Hey Melanie maybe u should explain the importance of these inventions during their time frame and how they shaped the upgrade of technology today? For instance the Ford Automobile was the first car and shaped way for other people to create cars for today and a friendly competition to Ford. Good to see you at it though =).

"Jesse W Reno

the good thing about escalators is that they never breakdown. they only temporarily become stairs.

You mentioned Eli Whitney and his cotton gin, but what about the effect his invention caused on slavery.  The cotton gin made the south very rich because it increased cotton productions, but also increased the "need" for slavery.  I know that the south really didn't need slavery, however, the southern planters thought they did to maintain their huge profits.  The slave trade my have been ended, however, that didnt stop slave sellers in the US from auctioning off more and more human flesh.  Slave woman who gave birth to 11 or more children were called "rattlin' good breeders" and their children were sold off as slaves after they turned 10 years old.  Slaves were being used in larger amounts down south... increasing the slavery issue in the US.

Okay, so I didn't know who invented a lot of these things...like Elisha Graves Otis and the elevator brake, if that hadn't been invented then elevators would be very unsafe...and Johan Vaaler inventing the paper clip lol...those are fun to play with when you're bored ;)

Haha, I did! At the Galleria Mall one time the escalator 'temporarily became stairs,' except we couldn't use them, and had to go all the way around to the other end to get back to the top floor...only to walk to the other end to leave the building -.-

Have you ever been to the Coca-Cola factory in Atlanta?  It is mad fun and you get to try different sodas made by the Coca-Cola company from around the world.  Also, there used to be trace amounts of cocaine in Coca-Cola.

*is it true that in the early years of coca-cola that this soft drink actually had traces of cocaine in it? Creating an addiction to its consumers is a pretty crafty way to profit.

"Coca-Cola did once contain an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass but after 1904 Coca-Cola started using, instead of fresh leaves, "spent" leaves - the leftovers of the cocaine-extraction process with cocaine trace levels left over at a molecular level."  - Wikipedia.com coca-cola

its pretty much the same as cigarette companies do they get their customers addicted and watch their profits rise.

Dr. Richard J. Gatling invented the Gatling (machine) gun during the 1860's. the U.S. Government never bought the guns for use in the war because of several mechanical problems it had but Union General Benjamin Butler bought twelve and used them on the petersburg front. Both sides were awestruck at its ability to fire hundreds of rounds in a short period of time.

by the way, just to be fair i got this joke from mitch hedburg. he died a few years ago from a heroin overdose.....but he was pretty funny. i'd feel bad taking credit for it.

george washington carver-inventor of peanut butter! much of Carver's fame was based on his research and promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops as both a source of their own food and a cash crop. His most popular bulletin contained 105 existing food recipes that used peanuts.

eli whitney-inventor of the cotton gin, which called for more slaves in the south during the 1800s. Helped increase tension leading to the civil war.
In the U.S., Eli Whitney saw the potential benefit of developing "interchangeable parts" for the firearms of the United States military, and thus, around 1798, he built ten guns, all containing the same exact parts and mechanisms, and disassembled them before the United States Congress.

ah inventors..

so who really invited the lightbulb/electricity.. would that be thomas edison or benjamin franklin?

Edison is credited today as an inventor of the nineteenth to early twentieth century, who invented the phonograph, and...the long lasting lightbulb. (also, the first research labratory)

Franklin's kite experiment was an important philosophy in discovering electricity as well.  However, since Franklin was around during the eighteenth century, much earlier, it is safe to say that his experiment aided Edison and other inventors in their ongoing projects.
