.How is racism culturally defined, understood and measured by different groups in America?

For example, when your from a country where pretty much everyone is the same race or ethnicity, and they see people who are another culture they feel like they are different and they descriminate against that race or that person.

Racism is when one person descriminates against another, and makes them feel inferior to them. Such as, the blacks and the whites, the whites made the blacks feel inferior to them. They made it seem like the blacks where nothing that they were different and they critised them just because the color of their skin.

What are the symptoms and effects of institutional racism in America?  How do they affect different cultural groups?

Racism has been with us for centuries,Black workers, for example, continue to experience an unemployment rate twice that of white workers. For example referring to all members of a certain ethnic group in negative and insulting ways such as, they call "Portuguese people greenhorns"or confusing race with culture, a belief that certain races are better in particular jobs or functions, a belief in differences in intelligence between the races, etc.

People asume how people are just by there race, such as they say a certain race might be dumber than another. This can do serious damage to a person. more mentally than anything else. But sometimes racism can turn violent.
They might be like for example all "puerto ricans are stupid" that jumping into (wrong) conclusions.  When someone is critised this hurts them, they feel hated or disliked and it is not fun to feel this way. People get teased and discriminated against.

What are the origins (causes) of racism in American history and how do they affect individuals and groups today?

racism goes way back to when blacks where enslaved. Racism is caused by one person feeling inferior to the other.and they see that person as differnent because the color of their skin. Most whites were racist against blacks. they made the blacks into slaves just because they though they werent worth anything. Today this doesnt really happen. Blacks and whites are equal, with the acception of some. But racism does go on today but it has many different forms, say someone is puertorican or portuguese someone else might critize them for being just that.

8. In what forms does racism manifest itself in American society? What are the most common effects of racism on society?
Racism is still quite present in American society, as sad as that is. One example is in American history, a majority of it focuses on the accomplishments of white men, while there are special months designated to study the accomplishments of African Americans and women. That is what the history books focus on for the most part and that is what is taught to many people. In American culture there is still racism. People put so much focus on what is white music and what is black music, white movies and black movies. There is nothing wrong with being proud of the music and past times of your own culture, but theres no reason why these things cant mix. Racism is present in the way people look at a rapper like Eminem, they make such a big deal over him because he is a white rapper, the only thing that gets more attention than the fact that hes white are the thigns that he says. Hes just a rapper, hes not even the first rapper that was white.
The effects racism has on society is it causes mistrust, people who feel discriminated against will not trust or respect those that they feel are discriminating against them, which will lead to many more problems in society.

10. How will the increase in cultural diversity in Americas demographics over the next 50 years affect racism in America?
With the increase in cultural diversity in Americas demographics over the next 50 years, racism in America should decrease. People will be much more open to other cultures and it will be become the norm to grow up surrounded by several cultures at once. Being aware of all different cultures will be a part of so many peoples lives that they wont be fearful of them, which would reduce racism, which, in my opinion, is really based on fear.

7. What is internalized racism, how is it caused and identified, and what are effective strategies to block and reduce it?
Internalized racism is prejudice toward ones own culture. It is caused by the discrimination of society, if a child grows up learning that their culture is inferior to someone elses then they will most likely believe it and it will become something that stays with them. People who have no interest in their culture whatsoever, people who believe that someone elses culture is superior to their own could be catorgorized as victims of internalized racism. Ways to reduce it would be to reduce racism in society, to raise your children with respect and awareness of their own cultures, as well as others. To teach your children that the racism that they may see in society is wrong is another way to block it.

  1. I think demographic change will only strengthen our understanding and appreciation of various cultural groups. The more we are exposed to different diverse people, the better equipped we are to thrive in a globalizing world.
  2. Racism is culturally defined as particular treatment, often negative, based on a persons race. I think racism is understood as still very much alive, but, a fad that is dying and slowly becoming extinct among American society. I think some groups in America see racism as a more relevant injustice than other groups. I guess some feel the other group uses the concept of racism as a scapegoat or excuse for their lack of success or whatever may be going on.
