Spanish America WarThe Spanish-American war lasted from April 1898- August 1898. The cause of the war was due to Spain's inability to resolve the problems in Spainish-controlled Cuba, after America demanded they do something to end the conflicts. Many things provoked the war, such as the suspicious explosion of an American battle ship, the "Maine" in the harbor of Havannah. One major cause of tension was the use of "yellow journalism" by American newspapers, which fabricated stories on the war and the way the Spanish were going about their defences. These fabricated stories enraged American citizens, who believed they were true, and led to more tension among the people and the government, whom they believed were not handeling the enemy forcefully enough. Eventually, America won major battles in the Phillipines and Cuba, and The Treaty Of Paris was created to end the conflict. Thanks to the Treaty, the U.S gained control of Spanish colonies in Puerto Rico, the Phillipines and Guam. Eventually, America took over Cuba and ended the conflicts that had been the cause of the war. By 1902, America gave the island of Cuba it's independace from Spain for good.

Thanks Sarah.  Can you post this in the 'Events: Spanish American War' thread?  Also remember that even thought Cuba was assured its independence, it still remained under an American 'sphere of influence' all the way up to 1959 and still was covered by the Platt Amendment as far as matters of foreign policy were concerned.
