                             The War of 1812

The War of 1812 was fought between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and its colonies, especially Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Bermuda.  The war was fought from 1812 to 1815.  So now that you know where the war was, how long it lasted, and who fought in it,  let's talk about how and why this all came about.  Britain was at war with France at the time and therefore imposed a series of restrictions to impede American trade with France.  America declared the restrictions as illegal under international law and eventually declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812, beginning the "War of 1812."  However, America had other reasons including outrage at the impressment of thousands of American sailors into the British navy, frustration at British restraints on neutral trade, and anger at British military support for hostile Indians blocking American settlement of the OLd Northwest which by treaty with Britain belonged to the U.S.  The war consisted of both successful and unsuccessful strategies and land and naval attacks including America's attack on British merchant ships, hurting their commercial interests in the West Indies.  The war had the effects of both uniting Canadians and uniting AMericans most closely than either population had been prior to the war.  Canadians remember the war as a victory by avoiding conquest by the AMericans, while Americans celebrated victory in a "second war for independence."  Therefore, although outcome of the War resulted in unity, it is unclear to an outsider as to who exactly "won," however, to an AMerican, it was a war fought to victory, and to a Canadian it was likewise.biggrin

So basically the only reason why the US got involved then was through conflicts between Britain and France? That must have stunk for the US who did nothing wrong, and then now the British were putting restrictions on American trading with France, which would get the US mad because its not like we did anything. Now we wouldnt get any business.

Didnt the US ... like... stop all trading with European countries.  This caused a panic right?  And everyone couldnt believe how dumb Jeffersons decision was.  The US wasnt that strong.

Kelsey, you said, " The war consisted of both successful and unsuccessful strategies and land and naval attacks including America's attack on British merchant ships, hurting their commercial interests in the West Indies." What other successful and unsuccessful strategies and land and naval attacks were there?

The war was fought in Canada and Bermuda.  They are so far apart, it must have been like two different wars.  What came out of the war and why was it fought?
