Kentucky served as a buffer and was a testament to the idea that not all of the South was aginst the North 100%, just most of it, a thought which may have helped if not in reality than in the minds of the Union soldiers.
Elizabeth Blackwell founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children in 1857 since most hospitals wouldn't allow her to work there, she also founded a Woman's Medical College in 1868.

This was part of lincoln's Anaconda Plan but it was also to make sure that the South wasnt able to go to Britain and France for help. Remember that whole affair with the Union seizing Confederats going to Britain... The blockade pretty much was a destructive blow to the South becuase they had nothing for food or weapons.

Why was the economy the South's greatest weakness at this time? What were the border states during this time?
Mechanical Reaper- Invented by Cyrus McCormick in 1831. Although he liberated farm workers from hours of rigorous labor, this also gave the people less jobs. One reaper automatically bound the bundles of wire together. Later on this invention was replaced by a self-propelled machine that could be operated by one man that cut, gathered, threshed, and sacked the grain mechanically.

Did the Union really believe that England would aid the South? Even though they did have strong commerce ties, I think the fact that England was anti-slavery would have been enough to keep them out of the conflict, if not for the sake of abolition, but because they didnt want to get into a fight that could prove to be more than they bargained for.
The Union's blockade was not only a hard hit to the Southern economy, but it also showed other countries that the Civil War going on in America was more than a fight for dominance over another part of the country, but a fight for freedom that the Union was not prepared to lose at any cost.
