Post 10 of the most important events in the decade assigned.  Explain each briefly (descriptively and in context of other events, individuals and issues of that time).

1970s

-The Kent State shooting May 4; students were protesting escalation in the Vietnam War and the invasion of Cambodia. They protested in front of the JROTC building and started to throw rocks. The governor, James Rhodes, called the National Guard. The guard opened fire on the unarmed protesters, killed 4 students and wounded 9.

-Vietnam War- Bombing of Cambodia in 1968. Lon Nol of Cambodia is deposed by the Khmer rouge (Cambodian Communists) and President Nixon proposes to assist Lon Nol. The U.S. Army brings murder charges against Captain Ernest L. Medina because of the Massacre of Vietnamese civilians at Mai Lai. Nixon announces the invasion of Cambodia. The Paris Peace Accords ends the War in 1973.

-U.S Iranian Hostage Crisis-Nov 4, 1979-Jan 20, 1981. Islamic militant students held 63 US diplomats and 3 citizens in the American Embassy in Tehran. America attempted a rescue mission but failed. The hostages were released after America and Iran both signed the Algiers accords.

-Roe v. Wade-Supreme court Case that overturned the laws that outlawed or restricted abortion. Ruled that Abortion was protected under the Due Process Clause in the Fourteenth Amendment. One of the most controversial cases in history.

-Watergate Scandal-1972 Break in at the Democratic National committee in the Watergate hotel. Some members of the Nixon Administration, including CIA officials, pretended to be burglars and planted listening devices in the hotel rooms. They were discovered and Nixon retired before he could be impeached. He is the only President in U.S. History to retire.

-26 Amendment is passed lowering voting age to18.

-Munich Massacre-1972-* Arab terrorists (Black September) raided the Apartment building the housed Israeli athletes. Two were killed and 9 were taken hostage. They wanted the release of more than 200 Palestinians serving time in Israeli jails. When the Arabs tried to flee with the hostages, a gun battle broke out and all the hostages were killed along with some of the terrorists

-Daniel Ellsberg- in 1972 he leaked the Pentagon Papers which is a massive collection of top-secret government documents, whose publication helps to discredit the Vietnam War policies of the Nixon administration.

- Shirley Chisholm- First African-American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives; ran for the office of President of the United States in 1972

-Arab Oil Embargo-1973-causes severe shortage and energy prices skyrocket.

-Three mile island accident- 1979-nuclear power plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania. Led to no deaths or injuries to plant workers or members of the nearby community. Changed Emergency Response planning

April 1, 1970- President Richard Nixon signs the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act into law, banning cigarette television advertisements in the US

June 24, 1970- The US Senate repeals the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

Nov. 4, 1980- Ronald Reagan beats Jimmy Carter in the presidential election

1970- Environmental Protection Agency is created

1973- Vice president Spiro Agnew resigns and Gerald Ford is appointed as vice president

1973- "Saturday Night Massacre"- Nixon orders his own special prosecutor that had been appointed to investigate Watergate, he also fired his attorney general and deputy attorney general, who had refused to go along in firing the prosecutor.

happened b/c opec countries decided they would no longer ship oil to places that supported isreal in the yom kippur war. they also wanted to raise oil prices so they could make more money.

1970 - Apollo 13 was launched on April 11th.

1971 - The voting age was lowered to 18.

1972 - Grease became the top Broadway attraction.

1973 - Henry Kissinger was nominated and confirmed as Secretary of State.
