I think that when it comes to western influence on the economy, this question focuses on slavery and it’s expansion. How about you guys?

when looking at document b how did you guys interpert it?

my view was that it was the same group of indians on both sides just changing their attire in a social change. Mr E. saw it as the left side being Indians and the right side being Mexicans, and it shows how they were both not part of the westward expansion.

QUESTION: Identify the factors that led to westward migration after 1820. How did the rising importance of the West influence the social, economic and political trends of the rest of the country in the antebellum period?

The thesis should identify all of the following factors which led to US expansion: Job opportunities, new homes, more land, search for gold, religious reasons, manifest destiny, expansion of slavery and establishing legislations (the creation of states and their governments). The second part of the question is basically asking for a cause and affect essay. It would be important to mention how the west influenced social, economic, and political trends and how the rest of the country was affected.

Now all we must do... is create a thesis!! yay

I dont know if i did this part of the question right. If anyone has input... fill me in!!

I agree that slavery is one of the western influences on economy, but there were also some documents on the expansion of the railroads throughout the country, that could be in the thesis as well.

Westward migration was greatly influenced by:

1.) slavery: cheap land in the west, chance to expand slavery to more states...

2.)gold rush: people wanted to get rich so they took their chances of finding gold in the new lands...

3.)population: cities were getting larger so people left to escape the growing crowd...

This all I have so far...comments or any question will be appreciated

When I first looked at document B, I thought of it the same way. I thought that it was showing how Native American tribes adopted a more American way of life with their appearance. It reminded me of the picture in that documentary we watched on the West in class that was of the Cherokee tribe in a very American style of dress.

Westward migration began with the migration of English colonists along with colonists from New England, Virginia, and Maryland who wanted to pursue new land, tobacco cultivation, and religious moderation.

this is what i came up with for the first part of the question, hopefully we can branch of of this sentence with some more detail.

The rise of the west influenced social changes with a new attire, things also changed economically with an increase of railroads and political issues occurred with whether or not slavery should still be around. Some factors that led to westward migration were the Appalachian frontier, the debate of slavery, the Louisiana Territory, colonial migrations, religious reasoning, and new land.

Isuppose thats going to be my thesis, tell me how you feel about it.

i believe what you have stated is on the right track so when doing your thesis you should have all the correct points. i believe you did this park of the question right.

Some of the causes of westward migration were the increase of job opportunites, which would also increase the wealth of individuals and families, the want of gold from areas such as California, the belief of “manifest destiny,” and the want to spread democracy, religious freedom, and the need of new land for the use of farming.

This is my thesis statement:

The rising importance of the West influenced the the rest of the country in the antebellum period with it’s social trends, which were the mixing of cultures and religion, the economic trends, which were the want of gold and the increase of job opportunities for farmers (who needed more land) as well as factory workers in the North, and it’s contribution to the political trends, which consisted of the spreading of democracy.

Haha, after rereading the question, I realized I forgot the first half of my thesis, so my corrected thesis is:

Some causes of westward migration were the belief in "manifest destiny," religious freedom, the gold rush, and new job opportunities. The rising importance of the West influenced the rest of the country in the antebellum period with it’s social trends, which were the mixing of cultures and religion, the economic trends, which were the want of gold and the increase of job opportunities for farmers (who needed more land) as well as factory workers in the North, and it’s contribution to the political trends, which consisted of the spreading of democracy.

Yeah, I'm not too sure how good that is, oh well

My first interpretation of Document B was that it was showing the before/after view of the Indians that were involved with western migration. But I guess if you look at it closely, you can see the difference between them? I probably wouldn't have interpreted the people on the right as mexicans unless someone pointed it out to me. But now I can see that their clothing indicates that they were not part of westward migration, how they kept their culture's attire.

THESIS ASSIGNMENT:

Throughout the 19th Century, America continued to expand westward. Just like the colonial era, opportunity to gain cheap land and use the property to make a livelihood was particularly popular. However, there are several more factors which eventually led to further migration west, including: new jobs, the gold rush, new religious sects, the idea of manifest destiny, expansion of slavery, and establishment legislations. The West would influence America socially, economically, and politically through manifest destiny, the use of land for business and plantations participating in economy, and political leaders, like Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln, who were rising from the West.

(I actually posted it in the right forum this time. lol)

Tanyaaaaaa. You must be a thesis master . But i have something you might want to consider. One factor which influenced trends in society is the expansion of slavery. Because more land was being bought and used up by plantations in the west... slavery increased as well. As more plantations grew westward, the more slavery would be used. I dont know... i read it in American Pageant somewhere.

my thesis:

In America after 1820 much of the population decided to move west. This led to changes in the social, economic, and political aspects of American life, which were all greatly influenced by the interest in the west of many Americans. Some of the major issues that the west was responsible for was the forcing of Native Americans to adopt a more American way of life. Due to western influence, the expansion of slavery was heavily debated as well and railroads were also expanding throughout the country at a very rapid rate.

Kelsey, this is a good thesis, but you may want to be a bit more specific with some of your points. Such as your point about the "new attire," you should say who it was that took on this new attire.

Amanda, you did a good job with your thesis. However, in your second sentence, you may want to say "of the west to many Americans." That might make it a bit clearer. Also, in your first sentence you may want to state the factors for their decision to move west, like the gold rush, belief in manifest destiny, etc. Great job!

When creating this particular thesis, I suppose the first thing to do would be to list the reasons people started to migrate west after 1820. This would include, but is not limited to, the discovery of gold (California gold rush), manifest destiny, new job opportunities (which would bring more wealth to individuals and families), religious freedom, new land for farming, and the spreading of slavery. The next thing to do would be to list how the west influenced the rest of the country in it's social, economic, and political trends. Included for this part could be that the social trends were developing new attitudes toward different religions and different cultures were beginning to mix, economic trends were the search for gold and how some people became rich, also how the migration allowed for more farms and plantations, as well as slaves, and the political trends were the want of spreading democracy throughout the rest of the country.

I'm definitely confused on this part of the assignment , so if anyone has any comments on this and whether it is what that part of the assignment is asking for, please tell me. I'd appreciate it.

Manifest Destiny, the offers of cheap land, religious freedom, and hope to expand slavery were all-important factors that led to westward migration. The west had a strong impact on America’s economic, social and political trends during the antebellum period after 1820.It contributed to the economic part in that it’s rich land gave many people jobs, especially in agriculture and industry. Socially, it gave back a sense of nationalism to the people and began the idea of progressive thinking. Politically, it paved the way for such democratic practices as popular sovereignty.

Supporting the American Pageant tezt book at the end of the Mexican War america prospered greatly from the massive gain of land.
