1950
  1. War in Korea:  occuring between June 25, 1950, and a ceasefire on July 27, 1953, was a war fought in Korea that was divided by the post-World War II Soviet and American occupation zones, with large-scale participatioin by other countries.  THe War began with the invasion of capitalist South Korea by forces in communist North Korea in 1950 and ended as a stalemate between the sides in 1953.   2. Confirmation of Hydrogen Bomb Programme by President Truman.
  3. Credit card system introduced in America.
  4. Mass production of computers began.
  5. First organ transplant takes place.
  6. The world population numbers 2.52 billion. (World population now estimated at  6,442,515,501 (CIA))

1951

The Korean War continued and the McCarthy Hearings were getting worse. 

1952

  1. New USA president Dwight Eisenhower elected.
  2. Churchill became Prime Minister in UK under Conservatives.
  3. FBI Communist Witch Hunts were at their height.  People were being interogated by the FBI.
1953

1. McCarthy witch hunt hearings took place in USA.
2. A new regime took over in Russia when Stalin died. 3. Dupont began commercial production of Dacron at a plant in North Carolina, to produce Dacron (polyester)

1954
Civil Rights Movement begins!
- The Supreme Court rules on the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kans., unanimously agreeing that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional.  The decision overturns the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling that sanctioned "separate but equal".  It was a victory for NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall and also the nation's first black justice.

1954 continued...
Emmett Till is kidnapped and brutally beaten, shot, and dumped in the Tallahatchie River.  The case becomes a cause of the civil rights movement.

1955
Civil Rights continues: NAACP member Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat at the front of the colored section for a white passenger and is arrested.  The montgomery black community launches a bus boycott that lasted for more than a year.

1956
-The bus boycott ended when the bus company desegregated Dec. 21, 1956.
-Martin Luter King appears and helps establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of which King is made the first president.   He organizes civil rights movement based on principles of nonviolence and civil disobedience.
-also Elvis Presley becomes ultra famous now.

1957

-Sputnik 1 the first satellite to orbit the earth launched into space by the Russians.  The space age becomes a reality.

-European Economic Community established and Channel tunnel (the Chunnel) between England and France seriously proposed.
-Civil Rights continue:  The formerly all white central high school learns integration is easier said than done in Little Rock, Ark.  President Eisenhower sends federal troops and the national guard to intervene on behalf of the african american students and protect them from the raging mob outside the school everyday. 
-Also, the non violent protest from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College begin a sit in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter.  Many were arrested but they really got their point accross.

1958
-NASA is founded
-Civil Rights continue

1959
-Castro took power in Cuba and became the new Dictator.-Alaska and Hawaii join the USA and become states of North America.
-Civil Rights

1960
-Almost 60% of American families owned their own homes.
-By the end of the fifties most American households owned their own car and washing machine. -Approximately 90% of Americans owned at least one television set.-However, by the end of the 1960s there was still a large portion of Americans who suffered from poverty... about 1/4 of the population.  The other 3/4s did not really recognize it.  The majority of people who suffered from poverty were minorities-The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee is founded at Shaw University

 1952 ......Eisenhower capaigned against the Truman's failures of "Korea, COmmunism and Corruption" promising to go there and end the war

1954 ...."massive retaliation" was annouced eschewing the costly ground force characteristics of Trumans.. This massive retaliation was basically a nuclear straegty to attack in a much greater force

also in 1954....Brown Vs. Board of Education of Topeka  outlawed segregation public education facilities for blacks and whites

1957 - the Governor of Arkansas used the national gaurd to make sure that school intergation does not happen at Little rock Centeral High school

1952- The U.S. explodes the first hydrogen bomb

1957- This was the peak of the birthrate in the U.S. following the war

First organ transplant takes place.

It's amazing how routine these operations are these days.  What kind of organ and what was it needed for?  Do you know what doctor performed the operation? And since it was a new procedure, it was probably for someone pretty important, don't you agree?

I'm not sure what organ it was.  It was just on this website for the 50s that I found.  I put it in my timeline because it shows how prosperous the 50's really were.  I mean, economy was great, the middle class was growing, women were playing larger roles, and medical science was increasing immensely.  This put the US ahead of many other countries.... i think.

Communist North Korea decided to attack South Korea because they wanted to spread Communism and take over the South.

Okay, mostly fun facts because Katie covered a super lot. ;)

1951 - AT&T became the first corporation to have over 1,000,000 stockholders.

1952 - Mr. Potato Head was the first toy advertised on television. The ad campaign was so successful, nearly a quarter of TV's advertising and programming would be aimed at children within a few years.

1953 - In his inaugural address, President Eisenhower said his administration's priorities included world policy aimed at promoting freedom.
