What are people doing about genocide today? In the Darfur region of Sudan, rebel groups have displaced or killed hundreds of thousands.  Many around the world have mobilized efforts to deal with the crisis.  What is the fighting about?  How did it start?   Eyewitnesses have brought back horrible reports.  Millions have signed online petitions.  Some have used interactive exhibits on their website to raise awareness and money for victims.  Students have organized to form an anti-genocide coalition.  Human rights groups have monitored the situation and have reported it back to people and governments.  The Holocaust Memorial has established a Committee on Conscience to address genocide in the world today.  They have included a list of actions that people can do to fight injustice.  Many believe strongly that this genocide can be stopped.  Others have expanded their social activism to address other issues.  What do you think?  What can you do?  What should you do?  Answer these questions and describe five of the sites you have visited and your reactions to each [80 points].  Ask a question or provide a comment to another student’s post [20 points].

I think that it is great that people are trying contribute to this genocide and try to stop it from continuing. I also think that it is awesome that they are trying to contribute to the families that lost members. I can try to do what others have done, online petitions, online fundraisers, and be part of an anti-coalition. People can try to do the oppostite and do the right things instead of wrong. People are fighting because people think that they are better than everybody else and also racism is a big problem. It started out by a group of people disliking another group and went around shooting and killing people.

I honestly think that genocide is a disgrace and that it should never be repeated or thought of again. That is an event an history that happen that  No one should go through again. I dont think that the genocide solved anything ,  I also think that it just brouhght more problems and cause many innocent people to die. I think what should be done is other countries who know  other countries who are going through this i think they should being in there army and help them because every innocent person needs to be helped.  I strongly dont belive in innocent people dieing, its not fair its not fair that they were ment to die  but yet there life was taking away from them and there was notting they could do about it , this is why i belive other coutries should get involved and help because these innocent people dont need to die. I think studenets in our school should gather together and share their feelings and we should all possably spread the word show other coutries this is how kids TEENS feel today about genocide and that it should stop, because its not right . NOt at all, so if all the tennagers kids, adults everyone who belive that this was hard and got together we could stop this i do strongly belive that if we together as a group got together we could stop this.

I think fighting is about gaining power or even in some cases respect. While others may fight to expose their dominance over another to feel superior.

Fighting usually starts by disrespect, jealously, hatred, racism, envy, greed, love and revenge.

It's hard to decide but i think it's possible for genocide to be stopped but i would imagine it to be a extremely difficult task. The only solution i can think of is a very moving and powerful speech given that reaches out and touches the cruel hearts of alot of individuals, and teaches their hearts to love and that were all equal.
I clicked the link labeled interactive exhibits and was shocked by the number of casualties and in which some are even occurring as we speak. But i think it's great how others are donating money to the families who are struggling with the passing of a loved one I clicked the link that listed the list of some things that would help put an end to genocide, i guess it's a start but i think it's going to take alot more than what's on the list to dispose the acts of genocide.

I went to the anti-genocide coalition link and i liked the "Dont stand by. Stand up!"

At the Committee on Conscience link i read some pretty sad stuff about thousands of people dying and alot of woman who have been raped. I can't imagine over 2 million people being driven from their homes, as their villages got torched and property stolen; I don't know what I’d do in their shoes.

I went to the online petitions and i just think it good how people are actually trying to make a difference for the better and there trying different methods to do so.

What is the fighting about? The fighting is about who has more power and how much respect they will get when they do fight but at the end its not worth it because a lot of inocent people get killed for other peoples desicions.

How did it
start?  The conflict began in the arid and impoverished region early in 2003 after a rebel group began attacking government targets, saying the region was being neglected by Khartoum.
What do you think? I think that they should just stop the hatred and a lot of more people should speck up and not let all this happen specialy to innocent people.

What should you do? Just like a lot of students have done already i would be one of them who help the more people the better I would have online petitions i would have funraisers to make money and i would help with the anti-genocide coalition.

What can you do?
I can do what ever i can to help them and i can do a lot if i try and i have a lot more people behind me supporting what i am doing i can get foundationd and more groups there is a lot of things people can do if they tryed to do it.

I think the genocide is depressing. i feel bad for all the innocent people were killed for no reason. People wasn't respecting each other and their beliefs. It was a horrible war in history that should never be repeated again. It wasn't fair how all those people were killed, and the innocent families involved. I could start a fundraiser to help out and contribute money to the families in poverty that lost their family members. I should try to help by contributing money to the poor because i wouldn't wan't to be in the same situation that their going through, and i would hope if i was in that situation someone would help me out too.

3.) The interactive exhibits is cool how it shows the wall.

4.) The stopped website shows a lot of background information of what went down.

5.) The social activism shows the recently popular changes and qoutes. I like it.

Fighting between eachother is the competition of ones decision, and the ones who will gain the respect and power. It starts by a diagreement between two or more countries or people that don't agree with a situation that is occuring.

The fighting started how most fighting starts " I don't like how you're doing things."  It's all about somebody else thinking that another group of people aren't worth being alive anymore.  It is sad but true fact.  honestly the only you can do to stop it is an entire nations helping the ones being genocided and possibly kill a few hundred criminals ourselves.  Occurences like this can only be solved sadly more violence. You can't just talk these people out of thinking a certain way. It needs to be beaten out of them, or they need to have fear put in them so they won't commit the crime anymore.

i think that their fighting  for power an respect and are willing to do ANYTHING for it, even if it means murder. I also think that one side feels inferior to the other side. I think that the other nations should step in and help them. Just think wouldnt you want others to help America if we had a genocide?. I'm certain that you would.

What do you think?  What can you do?  What should you do?  Answer these questions and describe five of the sites you have visited and your reactions to each [80 points].  Ask a question or provide a comment to another student’s post [20 points].

The five sites I used were:

  1. I went into the Eyewitness site and found it so interesting how they had so many pictures of actual accounts of what happened.  It was crazy to see that these pictures were of something that really happened. It was jaw opening at the least. I especially found one of the pictures to be quite disturbing.  I am referring to the one about the one year old girl who had been shot at and had even punctured her lungs because of the bullet that went through that.  I couldn’t believe how something like that could actually happen. It was crazy!!
  2. Another very interesting site was the Interactive Exhibits site.  It was almost unreal at the number of people who were directly affected by the Genocide that occurred in Darfur.  I could not believe that so many could die from one act of hatred toward a group of people.  It was appalling to think that those people were members of families who most likely were also affected by this genocide.
  3. I also found the STAND site because it showed how young kids were getting involved in the cause to help out the people of Darfur.  This site explained that these young kids, mostly students, would set up anti-genocide meetings where kids would be able to get to know what exactly was happening in Darfur, Sudan.
  4. I was also really interested in the site called the Committee on Conscience. This site was a way of showing the public of what was going on in Darfur. I was interested in how they had a poster that was showing what was going on and I thought that was a very good way of people knowing how it was affecting the people and families that were over there.
The Change.com also showed different little sections that contained things that needed to be changed in the world.  I like the way it was set up and how it was put in a way that was very catchy to the eye.

I liked the way all of these sites showed a different way of letting people know what was actually going on. What these different sites showed us is about all that we can do for now.  It’s not going to be something that will be done overnight but something that we can all work towards so that something could be done. I would do exactly what these people are doing because it takes a lot of courage to do what they did.

Genocide is a terrible thing and more needs to be done in order to prevent it. The people who commit these crimes need to be punished for their actions and more aid needs to be given to the victims of genocide. People can help victims by donating their time or money, they can also stay informed about what is going on around the world and making sure others know as well. The more that people know about the genocide that occurs around the world, the more pressure there will be for something to be done about it. To help end the genocide, I could read more about Darfur and talk to the people that I know about what is going on so they would know how terrible this is and how many people have been killed in this genocide.

1) Interactive exhibits was a website that showed numbers that represented the people who have been killed in the Darfur genocide so far and it allowed people to donate to the victims. I was shocked to see the number of people who have been killed in Darfur and I think that by showing the numbers in that way it makes people think about it more and realize how bad it is, rather than just hearing someone talk about it.
2) I think that the online petition is a good way for people to show that they know what is going on and that they want something to be done about it.
3) The pictures on the Darfur Eyewitness website were horrible, it was shocking to see pictures of bodies on the ground and piled up and to see areas just being burnt to the ground.
4) I liked the idea of the student coalition to help the Darfur genocide because it is a good way for kids to stay informed about what is going on in Darfur. A lot of people think that kids don’t care about things like this but it is a good way for kids to learn about this and get involved in helping the people in Darfur.
5) I thought that the list of actions that people can use to fight injustice around the world were good because they were things that seemed pretty simple and that regular people could do, but they would help make a difference.

I agree with what you said-helping to stop genocide won't ever be done overnight but its not completely impossible and some of the steps that could help end it are kind of simple so there's no reason why more people can't get involved in this.

What do you think?
Genocide is terrifying.  It makes me sick to my stomach to think that anyone would kill over differences in people.
What can you do?
I dont really know what we can do. It might influence other people to try and put an end to genocide, but it wouldnt stop it from occurring. It's people's closed-minded opinions that keep things like genocide and racism around. If we could change their minds, we would do it in a heartbeat. The only things we can really do is to fight for the ones who are being murdered.
What should you do?

We should also raise the awareness of genocide around the world.  We could use things like, for example, Myspace. It's something that the youth is familiar with and people are using around the world. So, if everyone put something on Myspace about what is happening in the world, we could raise awareness to the youth around the world.

Five sites visited and reactions:
Wikipedia.org- Dafur Conflict
When I read the info on this site, i was shocked.  400,000 people have been killed so far in the Dafur genocide.  The mass media referred to it as an "ethnic cleansing".
Savedafur.org-It's Time for Plan B (petition)

When i went to this site, i wasnt sure what to expect. i just started to click different things and i came across a petition. This petition is to try and force Bush to end the genocide in Dafur. The plan is to stop the fight before more innocent people lose their lives or homes. I immediately signed the petition.
Dafurwall.org
This was the most impressive site i've found so far.  There is a list of numbers up to 400,000; each number represents one person killed in the genocide.
ushmm.org- dafur eyewitness
To be sompletely honest, i could only look at this site for LITERALLY 1.5 seconds. All i saw were pictures of dead bodies.  It's a huge reality check.  You never really understand these things unless you've witnessed it. Seeing these pictures made me witness it, and i feel absolutely sick.
ushmm.org- comittee of conscience
This site just confirmed my fears of this genocide. after seeing the photographs from the eyewitness, i've though more about what really happens and how this isnt just something you see in the movies. this site explains what's going on and to what extent.

I think genocide should be stopped because its a terrible think to be happening.

A country should not allow this to happen. This is not the way to die and make people suffer. Its very good to see that people are trying to stop it from ever happening again to anyone. Many innocent people have already died from this horrible crime and theres no need for more people to die like this.

What is it about???? answer: ther eis a militia group called teh devils on horseback who rage war on the Fur zugawa people.

HOW DID IT START???? ANSWER: it started over
environmental calamity, political opportunism and regional politics

i believe it is really worthwhile to have petitions going and to have websites making people aware of what is goign on in this world. Genocide need to be exteriminated because all it is accomplishing is pain and suffering for a select group of people. Honestly what are u gunna get outta killin tons of innocent men, women, and children? If i had teh proper funds i would start sending money to needy families who have been affected by genocide... but sadly im only a middle class citizen. maybe when grow older i can do this.

I think genocide is one of the most awful things a group of people should go through.  What we can do is exactly what we should do.  I think our country should get involved and try to stop genocide in other countries. I also think they should start out by raising awareness.  Nothing is going to get done if no one really knows whats going on.  Once people know and understand the situation more people would want to help and do something about it.

The first sit I visited was the anti-genocide coalition and I really agreed with that.  That is a very effective way of getting more people involved in the fight against genocide.  I feel all high schools, including ours should step up and join the other 600 schools already involved.  It is a very big step to try and make a difference and maybe change the world.

Secondly I looked at the online petitions and how many people have written and stated that they want to make a change.  If more people researched and got involved there probably wouldnt be such a big issue on genocide because it would have been terminated at the beginning.

The interactive exhibits are also good to stop genocide,  I like this because it not only wants to stop it they are already trying to help the victims and try and repair the damage that has already been done.  This site has stepped up the most to try and really help the issue on genocide.

It is important to have the site of eyewitnesses.  It is one thing to just hear about it, but it is another to actually show the people want is really going on and show us how many people it really is effecting and how crazy it really is to have to go through that.

I also think it is good to have a site with a list of actions because someone may want to help but dont know where to start or how to begin.  In my opinion this site was also a really effective one.

I think that genocide is a horrible thing. It should be stomped out as soon as it starts. I should be helping as much as I can to aid those suffering from a genocide.
1. On the www.savedarfur.org site, I was amazed to see how many people had signed the petitions and stuff. It was quite sad reading one of the blogs on how they didnt want the UN to come help because it would more suffering of their people.
2. On the Wikipedia article about the fighting in Darfur, I was shocked at the number of people who died. It said it was around 200,000 - 400,000. That is 200,000 - 400,000 too many. The picture of the camp was pretty sad too. Tents made of rags and stuff dont make for much of a good shelter. :(
3. On the www.news.bbc.co.uk site, it was talking about how the conflict started and such. Its a sad day when people think that their government is trying to overthrow its own people in favor of just another certain culture.
4. On the www.standnow.org site, It was pretty great reading about how so many different high schools and colleges are doing quite a lot to help towards trying to stop the genocide in Darfur.
5. On the www.darfurgenocide.org site, it talks of how people should sign the petition to show their support in favor of arresting the 3 men associated with the genocide. I agree with what they said about how the governments should take a hand in this and put a stop to the genocide happening.

I agree with how you said that they would do anything to get what they want even committing the most heinous crime of murdering another. It's sad to think that there are people in the world who would stop to such levels just to gain something that doesn't seem much important anymore in the end. And that's also a good point about doing what you would want others to do for you. ^.^

I think that it's ridiculous on how there are still acts of genocide going on in the world today. I could speak out and join one of the groups that are already attacking this issue.
The 1st website that I visited was the BCC News- Q&A: Sudans Darfur conflict. I cant believe that the US Congress and the former US secretary of state said that genocide was taking place. Then the UN investigation team said that while war crimes had been committed that there was no intent of to commit genocide. Thats BS because obviously there is acts of genocide, they are freaking kill one group of humans
The 2nd website that I had visit was the Darfur Eyewitness and I was shock to see that there was a displace person camp and the UN is saying that there is no intent of genocide. Also to see a little girl shot in the side of body was horrible.
The 3rd website that I went to was Darfur wall. Its nice to see people coming together and donating to help those in need.
The 4th website I went to was the stand up, take action website. I love to see that there are good people out there willing to stand up for what they believe in and to stop the killing. Your activism challenges the conscience of the world.
- Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi
The 5th website I visited was Darfur Genocide. It is time for the US and European governments to stop appeasing genocide. I cant believe that still the US is not doing anything about these issues.

You girls are both right, it's so horrible that this is still happening in the world today, doesn't anyone in the government have enough sense to say hey maybe we should help those people out over there instead of spending all our money in Iraq. Lets do some positive things and help out those who are in desperate need.
