the victim felt in such a case of something so heinous the punishment should be equal the death penalty is not enough.

3. Mom Dad I know youre probably worried sick about me but this is what I have to do what kind of man is a man who does not try to make the world better? This opportunity in it self is greatness to defend people from tyranny and oppression to bring light back to a world thrown into darkness.  Wouldnt you want someone to come to your aid in time of crises its a life of conscience or nothing even if I lose my life and to have save only one other person then it was worth it no?

5.i hate it grandma why must I be sigled out every time always me and my friend and no one else for once I wished I wasnt different that I was excepted and trusted until I prove untrustworthy like every other person who isnt a minority already is.

8.  we as a modern people should not judge people into classes based on genes to a race anyone can have the same genes and those genes do not designate what race you are.

9. I am an American but if I walk into a store im made fun I walk down the street I am given dirty looks land of tolerance HA! A farce this country is so bias to the stereotypes enforced by music and television instead of believing what there heart would tell them the judge me without even knowing who I really am or where I come from.

2. You are a Emit Tills mother. Deliver his eulogy to a crowd of demonstrating white racists. Show them their errors.

My son Emit Till was kind and gentle, he would have never hurt another person. He did not deserve the treatment he received, he never meant any harm to anyone. Now because of the ignorance of a few my son is left without a future and I am without a son. I hope none of you ever have to know how it feels to lose a child, it is the deepest pain that anyone can ever feel, to know that you have to go on, while your child will never know what it is grow up and have children of their own. I do not seek revenge, I am not saying that I am not hurt and angered by this, but that will do me no good, I only hope that someday you will see the error of your ways.

4. You are a Korean store-owner in LA, 1992. Write a letter to a relative in Korea concerning your thoughts on the LA Riots.

This is the most frightening things that I have ever witnessed. The streets are engulfed with flames, people are beating on the innocent with no provocation. Stores are even having to make it known that they are not Korean owned just so they will not be attacked. I fear for my own life. The African Americans in LA are blaming Korean stores for taking their jobs away, we didnt mean for this riot to break out, we only wanted to make a living in America just as anyone else, we were not trying to hurt anyone.

6. You are Jewish. Write a letter to Steven Spielberg explaining your thoughts on Schindlers List and the Shoah Project.

Dear Steven Spielberg,
Thank you for making your film Schindlers List and creating the Shoah Project. It brings tears to my eyes when I see, to see what my granddparents and millions of other had to go through is touching. In both of them you are able to capture what little hope my grandparents were able to find and hold onto during the Holocaust. You have made it so this will never be forgotten, these stories have to be told and remembered, so that they are never repeated again. You have my eternal gratitude.
