The Jeffersonian Republic (1800-1812)

The presidential race of 1800 was the first race in which the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans functioned as 2 separate political parties. The race was between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson came out victorious and during his presidency, over-saw many significant changes to the country.

-Judiciary act of 1801 à one of the last important laws passed by the federalist congress. It created 16 new judicial offices. President Adams signed in midnight judges the last day in office.

-Marbury v. Madison à exercised judicial review from the Supreme Court

-Louisiana Purchase à acquisition by the US from the French that bought western territories that doubled the size of the United States in 1803.

-Lewis and Clark Expedition à expedition set up by Jefferson to explore the Pacific Northwest.

-Embargo Act à a series of laws passed by Jefferson to declare economic war against Britain and France in order to stay out of foreign affairs.

-Madison elected preident - 1808

Jill, for the Louisiana purchase there was great controversy between the Federalist and the Anti-federalist on whether or not the purchase itself would be unconstitional. Now was it? or did the purchase obey the constitu confused

Jefferson has a strict interpretation of the constitution, which made the Louisiana Purchase very controversial because normally he would not go for such a choice. The Federalists strongly opposed the purchase, favoring close relations with Britain over closer ties to Napoleon, believing the purchase to be unconstitutional. The Federalists also feared that the political power of the eastern coastal states would be threatened by new western states. There was also great concern with the issue of slavery because speculation caused people to think that some of the new western territories would turn into slave-holding states.

Jefferson, who was all about following a strict interpretation of the Constitution, broke that rule. The Louisianna Purchase was only Unconstitutional to democratic republicans... in opposition to the Federalist Party. Therefore, Jefferson's agreement to purchase the Louisianna territory was unconstitutional to him.

Lewis and Clark were sent to explore the land to see exactly how far America was. Some say this led to the creation of the idea of Manifest Destiny. It was basically just a journey to see what they aquried from this purchase and what resources they recieved.

The way Curt put it makes the Louisianna Purchase sound kinda crazy actually. I mean, imagine going on a journey to explore what you bought, not knowing what lay out there or what you were in for? I think the Louisianna Purchase was a pretty bold step or bargain to take, even though they probably knew they were in for something good. If that made any sense at all.

It was a pretty big gamble, concidering the reports we got back from mountianmen who had been out there of crazy sorts of animals that didn't really exist. But, doubling the size of America was a pretty big incentive, so I guess they didnt really care about like, man-eating bears and stuff. lol

The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States at that time. It was purchased for $15 million dollars, and the territory stretched from the Gulf of Mexico in the South to Ruperts Land in the North, and from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west.

Why do you think Adams waited until midnight until he passed the law about the judicial offices? Do you think the Louisiana Purchase was consitutional and necessary?

James Madison was actually elected in 1809! He contributed a lot in the writing of the constitution. He, along with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, wrote the Federalist Papers, which were all for ratifying the constitution. He later became known as the "Father of the constitution"!!!! Just thought that was something cool to note out!! biggrin

THe main purpose was about the commisions being withheld from judges but that is not the important part. This case set up the system of jusical review - REMEBER THAT!!!! - and that is why it is important.
