Post 10 of the most important events in the decade assigned.  Explain each briefly (descriptively and in context of other events, individuals and issues of that time).

ok, so this isn't brief and it's not exactly 10 things.

1810: (May 1) Macons Bill No.2 was passed. It was intended to motivate Britain and France to stop seizing American vessels during the Napoleonic Wars. The law lifted all embargoes with Britain or France. The tin can was invented during the war with Napoleon in 1810.

 

1811: (January 3) An unsuccessful slave revolt led by Charles Deslandes in St. Charles and St. James, Louisiana took place.(November 6) The Battle of Tippecanoe took place, where forces led by Gov. William Henry Harrison of the Indiana Territory and forces of Tecumsehs growing American India confederation.

 
1812: (Feb. 11) Massachusetts governor Elbrige Gerry invents gerrymandering, a form of redistricting in which electoral district or constituency boundaries are manipulated for an electoral advantage. (April 4) President James Madison enacted a ninety-day embargo on trade with the United Kingdom. (April 30) Louisiana is admitted as the 18th U.S. State. (June 18) War of 1812 begins between the United States and the United Kingdom.
 


1813: (April 8) Colonel James Ball arrives at Fort Meigs (in Ohio) with 200 dragoons. (April 27) Battle of York: U.S. troops raid, destroy, but do not hold the capital of Ontario. (May 27) In Canada, U.S. forces capture Fort George. (June 6) Battle of Stoney Creek: A British force of 700 under John Vincent defeat and American force three times its size under William Winder and John Chandler. (July 5) Three weeks of British raids on Fort Schlosser, Black Rock and Plattsburgh, New York begin.(Aug. 5) Tecumsehs Indian force ambushes Thomas Van Hornes 200 Americans at Brownstone Creek, causing them to flee and retreat. (Aug.16) American General William Hull surrenders Fort Detroit without a fight to the British Army. (Aug. 19) USS Constitution defeats the British frigate Guerriere off the coast of Nova Scotia. (Sept.10)Oliver Hazard Perry defeats a British fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie. (Oct. 5) William Henry Harrison defeats the British at the Battle of the Thames, native leader Tecumseh was killed in battle. (Oct 9) American forces capture two British ships in Lake Erie; HMS Detroit and HMS Caledonia. (Oct. 13) Battle of Queenston Heights: U.S. forces under Gen. Stephen Van Rensselaer are repulsed from invading Canada by British and native troops led by Sir Isaac Brock.(November) James Madison defeats De Witt Clinton in U.S. presidential election. (Dec. 29) British Soldiers burn Buffalo, NY. 
 


1814: (March 27) In northern Alabama, U.S. forces under Gen. Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. (May 5) The British attack Fort Ontario at Oswego, New York. (July 5) Battle of Chippewa- American Major General Jacob Brown defeats British General Phineas Riall at Chippewa, Ontario. (July 24) General Phineas Riall advances towar Niagara Falls, Ontario to halt Jacob Browns American invaders. (July 25) Battle of Lundys Lane- Reinforcements arrive near Niagara Falls, Ontario for General Rialls British and Canadian force, and bloody, all-night battle with Jacob Browns Americans commencse at 18.00; Americans retreat to Fort Erie. (Aug 24) British troops occupy Washington, DC, setting buildings on fired, including the Capitol. (Aug 28) Alexandria, Va offers to surrender to the British fleet without a fight. (Sept 11) The Battle of Lake Champlain took place. (Sept 13) The bombardment of Fort McHenry at Baltimore.(Nov 7) Andrew Jackson seizes Pensacola, Fl. (Dec 15) Hartford Convention convened, in which New Englands opposition to the war reached the point where secession from the U.S. was discussed. The end of the war with a return to the status quo ante bellum (as things were before the war). (Dec 24) The Treaty of Ghent was signed.
 


1815: (Jan 8) Battle of New Orleans (February) Hartford Convention arrives in Washington DC. (Feb 6) New Jersey grants the first American railroad charter to John Stevens.
 


1816: (April 11) In Philadelphia, the African Methodist Episcopal Church is established by Richard Allen and other African-American Methodists, the first such denomination completely independent of White churches. (June 19) Battle of Seven Oaks between Hudson Bay and Northwest fur-trading companies, near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (Aug 24) The Treaty of St. Louis is signed in St. Louis, Missouri. (November) James Monroe defeats Rufus King in U.S. presidential election. ( Dec. 11) Indiana is admitted as the 19th U.S. state. (undated) Second Bank of the United States is founded. 
 


1817: (March 3) The Alabama Territory is created by splitting the Mississippi Territory in half, 9 months before Mississippi becomes a U.S. state. President Madison vetoes Calhouns Bonus Bill. (March 4) James Monroe succeeds James Madison as the President of the United States of America.(April 15) The first American school for the deaf opens in Hartford, CT. (April 28) The Rush-Bagot Treaty was signed, whichh provided for the demilitarization of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain, where many British naval armaments and forts still remained. (Nov 20) The first Seminole war begins in Florida. (Dec 10) Mississippi is admitted as the 20th U.S. State, separated from the Alabama Territory.
 


1818: (April 4) The U.S. Congress adopts the flag of the United States as having 13 red and white stripes and one star for each state (20 stars) with additional stars to be added wheneve a new state is added to the Union. (Dec 3) Illinois is admitted as the 21st State.
(undated) Andrew Jackson invades Florida.
 


1819: (Feb 15) The United States House of Representative agrees to the Tallmadge Amendment barring slaves from the new state of Missouri, the opening vote in a controversy that leads to the Missouri Compromise. (Feb 22) Spain cedes Florida to the United States-Adams-Onis Treaty. (May 22) The SS Savannah leaves port at Savannah, GA on a voyage to become the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. (Dec 14) Alabama is admitted as the 22nd U.S. state. ( undated) Panic of 1819, the first major financial crisis in the U.S. Physician Dr. Thomas Sewall was convicted on multiple counts of grave robbing in Massachusetts. McCulloh v. Maryland case. Dartmouth College v. Woodward case.

1820: (Feb 6) 86 free African American colonists sail from New York City to freetown, Sierra Leone. (March 3 & 6) The Missouri Compromise becomes law. (Marcj 15) Maine is admitted as the 23rd U.S. State. (April 6) Joseph Smith, Jr. at age 14 was visited in a vision by God and Jesus Christ known by Latter-day Saints as the First Vision. (May 11) Launch of HMS Beagle the ship that would later take Charles Darwin on his scientific voyage. (Dec 3) U.S. presidential election, 1820- James Monroe is re-elected. (undated) Robert Owen devises the labour voucher (a device proposed to govern demand for goods in socialism, much as money does under capitalism.)

was the War of 1812..=) this was between the united states and the united kingdom establishing the fact the the united states is a soveriegn nation fully capable for handling their own affair with out the UK Interfering.

1810- third national census records 7,239,881 people

1810- John Jacob Astor founds the Pacific Fur Company. In 1811, this company establishes a trading post at Astoria at the mouth of the Oregon River.  Astor loses this post during the War of 1812. 

1812- State of Louisiana enters the union

Just to extend a little more on the War of 1812....

The US was hardly involved with the actual confict that was occuring in Europe.  We only truly got involved after our ships were being siezed. 

I believe Jefferson was President at the time and everyone in America was shocked at his bold decision to create the embargo against France and England.  He thought our economy was tough enough to recieve little imports from our main traders.  This through the economy into panic.  However, it benefited our country in the long run after the North adapted and greatly industrialized.

Okay, so hopefully this wasn't already in here...and nice job on the info. Crystal

1818 - The 49th parallel is agreed upon as the border between the United States and Canada from Lake of the Woods westward to the Rocky Mountains, with joint occupation of the Oregon Territory.

1819 - The United States renounces all claims to Tejas in a treaty with Spain that brings Florida under American control.
