I choose the group #3 assignment which deals with race.

1.race is a modern idea.
2.race has no genetic basics.
3.slavery predates race
4.race and freedom were born together
5.race justified social inequalities as natural
6.human subspecies don't exist
7.Skin color is only skin deep
8.most variation is within not between races.
9.race is not biological, racism is still real.
10.Colorblindess will not end rascism.

I believe that 100 years from now racism will still not be completely erased and forgotten, who knows, it might even become more harsh and more popular than it is today or was in the past.In my opinion, there is no way of telling for sure what the future will bring.

I think, you got a good head on your shoulders and it's obvious you realize the inequalities in this world.I understand and agree with what you wrote completely.

                     Race

1. Ancient societies did not divide people according to physical differences but according to religion, status, class and even language.
2. though out history societies have enslaved others, often as a result of conquest or war.
3. Are early enconomy was based largley on slavery.
4.  Throughout much of human history, societies have enslaved others, often as a result of conquest or war, even debt, but not because of physical characteristics or a belief in natural inferiority.
5. The U.S. was founded on the radical new principle that "All men are created equal." But our early economy was based largely on slavery.
6. Racial practices were institutionalized within American government, laws, and society.
7. Race is a powerful social idea that gives people different access to opportunities and resources.
8. Not one characteristic, trait or even gene distinguishes all the members of one so-called race from.
9. Unlike many animals, modern humans simply haven't been around long enough or isolated enough to evolve into separate subspecies or races.
10. Of the small amount of total human variation, 85% exists within any local population, be they Italians, Kurds, Koreans or Cherokees.

                                               Race 100 years ago

Racism is no longer "the" problem. If black Americans are to ever reach total equality in America, we must realize that fighting racism can no longer be our number one priority.

150 years ago, boundless racism resulted in tens of thousands of innocent black Americans being lawfully "whipped" or "beaten" by slave owners each and every day of the year. In the year 2000, in spite of allegedly committing several felonies prior to being "punched and kicked" by police officers, Thomas Jones may well end up a millionaire as a result of his NAACP sponsored lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia.

100 years ago, black Americans were often dragged to death behind the thundering hooves of horses ridden by sheet-covered Klansmen who were considered heroes in their white communities. Race is still going on till this day and hopefully in the future it will change.

The 10 facts that I learned at the tolerance website were;
***a hate crime is committed every hour. That's 24 hate crimes in a day.
***Everyday at least 8 blacks, 3 whites, 3 gays, 3 jews, and 1 latino become hate crime victims. -18 people per day-
***Every week a cross is burned.
***The greatest growth in hate crimes is against Asian Americans
***The second greatest growth is against the gay and lesbian community.
***Most hate crimes go uninvestigated
***Every MINUTE a college student somewhere hears racist, sexest, or homophobic words or images.
***Every year almost half a million  college students are targets of harmful slurs or assaults.
***When bias motivates an unlawful act-it is considered a hate crime.
***Most hate crimes are committed in the North and West.

In your everyday life, you can improve tolerance and respect diversity in 5 SIMPLE ways. By:
***Attending a play, or going to a play whose performers are a different ethnicity from you.
***When you hear slurs, let people know bias speech is always unacceptable.
***Imagine your life as another gender, race, or sexual orientation. Imagine how you would handle things.
***List all the stereotypes you can-positive and negative. Are these sterotypes reflected in your actions?
***Read a book or watch a movie about another culture.

Thats crazy, how every minute a college student somewhere hears racist, sexest, or homophobic words or images.

Not to long ago, remember... Jason Robida broke into a gay nightclub and shot people.  Here's a copy of a CNN transcript...

PHILLIPS: On a much more serious note, we're talking about a hate crime suspect now still on the loose, more than 14 hours after a rampage in a Massachusetts nightspot.

Today, police searched the home of 18-year-old Jason Robida, where they say they found Nazi paraphernalia anti-Semitic writings. Last night's attacks were in a gay bar in the town of New Bedford.

CNN's Deborah Feyerick brings us this report.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: There's an all-out manhunt under way for 18-year-old Jason Robida.

A captain here at the New Bedford Police Department says he's extremely violent and should be considered armed and dangerous. He has been on the run since just after midnight.

According to a bartender who was there, he says the 18-year-old came in, sat down, and asked him, is this a gay bar? Well, something about his Robida's tone of voice and demeanor made the bartender suspicious, so he asked for identification and then served him two drinks.

Well, after a couple minutes, Robida walked to a pool table in the back of the bar and then took out a hatchet and began hitting two people who were playing pool. Patrons thought a fight had broken out. They tried to break it up. The hatchet went flying. Robida pulled out a gun. And that's when he shot the two folks playing pool, as well as another man who had just exited the bathroom.

The bartender says it was a bloodbath.

PHILLIP, PUZZLES LOUNGE BARTENDER: He pulls out a handgun from out of his pocket, fires one shot directly up in the air, which got everybody's attention. And we all moved away. And he gets up and proceeds to shoot the first person that he attacked with a hatchet in the face, then turns to the second person that he attacked with a hatchet and shot him twice in the head.

At the same time, there was a customer coming from out of the bathroom, which is also in the back of the bar, behind the pool table, and he turned the gun on him, fires one shot at him, which went into his abdomen, in one end, out the other.

FEYERICK: The three victims are all in critical condition. They were airlifted to a Boston hospital.

The names of the victims, Robert Perry, Alex Taylor, and Luis Rosado -- it appears that Mr. Rosado and Mr. Robida Robert both lived on the same street here in New Bedford.

Now, a neighbor at Robida's home says that he would only go out at night and that, in her words, he hated everyone.

Now, at the time of the shooting, he was wearing dark black jeans with patches on them, along with a black hooded sweatshirt. Police say he's driving a 1999 green Pontiac Grand Am. And, right now, they have launched an all-out search to try to get him, again, warning everybody that he is extremely violent. He may have been injured in the attack.

So, he might seek medical help. And there is a potential that he is suicidal.

Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New Bedford, Massachusetts.

OOPS!! I forgot to write five suggestions.  Here they are:
1.People should take the time to get to know people who are different to them
2.People shouldn't be so quick to judge all those who are different to them.
3.I think if people were more informed of what's really going on in the world involving hate crimes. If more people knew, i think there would be a change in how people are.
4.Schools should make this a part of what they teach so that the students would be more aware of what is actually going on.
5.People just need to think how they would feel if they were the victims.  there is a saying that says don't do to others what you don't want done to yourself.  If people had this way of thinking they would think before they say something that might offend someone.

how are you going to get this message across to other people? how are you going to tell eveyr one that racist is rong?

Group 3

10 facts

1. Ancient societies did not divide people according to physical appearances, but according to religion, status, class, and even language.
2. Race has no genetic basis.
3. Slavery happened throughout history but not because of physical characteristics but often as a result of conquest or war.
4. Equality was a major new idea, but U.S. economy was based mostly on slavery.
5. Race justified inequalities as natural.
6. The genes from skin color have nothing to do with genes for hair texture, eyes shape, blood type, etc.
7. Race is still a powerful social idea that gives people different access to opportunities and resources.
8. Pretending race doesnt exist is not the same as creating equal opportunity.
9. Race is more then stereotypes and individual prejudice.
10. In 1924 the first Act to help immigration is passed.

Brief Description

I really dont know how American Society will be in 100 years because we are all different people and we think different too so I guess we are just going to have to wait and see. About the race issue it could chance but we dont know yet.

  • Nigerian People-------------They live in a tent back home that is on it's way to collaps.  They slept on pads that americans would probably excersize on.  They were kicked out of their home land because they opposed the Nigerian governments decision for a contrace with the Shell Corperation.  Most of the people who are refugee's don't know where they will go or what will happen to them in the furture, but they hope for the best.
  • Dominican People-------------People there live on baseball.  It's their life, their dream, thier only way out of poverty.  If the young men that go to the camps don't suceed, they don't get a chance to go to america and make a good living.  It's a lot of pressure on these men.
  • Indian Man------------------The man they talk about wants to come to america just to come to america.  He's doing it by getting a job there then going there then becoming a citezen.  it's just him and his wife.
  • Palestinian Wife-----------------She wanted to come to america because she was tiered of her life in Palestan and she wanted change.  She met a man who went to Palestan to visit family who was an american and they feel in love.  She's just waiting to finish school before she goes to America to be with him.
  • Mexican man----------------- He had a hard time getting his family to come to america becuase the host family only had room for so many people. But they made it and his wife was homesick.  i'm sure it happens all the time but they wanted a better life in a place where they can make it happen.
